I wasn't able to pick up anything. I think it might be due to trees and other sprites being infront of me on the Z-axis? Or just not being close enough on the Z-axis? Great soundtrack though, and appreciated the climbing mechanic.

The objects stuck in the snow is a "feature", you gotta get the shovel to get them out. stick, rock, rock on the work bench. Just for my own sanity, were you using a gamepad or keyboard?
GAH JUST SAW I DIDN'T UPDATE THE PC CONTROLS. PICKUP IS Q. Also updated the instructions

Hey, cool one but i found the music bit disturbing and there is some Z-axis alignment issues with trees. Other than that fine entry!

Yeah all the music was generated procedural from Abuntantly Music. Some of it is better than others. I put 5 tracks in and they're randomly played. Thanks for the feedback.

Ok so I just tried your game and first of all let me tell you that I find the artstyle pretty great, good job ^^
But I must admit that I encountered the same problems as the others : The trees are hiding some elements, and even if I did succeed to put some items on the table (I even restarted the game twice to fully understand it, I had too because snow was blocking my path after some time, nice idea by the way !) I never succeeded to craft anything :(
I would love to see some progress on this game in the future ^^
Good job once again !

Thanks for the feedback, I did encounter the tree z axis thing, but it wasn't game breaking and I kind of liked how you would walk infront of some and behind others. All trees can be taken down to stumps, stumps can be removed with a pickaxe.
For any future readers here is the crafting recipes:
Stick, stick, stone = axe Stick, stone, stone = shovel Stick, stone, stick = pickaxe
Again appreciate you giving feedback and trying it out 😄
Pretty fun game! Had a hard time figuring out how to craft things, and couldn't figure out how to build an axe. Overall though, liked the graphics and the music, and overall the idea was fun!
Struggled a little bit with rushing about and only being able to carry 1 thing at a time. Crafting was a little awkward but as a whole I really liked the atmosphere and the constant worry of keeping the fire lit. The audio fit really well too. Good work!

@bocodillo I'm pushing an update to address the difficulty level. If I had more time I would of played it more and worked on balancing. I think my game suffers from developer knowledge, the fire is burning too quickly for players not experienced with it. Almost roguelikeish. Where as I've built it and played it and know the optimal path.
So my update will reduce the fire burnout rate and increase the tool charge count. I appreciate the feedback, carrying one item was a design decision as I didn't want to get bogged down with building an inventory system and I think it presents difficult decisions to the player.
Cheers
@diaonic Hey, you couldn't pay me enough to build an inventory system in 2 days, legit choice, and developer knowledge is the biggest curse of game dev.
I downloaded FanTheFlames_win32.zip and had some problems after running the game. When running FanTheFlames.exe, I get the following in a new console window:
Mono path[0] = 'G:/Indie Games/LD45/FanTheFlames_win32/FanTheFlames_Data/Managed' Mono config path = 'G:/Indie Games/LD45/FanTheFlames_win32/MonoBleedingEdge/etc' Initialize engine version: 2019.2.5f1 (9dace1eed4cc) [XR] Discovering subsystems at path G:/Indie Games/LD45/FanTheFlames_win32/FanTheFlames_Data/UnitySubsystems Forcing GfxDevice: Null GfxDevice: creating device client; threaded=0 NullGfxDevice: Version: NULL 1.0 [1.0] Renderer: Null Device Vendor: Unity Technologies Begin MonoManager ReloadAssembly - Completed reload, in 0.091 seconds UnloadTime: 0.620300 ms
Let me know if you fix the issue (hard enough making a game in 48 hours, right?) and I'll circle back to this one.

@josh-galecki Just uploaded a new version, I pushed up an update about an hour ago adjusting the difficulty and somehow selected server in my build settings. Should be fine now, use the same itch.io link. Cheers and thanks for reporting it.

The mood is great, it was the first thing that caught my attention, the music helped with that quite a bit. The snow filling in mechanic I though was also a nice touch. Building a full crafting system with a game on top of it in two days is awesome, heres to you for being ambitious with that.
I had a hard time figuring out what my goal was. I know I was supposed to keep the fire going, but I didn't really feel any consequence from not doing it. The crafting system feeds into that, but if I don't know why I'm doing it, then the rest of the game doesn't hang right.

@tmullet Thanks for the kind words. If I had more time I would of dove into more of a story driven feel, with more crafting. My initial thought was, how can I capture that feeling of mario bros when you're nearly out of time, that tense moment when the audio changes and you know you need to "go". I wanted to use a winter theme, and I wanted to not code an inventory system. Push difficult choices at the player whenever possible.
the idea is solid, a couple of drawbacks, but i can see some potential.
Love the consept of carrying one item at a time, by actually picking them up haha. the snow idea was an interesting challenge, but the way "climbing" was executed by double jumping could be tedious if you didn't come in at the right angle.
got the axe and realised that i could spam down the entire first forrest, cost me an axe in a second, but i had enough wood for some time. maybe add some cooldown timer for how often/fast you can "harvest"

Beautiful game! Lots of fun mechanics!

Yeah I noticed the tool spamming being an issue as well, its not so bad when using a game pad which is what I did most of my testing on. Its definitely a problem with the keyboard. Appreciate you trying it out and giving me some feedback. @kekkodude
Very difficult game! I ended up focusing on just feeding the fire to get my best score.
I found the keyboard controls pretty tricky, so thanks for offering the controller option!
Crafting is hard :/

Yeah if I learned anything this jam, I think I needed simpler control scheme. Thanks for the feedback
Impressive! Really liked the asthetics and audio, well except for the jumping sound XD Not quite sure what the goal of the game is though, other than living for as long as possible?

Nice graphics. Gameplay was confusing at first, I made the mistake of just trying to start playing. You put a lot of work in this game and it shows.

A pretty neat survival game with clunky controls and too loud sounds. Next time pay attention to them!

Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to keep iterating on it and seeing what I end up with.
Interesting game, it was a bit confusing starting off though. Controls felt a little weird.

Quite cozy and fun. Explanation was severely lacking. Noting controls, mechanics and crafting recipes **exclusively** on this page meant that I constantly had to tab in and out. That destroyed the feel of the game.
There were some thin black bars in the sprites, possibly due to a non-pixel-perfect camera. There was also very poor feedback on weapon durability - I didn't know it existed until my shovel broke.

@corrade @brallex Thanks for the feedback, was my first Compo entry. I wanted a proper tutorial and inventory system, but time didn't allow for it.
Made it to day eight! After that I walked around the entire map and there was no wood lying around anymore and I had to burn my last chunk instead of making a new axe (I had no choice, the fire was almost out and I really wanted to see the next day). Found all three recipes too, finding them out was fun. Had a good time playing it, took me three tries to get a good flow going and I got really into it. Very immersive snowy world you crafted, great job!

@captaindreamcast Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm surprised trees weren't' re-spawning. Then again its a jam game :)

Great mood and graphics, but it is difficult to play. I really like the idea of the fire to keep alive. Good job!

The music was a bit strange, and the game lost a bit of it's meaning since I couldn't die. Also, what is the pick axe for? because I didn't manage do break anything with it. Other than that, I really enjoyed the wall jumping and exploring the map. Has a lot of potential, don't stop working on it. Good job.

I like the graphics and the music, but I had some major issues. The first several times I played, the snow piled so high so quickly that I would be trapped and couldn't do anything. Like within the first few seconds of the game I had giant snow piles on either side of me. The crafting is also fairly awkward.
diaonic
2019-10-11 10:28
@nisovin were you aware of being able to double jump? I know the controls and crafting now clunky, being a compo entry I had no time for a proper inventory or tutorial. Thanks for trying it.
Interesting idea, but there was quite a few issues. The double jump was kind of weird. I seemed to keep using up the tool durability without realizing what I was doing. The snow was encroaching on the crafting area before I even made a shovel, so it was a pain to get materials. Even a simple text write up in the beginning would at least help reduce player confusion.
I do kind of like the graphic style. The audio on the other hand was confusing. It sounds like 2 tracks going at once. This game is something that could be really neat, but may have been a bit too ambitious for a compo.

Pretty impressive job for compo limits. Great sounds & art, but there are few bugs. Jump sounds plays when you press Spacebar, but not when you jump. So if you spam spacebar in air you will hear jump sound without jump. Also crafting and walljump mechanics need some explanation in game.
Some in game explanations would be nice but after reading the description I got the hang of it, although I'm not sure what the pickaxe does, if anything. Some actions lack a bit of feedback. Jumping, crafting and using items have audio feedback but picking up, placing down and feeding the fire doesn't. Some clearer visual feedback overall would make things feel more polished as well, especially for the crafting. Being able to see when you can craft and what it becomes beforehand would be nice, even just something simple like a text popup. Pixelart looks alright although the background feels a bit empty when it's not snowing. Because the music is generated it does get a bit weird and shrill at times.. but I kinda like weird sometimes and I think I prefer it over nothing.
Interesting little game! The overall mood of everything was pretty good; the music went with the art style and the gameplay, etc. I was possibly hearing some overlapping music tracks, the graphics tended to have seams between the blocks and the really nice snow particles tended to seem as if they were occasionally flickering in and out but that may have just been the days passing by or a weather system. Nicely done though!
Thanks for submitting your game for me to play on my livestream!
