Enjoyed your game. Very unique and interesting mechanic. Combined platforming with puzzle solving. Graphics and sound were well done. Didn't catch how it tied into the "start with nothing" theme though?

christophebessette 2019-10-07 17:11

Hey Buddy, fun game, the art is great too. But the keys all spread out like that is pretty hard to remember, and a bit annoying to reach for. Great job overall!

akusan 2019-10-07 17:15

Pretty cool game you have. The animations were cool. The puzzle and concept is fun. Although the 1st part, it wasn't really obvious that you need to jump down on a certain area

trito 2019-10-07 17:16

Super fun game! I found myself not want to quit this game. I just wanted to keep on trying! Really nice work!

jwiggs 2019-10-07 17:24

I had some bugs when playing like randomly dying or switching to a different color, but the game was still very enjoyable, especially trying to figure out your final area!

grhyll 2019-10-07 17:45

This is so cute ^_^ (Well at least, until I accidentally respawned x) ) I didn't go very far though, I didn't understand how the apple work. At first I thought the color of the apple was the color I would become, but the blue apple sometimes turns me blue, sometimes yellow. After that I thought that maybe it was related to the color of the block I'm standing on, but it doesn't look like it either :/

antti-haavikko 2019-10-07 18:22

@christophebessette They aren’t reallly spread. It’s arrows or wasd with space for jump and z/j for eating.

@akusan For sure, should have made that first drop indicated somehow since dropping from any other position kills you. Truly noted, this is why games need non dev testers.

@grhyll It is always the color of the apple. Or at least it should be. And the topmost apple of the stack to be more exact. Unless there is some weird bug. And btw, it’s purple, not blue 😜

Thanks to everyone who has played and given feedback so far!

grhyll 2019-10-07 18:52

@antti-haavikko ...purple? :o I was talking about the first apple, it isn't blue? Or... green-ish? Like, purple is the color of the block in your gif, right? Anyway, the first apple turned me sometimes yellow, sometimes blue :/

antti-haavikko 2019-10-07 19:02

@grhyll Oh right yeah, that one. Yeah, that is basically blue though I’d call it cyan. It’s CMYK really... 😅

Must be a bug then. Or you’re doing something weird I didn’t consider at all.

danielcmcg 2019-10-08 16:15

Very good puzzle game, got me trying many times to pass the blocks and with the right sequence of apples. The mood was set well with the nice art and sounds.

lesinvisible 2019-10-09 17:44

Kinda addicting puzzle-platformer, not sure what it has to do with the theme, but I like it. Especially, I loved handmade music and voices. Irritating thing for me was that you can't change the order of apples in your stash but I understand that it is a part of the mechanic.

nervous-composers 2019-10-09 17:52

I beat the game. Very polished! The animation, art, and controls were amazing. I loved the expressiveness in the way it moved and it's eyes, especially when it fell at the end. The quips from the blocks were a nice touch. I also liked the explicit camera control to reveal more information about the surroundings, and during the ending sequence.

I do have some nitpicks. The puzzle which stumped me the most was the very first one in the opening, and I spent way too long trying to figure out where to go. After the first one, I didn't have trouble with the rest. Also, there was some bugs, such as randomly dying when walking into blocks. Also, if I'm in the middle of eating a blue apple, and I pickup a purple apple as I'm still eating the blue apple, then I turn purple and I've picked up a purple apple (I should turn blue).

Otherwise, great game!

antti-haavikko 2019-10-10 13:36

@nervous-composers As it has already been stated, the first puzzle is too much. Somehow it didn't occur to me that the first "level" is almost all yellow and only has one spot where you need to drop through it and everywhere else kills you. This would be fixed by adding an arrow pointing down to the rightmost room on the level. Or to stick with the current scheme, add a block that tells/hints about it.

And speaking of blocks, those quips were pretty much just added as a way to show controls and introduce mechanics. I then just *had to* spread them all over the world because those (and apples) were added as the target for character to look at and them being too far made the pupils pop out from the eyes.

Yup, bugs are bound to happen in jam games. Glad that nothing majorly game breaking has surfaced yet at least. Even though random deaths sure can be annoying but hopefully those aren't that frequent. I guess the collider for checking block intersecting is bit too big or incorrectly positioned. And the mid animation apple picking is something I didn't take into account at all. I guess the apple is popped from the stack at the end of the animation even though it should be right at the start of it.

Big thanks for the feedback!

jiri-hysek 2019-10-10 17:20

I love when someone makes smart and challenging puzzle with such simple mechanics :) I also had to watch video to overcome the first puzzle but I don't feel it's unfair or something, I just hadn't enough patience.

Overall great entry again, I like introduction of mechanics (also those bubbles look so sleek ;) and I don't have to mention pretty graphics, animations and audio.. it's kind of standard in your games :)

p-r 2019-10-10 18:14

The animations are awesome. Very funny. Not sure it quite fits the theme though.

fractal 2019-10-10 22:54

Amazing game and very polished! Congrats!

raphiell 2019-10-10 22:54

I enjoyed the puzzles but found that you can randomly die when jumping up into solid blocks.

A good entry for sure, well done!

tort60091 2019-10-11 18:00

I really like the animation of the character. I think the mechanic should be more player mistakes tolerant. For example when you eat the one color apple another color goes back in this case you can freely switch colors The one more idea is maybe he can eat the blocks?)) After this he can have bigger size, well it's another idea, but anyway just the idea

And this smiling blocks so cute )))

antti-haavikko 2019-10-12 11:14

@tort60091 Thanks for the feedback! My whole idea behind the mechanic was to not be able to switch apple order so you couldn't just pick up apples all willy nilly and should do some scouting and plan ahead. Of course the mechanic could be extended upon, currently it pretty much runs its course and that is the reason why it's as short as it is. Well maybe few more puzzles could be squeezed in with the current mechanic if given enough thought. But I'm not entirely too happy about the puzzle design as they are currently, they were pretty much a rush job. Pretty much the whole level design was incorporated in the last third of the second day amongst several other fixes, tweaks and additions. I think I wasted too much time on the character and animations but at least I think they turned out pretty nice.

frederikh 2019-10-14 07:44

Really enjoyed the playthrough :) It really shows that you spend a lot of time on character and animation and it gives the game a lot of personality. I liked the puzzle mechanic with figuring out in which order you need to get the apples.

One thing which did annoy me a little is that you can rarely see the whole puzzle at first which means you can't solve a puzzle without dying at least once or twice (or was there a zoom-out-button I missed?).

Great and very polished entry! :)

antti-haavikko 2019-10-14 13:42

@frederikh Thanks for the feedback! I sure did put quite a lot of time to character and animations this time, maybe even too much time. Didn't really get to polish every other aspect as far as I would have wanted. The puzzles were kinda rushed and backgrounds, particle effects and other level decorations didn't quite get enough love. Well, at least there aren't any huge game breaking bugs.

I did try to zoom out enough that the puzzles could be scouted out without needing to do a trial run (with the exception of the last puzzle). The dropping puzzle (the one where you need to drop through a sequence of colors) zooms out enough to show all the blocks except for last two and the rightmost block on the platform where the apples are gives the color of the last one. So the whole sequence can be figured out without deaths. Same should be true for all earlier puzzles too, you just might need to do some scouting and not pick up all the apples as soon as you see them.

i had alot fun :) cool game :hearts:

cdunham 2019-10-15 19:32

Kept having a bug where I would eat an apple of 1 color but I would change into a different one. It happens when I pick up an apple and eat it immediately, it probably doesn't update which apple the player has soon enough. Also sometimes when I would jump up and hit the bottom of a block it would just kill me. Other than those happening a couple times the game was good! The neutral color of the character looks too much like the yellow to me though, it probably would've been better to have the default color be something entirely different than the colors you can turn into, like red or green maybe. The puzzles were good, though some of them require the player to die like 4 times so they can see what colors they have to turn into and in which order. I think letting them cycle through which apple they have on top would improve the game a bit, but the puzzles are kinda based around the player picking them up in a certain order. Overall I enjoyed the game though!

antti-haavikko 2019-10-16 13:36

@cdunham Thanks for the feedback! Yeah the apple mismatch bug is a bummer. I wonder why I didn't encounter it myself at all. Maybe I'm not impatient enough to try to eat them mid animation. And the death bug isn't great either but it kinda works in lore aspect, you wouldn't want to jump straight into the ceiling head first either, now would you. It was just a misplaced and/or incorrectly sized collider that caused this and I didn't run into it either during the weekend. It's a constant issue with (solo dev especially) game jam games that you yourself don't know how the players will play the game. Devs know the solutions and how to play so they are probably the only people playing their game "correctly".

philomory 2019-10-16 22:35

This is a sweet little puzzle game; not too hard, not too easy, which, is a hard balance to pull off in this time frame. Graphics and especially music really added to the atmosphere.

The one thing that I found a little awkward (besides the handful of minor bugs noted by others) is the timing aspect of eating and jumping; because you don't switch colors immediately on pressing the button, there's an element of pressing the eat button, and then timing your jump so that you leave the ground before you switch but you switch mid-air before you land. An alternative implementation which had you change colors more-or-less immediately would instead have you timing when to eat instead of when to jump. I'm not sure the alternative is _better_, I'd have to play around with each and see how they felt (maybe you already did, for all I know). Anyway, that's my only "complaint".

One other thing that I guess could be slightly tweaked, would be to maybe give a visual indicator of which blocks have something to say before you reach them. That way the player doesn't have to go touch every block to check whether they have any dialog (since the dialog is pretty funny and worth seeing). But that's a pretty minor quibble too.

Very well polished game, with a pretty original and interesting concept. The art is very nice. I enjoyed playing this game :p

dimesto52 2019-10-23 23:58

the concept is interesting but still I have the impression of cheating before I realize that it is the solution
