What a great twist on space invaders! Graphics work really well with all the particles flying around. I encourage you to add some sound and scoring and release this as a finished product.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD44 → American Healthcare

Good choice with the theme :) Giving information about serious topics in video games shouldn't be as uncommon as it is.
I love the effort you put in to making this game look and feel so juicy! Solid gameplay mechanic too, great work.
This is pretty fun, and the angling/turning of the bullets and enemies is great.
Thank you guys, I'm glad you had fun with it, it really means a lot!
@rossng - I'm definitely going to be pushing out some post-jam updates, and I want to work on some music and sound effects for sure. I wish I could have got that in there before time ran out but c'est la vie.
@pixelcrustpunk - I agree! I'm going to personally make an effort to make more games that are more socially conscious.
@repine - Thank you! I got a new "real job" this year so I haven't been spending as much time doing game development, but what little time I've spent I've tried to focus on "game feel." There is still some opportunities for polish, as this was definitely a rushed job, but I'm happy with what I have so far.
@tractorfarm - I love games where you can change the direction of your shots, it's such a small thing but it makes such a big difference.
Yet another piece of proof that I'm a sucker for eye candy. The game could use some sound effects for sure, though.
@abraxas-interactive respect! if you want to team up or need help, send me a message :)
The eye candy is real! I love the screen tilt when moving left and right. Solid game and effort, well done!
Really creative gameplay concept! Takes space invaders to a whole other level. Being able to control the direction of your bullet along with your ship really amped up the satisfying feel of the gameplay.
Hah! Love that theme. The graphics are pretty and the visuals are very dramatic! It's a nice game you made. The screen tilting made me a little nauseous, but I'm prone to vertigo and it is a cool unique effect. I would have liked to been able to shoot more bullets or shoot them faster. Thanks for making this!
(sorry, posted twice)
Good Job! I like the target mechanic. The explosions are great. I just need more money to win. 😅
Fun game! I really like the way the screen rotates, and how you're steering the bullets. The particle effects are just right. Also, that's a really nice interpretation of the theme.
I wasn't sure what my progress was throughout the level though. There was no indication that I lost, aside form it restarting, and I'm not sure if there's a winning condition.
@pincushion Thank you so much! I do plan to work on it more post-LD, and to make it more apparent how you die. As it is, when you die from being hit by an enemy bullet, when you die from being hit by an enemy directly, and when you die from running out of money, it just resets the game, so there's no real difference or indication. There isn't a winning condition at this point, either. Originally the idea was that after killing so many enemies you would progress to the next level, something to that effect will be worked in post-LD. For now, for the LD version, you just try to kill as many enemies as you can before you die.
I really like the control. That's a lot of fun.
This game is a pretty solid space shooter. I like how you can control your bullets by moving side to side. I appreciate the attempt to add some visual flair, but it just winds up being a bit disorienting if I'm honest. I also felt that the use of theme didn't impact the game much, since you're never really at risk of running out of money and are much more likely to get hit by an enemy before that happens. The whole thing about the American health care system on the submission page really doesn't factor into the gameplay at all. That said, this is still a very solid game that I enjoyed playing. Nice work!
@khaoz-fang Thanks that means a lot! Glad you had fun with it!
@superpokeunicorn Thanks for giving it a shot and for the feedback! Sorry to hear you weren't feeling the healthcare metaphor, but I'm glad you enjoyed the game!
This game really needs sound effects.
An interesting approach of the theme and the mechanics are really good ! Great job ! :)
The art style surprised me a lot when I first started, Great job! I love the way it looks!
Hi there, I think this game is pretty good!
Here's some critiques I had:
1) The art seems a bit blurry. I believe this was made in GameMaker? If so, make sure you toggle off Interpolate Colours between Pixels, as it seems to blur pixel art.
2) Sound effects would go a long way in terms of game feel. Music would be nice too!
3) The particle effects are quite nice, but the bright contrasting colours can make it a bit hard to see everything else. That's a minor gripe, though.
Overall, I think it was quite nice. The trailing particle effects of the ship when you move look killer. Keep at it!
@fashionbatman Thank you! Glad you liked it!
@mdWade Thanks for the critique! I'm definitely going to compose and add sound effects and music to the game post-LD, but in 9 hours it was just impossible to do everything I wanted. When it came down to the wire, gameplay was more important than sound for the proof-of-concept.
Quite nice, some sound effects and music would have done wonders for the game. The art is good, but is a bit jarring with the blur and random particle colours. I loved the tilting, was a great feature. I'm not American, but anything that points out the shit show that is their healthcare system gets an upvote from me! A great entry with lots of promise!
I really liked how the visual were distorting with the player movement and loved the particle systems! Visually stunning!
However, the score text that appears each time you destroy an enemy was a bit hard to read, didnt even notice it until I had destroyed about 15!
Psychadelic. I like the way the screen tilts as you steer your bullet, it feels really right and intuitive.. I think it would be better if the enemies were more of a recognizable visual / symbolic representation of healthcare though. They seemed more like symbols for computer networking or something, haha.
The theme is quite invisible but I did put some stars for the political message ! Fun game to play, took me a bit to understand how it worked. Visual effects are so good I was almost imagining the sound effects going with them x) Cheers !
Is there a way to play this game not in fullscreen? The style seems really neat and clean from the gif, but on my screen(2560x1440) it's a blurry mess. While the controls are fun, they aren't so good for people prone to motion sickness or similar.
@HugzFnr - Thanks so much!
@thecritterscove - Glad you had fun, and thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately I didn't have time to test it on different resolutions but I'll keep that in mind.
