Looks cool but it isn't working in my browser at the moment
Creepy, atmosphere!
I ended up not defending the CPU and instead trying to find the battery things around the world.
The sound for when your ship hits a wall doesn't seem to communicate that doing so makes you take damage :(
I think the sounds and art are very nice, it was a good atmosphere and mood. I liked how there were 4 health pickups in all 4 edges of the map, collecting those was a nice challenge. I had trouble getting all 4 in the same playthrough though because it took a long time for me to go grab them and leave the computer undefended. And a cool part about the shield is that it lets me shove enemies around even though I can't shoot them. I didn't realize at first that I should shoot diagonally (because the ship doesn't turn to face those diagonal directions) and I think you move a bit faster while flying diagonally too.
@ssstormy thanks for the comment. I added more to the description above about walls causing damage as well. Totally forgot to mention it. Your strategy of going for the batteries is the right thought too.
@mbc There is a surprise at the end too if you stick it out. I'm worried I made it too hard. Thanks for playing!
I can't get more than 2. With a little finessing could be more fun, I found it really hard to avoid being hit by the enemy shot, and with their ability to fly through walls, it left the player with quite the disadvantage. I'd maybe ( if you carry on devloping ) work in a standard 8 direction style movement, but have the ship animations smooth / lerp to it so you get the best of both worlds.
Really liked the mood a lot. The sounds are especially nice. The game loop of navigating to a battery to learn the layout and then having to escape the swarm to get back was nice. It didn't really make sense to me when the computer changed sides at the end, some kind of notification would be good. I did figure out I should kill it though. I'm surprised to read that others were having trouble finishing - I actually thought it was kind of easy. I think a bit of momentum in the ship movement would be really nice, like drifting after letting go for a bit.
@tattomoosa & @johnnysix Thanks for the feedback. Both great advice. There is definitely some kinks to work out to get it more balanced. I would definitely like to continue development or at least make an improved iteration. XD
Looks cool but it isn’t working in my browser at the moment too ! :\
Solid effort, I'd love to have auto shooting and maybe choose the shooting direction with mouse?
I enjoyed this game! I liked the creepy music and slightly ominous mood. My favorite music so far! The game definitely strikes a strong mood even with the simple graphics.
I'm also a big fan of the enemies that float all over the place firing projectiles. Navigating an environment that's increasingly difficult due to spawning enemies makes for a urge to rush that's not time pressure, and I found that pretty interesting. It's a cool way to pressure the player to hurry up, but if they're really skilled they can still survive even as lots of enemies spawn in.
Also the twist of the computer turning against you is definitely cool, and seems to fit into the mood of the game. It's an interesting small story. Unfortunately I was confused at first because I didn't realize my shots were damaging it. I just flew around for a bit and then died just as I realized.
But overall I liked it a lot!
@ishmandoo & @scottthoo were you using chrome to play? I built and tested in firefox which works and just barely tested in chrome which isn't working for me either.
UPDATE: I ran it in chrome's incognito mode and it was working fine. Not sure if this was the issue for you all but it's worth a try if you decide to revisit. Thanks for taking a look.
@dandala88 it works for me now! Cool game, love the spooky sound effects!
I spent all that time collecting power to keep the computer alive... then I shoot it to win? Some explanation after collecting the power as to what to do and why would be good.
I liked the music change when I got all the power. Very ominous.
Graphics remind me of my early days on the Commodore 64.
I found it strange that there was such a difference in the quality of graphics between the walls and the ships/cube in the center of the screen. Would have worked better to keep both to the same level of graphics.
The maze structure and enemies were a little too simple and just relied on poor hand eye co-ordination to cause eventual loss of health.
The first stage audio was a little repetitive but having it change after you awakened(?) the boss was an interesting highlight. Definitely one of the best parts of the game, quite enjoyed it.
Really fun! I like how it acts both as a slow bullet hell and as an exploration game. At first I was a bit confused because I am dumb and thought I was protecting the computer, but once it clicked it was a lot of fun. Nice work!
Perfect moody atmosphere from the music and slowly floating enemies, felt a bit like a Metroid game. The mazes were an interesting challenge and the boss fight at the end a nice treat. I really liked the art for the main computer with all those wires snaking around. Solid work
@ian-kettlewell Thank you for your feedback. Sorry about the lack of indication on the end there. Hope it didn't ruin your experience too much. @kjscott I totally agree with you on the graphics comment. I wanted to develop the surroundings more but you know...ludum dare. I know that's an excuse but my main focus was on getting the map built out at that point. @ishmandoo Glad you were able to get it working. Thanks! @xeke-deaath @blipbloop I know the guidance of the game was a bit cryptic I was trying to capture a bit of the old style of games where they give you no direction. @alex-mulkerrin thanks for the comment. Im glad you caught the Metroid influence. I love those types of games so they're kind of my go to when developing.
Nice sound effects, good controls. Not much to expect, just keep on making games!
Hey nice game, and congrats on your first Ludum Dare!
I really liked the atmosphere! The sound and the cube computer somehow reminded me of the Borg cube or V'ger in Star Trek :D Nice work!
Great atmosphere and an interesting concept. Computer death animation was nice too. I did feel like there were too many enemies on screen at once to manage. Also some more visceral feedback from killing enemies (such as particle effects, screen shake, etc.) would certainly improve things.
I think the sprites are nicely detailed for an arcade style game. I would have loved to see particles when hitting the bad guys, but overall it gets the job done and runs smooth! Thanks for making this :)
This entry was a fairly simple and straightforward one. I wish the game had been explained inside of the game, though I understand sometimes with LD that's how things go. I thought the music was pretty good, and sound design overall was a positive. The game logic like colliders, controls and AI were very basic, and made the game feel relatively prototypical. Some more depth / nuance would have gone a long way to having the game experience be more consistent and engaging in the long term. Thanks for the submission!
Didn't work in Chrome Incognito mode, Microsoft Edge to the rescue! (never thought I'd say that) I liked how you could only aim in the 4 cardinal directions. It made it much easier to control than the usual Asteroids style controls. The game works in that the computer's health pretty much becomes a timer for completing the power supply sections. But it felt weird to just leave the computer for long periods of time just letting it get hammered by enemies. It would be nice if there was something you could do to protect the computer while you're away from it.
A nice idea! I like the simplicity of the artstyle, perhaps changing the main computer to the same simple graphics would work better. Overall the game works fine, but I had a few issues with the gameplay: - Very often enemies spawned very near me, causing me to hit them fractions of a second after they spawn. I guess forbidding the spawn within some distance from the player would work well. - The level design isn't really interesting. Most of it is just long, straight corridors, forcing you to fly forward for a long time and think of something else to not get bored. In the lower section you made a slightly more interesting maze, but the fun of it goes away quickly because of the tight passages. You need to carefully maneuver through them, and since the controls aren't really precise, it makes for a frustrating experience.
Other than that, I liked the game. It's a pretty decent LD compo entry. The boss fight felt really good. All in all, I had fun playing it. ;)
Thanks for submitting your game for me to play on my livestream!
