Nice game! I like the mood and the idea you need to go further and further away from basecamp to fetch logs. I am not sure what the meet (food?) is about. It took me a while to realize what the character was saying when hitting the tent, because the text was over his face.

zonvoi 2020-04-20 01:18

the game's fun, i like the mechanic, it's a little bit repetitive but it still is really good!

diamond-wolf 2020-04-20 01:19

This game has a great atmosphere. My only real complaint is that (for the time I played) there wasn't much to do besides collect wood. This would have benefited from something to change the pace - maybe a bear or something to run from?

ubershmekel 2020-04-20 01:27

I enjoyed collecting different kinds of wood. The music was eery, the art was effective, but I got bored. At one point - the fire didn't go out yet, but I think I lost. It said that I survived but my friend did not. So I don't know if that was because the fire went out or a bear got to him or not. But the game wasn't communicating with me to keep me engaged for long. So I don't want to try again because I feel like I'm blindingly and aimlessly collecting wood. A progress bar for the night might help.

mayhemgaming 2020-04-20 01:29

This game is really cool! I like the calm music and simple art style. Only complaint I have is that the player turning seems to be a little delayed compared to the movement.

curiouslycory 2020-04-20 01:54

I survived! ... but my friend did not. Might have to replay and see if I can get an alternate ending ;)

viniflores 2020-04-20 02:07

HAHAHAHA we used a very similar concept (KEEP THE FIRE ALIVE) :P, i liked your art best though

symnel 2020-04-20 03:41

Thank you all very much for the feedback. It was my first jam and I had a lot of fun doing it. I shall learn more about animations for my next one.

I also did not think about repetitiveness and the game getting boring so I really appreciate knowing what to work on in future games. Thank you Zonvoi and ubershmekel

I am also very happy to see my art and music made the job.

Also, sorry for the fullscreen text issue, thanks for letting me know.

Really quite a fun little game. I want to say a big thank you for putting a nice clear outline around objects that you can pick up (including the rubik's cube) it is really helpful for letting people see things that are intractable and not enough games do it. I really enjoyed the nice soft beat you have going in the background and the pickup sound effect has a pretty good crunch to it. This I can see here in the comments you saying this is your first jam and all I can say is you did a really good job and made a really solid game. Also thank you for putting in a compass for those of us who are directionally impaired.

joskerdu 2020-04-20 19:35

I like it. Favorite feature is the little compass so you don't get lost. Nice touch. Also dig the simple start up / menu screen. So... I found the Rubiks cube... do I get a prize? :P

symnel 2020-04-20 20:15

@joskerdu I'm sorry, you do not get a prize for finding the cube, but I'm glad you did find my little easter egg. Was a little challenge with another LD participant to include one ;) If people play enough to find my 3 endings and my easter egg, I'm happy.

brice-mahier 2020-04-21 01:51

Played it multiple times just to be able to save my friend! Awesome ambiance, really grounded by that dramatic and stressful ambiant sound.

Loved it! Nice work!

For a first jam, you delivered a complete game, can't wait to play your next one :P

shaolin-dave 2020-04-21 04:09

There was some text on the tent as I came up but couldn't read, something about sleep? Anyway, graphics were good, I liked the moody tone given by the background music, I wish I'd had more time with sound design on my own game. My fire never seemed to go down at all, I wasn't sure if I was being wasteful of wood by grabbing so much at once, or if I was just REALLY boosting that fire stat.

I like the compass you put in the corner of the screen, a lot of these games (some of mine included) and just big featureless voids with nothing to navigate with, I liked both the design and the functionality of the compass, I'll have to remember that for future projects.

100th-coin 2020-04-21 16:50

Oh nice! you have no idea how many games like this I have played that didn't include a compass! Friggin' genius idea.

fizzget 2020-04-21 17:15

nice audio on this game, although the pickup sounds are a little jarring. the compass for the fire really helps and i just wanted to keep collecting wood even though the fire was dying. nice job.

barrier 2020-04-21 17:31

The music feels a bit creepy, was expecting some monsters to come out of the dark and chase me, could be a nice addition :)

Found the rubiks cube, collected a bunch of wood, this fire sure is hungry!

Survived the night but friend did not, so I guess there is something else you have to do to win? Or just something you have to find?

Anyways, good job on the game! :)

symnel 2020-04-21 17:40

@barrier Yep something you need to find to save the friend that is as a little "extra" thing to keep alive, but with the feedback I now know I should've included a little quest log or something to help figure it out. (Also the full screen text issue doesn't help figuring out there's someone in the tent) Thank you for the feedback! And there was monsters planned at first, but didn't have time to add and balance the game.

obscenelytrue 2020-04-21 20:28

The atmosphere is just very immersive thanks to your nice gaphics. Thank you for the compass which is really useful.

beavergames 2020-04-21 21:45

The art is not that good, but I'm not gonna punish you for that, because most of us are programmers, and programmers don't draw. What it lacks in art, it makes up with lighting. The game is fun and it's good. Also i think you should move up the torch and create like a torch holding sprite.

mykola 2020-04-22 19:18

The game is good. I like that it has all the components, gameplay is there, art is nice and music and audio are fitting as well. You could improve the game rules a bit though by adding a win condition / instructions. Otherwise, it gets monotonic rather quickly. It's pretty good for the first game jam though, I think you've done a great job. Keep it up!

symnel 2020-04-22 20:21

@mykola Thank you very much, I think you're right. I shall come back and look at all these comments for the next jam.

kent-reese 2020-04-23 00:13

I enjoyed the game, everything worked the way it was supposed to and I survived the night. I wish there was a bit more to do, but I'm not sure what I'd add.

axefall 2020-04-23 02:16

I thought this game was good, overall I wasn't sure about how long the night is, and if I was over feeding my fire. I would have appreciated a little more feedback about how I was doing. And at the end I was like, what friend died? haha, keep it up!

lectvs 2020-04-23 02:35

Nice, simple game! The controls felt smooth, but sometimes the character didn't face the right direction, haha. Cool little game!

hoyr 2020-04-23 02:44

This feels like a good start. However it needs something extra to give it some tension/challenge. A bit more feedback about time would be good to. Both in terms of completing the game and in terms of the fire's time to burn out.

jarithius 2020-04-23 03:00

I think you have a good Jam game here. Its simple, but fun. You had nice lighting effects, and particle FX for the fire, good touch. However I feel there are several things (besides more time) that could have helped your game. For instance, fixing the move animations when he walks 1 way or the other, quick turns left the torch hanging out of his Butt, lol. and walking down and left or right should probably have the player facing the left or right sides as they walk. Also some extra things to do or heads up that the longer the night goes the faster the fire burns out. Or maybe it just seemed that way to me, but if true a bit of warning or balancing would help fix that. Over all, Well done, Nice Job.

kjscott 2020-04-23 10:02

The music and background effects created a nice audio atmosphere. There were issues with the movement animation but I really loved the compass which helped show the direction and simultaneously how much fuel you had left. That was a very good addition and made it really easy to see what was going on.

It would have been nice if there was say movement blockers such as trees, which could form part of a renewable resource of occasional dropped branches. Also, a note in the splash screen saying press ESC to restart after game over.
