I appreciate the subtle criticism of the theme! I found Angry Words to be quite a fitting name for the game and the game itself was an interesting one. I got to level 5 and I'll perhaps pick it up again later.

Nice game! It's funny how it worked around the theme. :) I didn't really like the theme, either. The game concept was fun to play, and audio was cool. :)

After 2 levels I was like.. ahhhh I get it, start with nothing! Level 5 or so I made a mess and couldn't fix it, wish there was a reset level button. Other than that quite a solid submission

HORSE.

Great game. Wonderful execution, the audio is brilliant. Magnificent. A few of the levels actually got me in a bind for quite a while. A level reset would've indeed have been great.

Also, level 10 might be broken. It's impossible to solve.

Haha, this was my first Ludum Dare and the main thing I learned about the community is that everyone always hates the theme lol. Interesting word game here!

madbeagle 2019-10-24 16:00

@game-mon @bernhard @lumos @brokenmirrormedia Thanks guys, yeah a level reset would be cool. Maybe I'll put that in as I just noticed the game starts at level two....the old 'forget to remove debug flag'?

@lumos Did you solve level 10 in the end or did you get that from the source? No-one should look at that, couldn't even be bothered to tidy the project folder and it's all basically in one script. :D

lumos 2019-10-24 23:37

@madbeagle Looked at the source, I'm afraid. Don't worry about how pretty it is. What matters is whether the game works, and this one certainly does.

That was a brain-bender. I would recommend a level reset option, or at least the option to move a word back off of the board to make more room while trying things.

notime4games 2019-10-25 21:48

Good game, well done! However not being able to reset words kind of took the fun out of it and made it more frustrating. I really liked the sound(except the 'put word down' sound which hurt my ears) and the overall feeling of the game. The background movement and the color slowly changing was a nice touch!

Pretty good game. It was really hard to find good ideas with this theme, and you finally had an original one, well done!

alphish 2019-10-26 09:52

Oh, yay, a fellow word game. The premise is completely different from mine, but it means more originality. ^^ (and from what I've seen, it's not the kind of theme that promotes a varied gameplay, though people still tried)

I enjoy the gameplay concept itself - on one hand, trying to fit the words into the crossword is quite challenging. At the same time no knowledge of English words is required - you could consistently swap each letter with a Chinese character and NOTHING would change - yet the challenge would not.

I'm not a big fan of the controls - for this game, mouse controls would be way simpler and much more convenient (click to select, move around to choose the right location, right-click to rotate, click on board to place). Also, the game could really use word reset and level reset options alike.

I have no idea why the game starts at the level 2. Also, as someone else pointed out, level 10 is impossible (there's only one way to place PLAYING x YOURE on board, and that way locks out THIS). Maybe it would have worked if NOTHING was placed two tiles higher...?

The graphics are aesthetically pleasing, and music - despite being simple - does a good job keeping the player engaged. I liked the story gradually revealed by words in each level, but sadly I couldn't get past level 10.

Overall, pretty well made game, though it could definitely use better controls and the impossible level needs to be fixed.

untitled-studios 2019-10-27 15:55

Amazingly creative! The gameplay wasn't extremely revolutionary, but I **love** how the story is revealed through the words in each level. Music was good, too!

I really liked this one. It has some significant UI problems, the difficulty curve was really bad, and level 10 is impossible, but overall it was an incredibly solid entry. I loved the humor in it especially.

rodrigo-robles 2019-10-27 20:34

Excellent. You got 5 stars in several categories. The background is nice, graphics polished. To improve, the music is a bit annoying.

kowara 2019-10-28 05:17

Music was pretty good, but the SFXs were also good. Really liked that some actions produced variations of the SFX instead of just one sound.

Encountered a bug in LV2 where all words have already been placed correctly but the level isn't registered as 'cleared'. Solved it by randomly dropping one of the words on some other place. Another occasional bug where there are two instances of a word when placed and moved around on the board. Won't disappear, unfortunately.

Also, game begins at LV2 and it would be nice to have a button to reset the board (most people have pointed it out). Although not having one does make you think twice before placing the tiles, heh!

...Nice jab at the theme, though.

What a cool game. Good job! I like the fact that the sound is qualitative and the theme is original and very well done. When talking about difficulty, I can't say that it's completely easy. A few levels put my brain at work. Honestly, I used this scrabble word finder https://wordfinderx.com/scrabble-word-finder/ to get it done, as it was really difficult. Sometimes, this tool can be extremely helpful as it gets you out of trouble. Anyway, this game can help in improving one's vocabulary. For this reason, you can add some other languages. It would be a nice version.
