Nice style and gameplay! Reminds of Galaga and clones! For some reason after failing the boss, on restart, the bullets of the boss continue to spawn in additions to the regular ones!

karai17 2017-08-01 17:32

Thanks! Yeah, we plan to patch it today to fix a couple bugs we ended up finding.

I'm not a fan of bullet-hell shooters, so bear that in mind.

The music is pretty good, and the motion of all the bullets was such that I never felt that it was unfair. I DID feel that I moved too slowly to hit some of the enemies without knowing their pattern beforehand (but maybe that's the point?). I really don't understand what the shield button does and I never became comfortable with the dodge button.

everbrave 2017-08-02 00:32

Pretty decent overall. I appreciate that you made a bullet hell game that somehow involved teddy bears. But to be frank, I would have expected a bit more from two developers.

bobsleigh 2017-08-02 00:34

Haha I had a good bit of fun with this game. The graphics are decent but could use a bit of polish. I feel like the player's hitbox was clear enough to dodge with confidence. I could get through the last phase of the boss, but that might just be me needing more practice. Good job overall!

I think this game needs some sound effects pretty badly, I think it would have felt a lot better with shooting / hitting sound effects. The screen shake was also pretty crazy and may have been served to be toned down a little bit.

Overall I had fun with the game, it is a pretty good shmup. The effects and such that were done here were really nice looking and gave satisfaction on defeating enemies (but would have been even better with sound effects ). I am slightly confused about the shield mechanic, I think I would have preferred lives or something rather than that, as holding down x while running through fire was a little awkward, and not holding x resulted in having to restart. I didn't actually beat the first boss, so take that for what it is. I think the difficulty may be a bit high.

holo 2017-08-02 01:10

@doomshmuck: shield was intended to scale with difficulty. we ran out of time for sound effects trying to make the levels (which took significantly longer than @everbrave seems to think when we didn't have any of the relevant code for this type of game...)

@bobsleigh: hitbox is top of torso

I found the art quite poor, could have more elements to make the scenery more beautiful. The mechanics gave a lot of possibilities for building enemies, but the fact that destroying the enemy eliminates the attacks that are coming our way made the game very easy for the boss. The boss was in agreement with the mechanics of bullet hell, but the bullets that came towards him also disappeared after a while. Other than that, I did not find it was the connection between the game and the theme, but okay.

natrium729 2017-08-02 01:30

I found that the first part was really easy (since the enemy bullets disappear when the are killed) and the sister was too hard (I couldn't beat her). And since you have to restart from the begining when you lose, it became a bit tiring. I think one of the problem is that that the collision of the player is a bit too big.

Or maybe I am very bad at this kind of game? :p

junkdeck 2017-08-02 15:39

i really like the bullet patterns but i don't like how they disappear after you defeat the enemies. some sfx (even just randomly generated bleeps from sfxr!) would have gone a long way for giving the action more "oomph", too.

lamm 2017-08-03 20:31

great game, you did a good job

tybantarnusa 2017-08-04 02:17

It is like Touhou! I like it, agree with others, it needs sound effects, other than that the game feels good. However, I have problem with the graphics color, I don't know why the color is weird (inverted?) on my pc. Well done!

omriysh 2017-08-04 21:38

Nice game! Fun little bullet hell. Not easy, too.

easy82 2017-08-04 22:05

Finally I've got to try out this game! :) I've really liked the effects, the bulletstorms, and also the music. Also the dialog system was a cool addition. The second bossfight was too difficult for me, I couldn't beat her, there were too many bullets and insta-death. It was fun to play! Oh, the Z key is swapped on my keyboard with Y because of the hungarian layout, so it was kind of difficult to use the other controls. Nice job guys, keep it up! :)

Fun danmaku shooting game! I beat it on my second try! On my first try I blew through my shields while trying to discern the controls and then one of Blossom's attack patterns caught me off-guard.

I enjoyed the music a lot, but I generally agree with everyone else that sound would have enhanced it a lot. I think the character models were 3d, but it was a little hard to appreciate them based on how tiny they were rendered?

I have one gameplay critique: I found the movement speed too slow, please add Marisa to the game! It was fine for dodging fine projectiles, but it definitely felt sluggish when just trying to move across the screen. On my first attempt the first thing I did was mash shift to try to dash around the screen faster, but I quickly realized that you can only do that so much, oops!

Overall I had a lot of fun soaring through the sky in my Civilian T-pose as Erin! I'd love to see this extended into something longer! I'll shamelessly suggest that you check out my own LD39 game, you're not the only ones who made a bullet hell game in Love2d!

karai17 2017-08-06 06:17

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone!

Yes, I agree, sfx would have really helped a lot. We totally ran out of time before we could implement some of the finer polish for the game that we've had in past games. We are currently toying with different mechanics and improving the code in various ways to give us a lot more flexibility with the engine in the future.

The whole scene is actually 3D despite how it looks. the bullets are all just billboards and the player models are full 3D objects. They were modeled with fairly realistic proportions (if you check out any of @holo's work on Twitter, you'll note he's pretty good at modeling that sort of thing) so it ended up being difficult to see any of the detail in the models. In the future, we will probably have moe stylized models that better show off their features, and more interesting shaders and lighting too.

In the current build of the game, we have dodging remove one of your shields. This totally sucks! But I feel like if we remove it, that might change the game abit too much to qualify in LD, so we left that in. In a futurre release, movement speed may be increased and dodging will have no penalty unless you take a hit while dodging (same as how shielding only decreases when it takes a bullet).

I have been trying to get to everyone's games who have rated ours, so if you leave a comment, I'll play your game!

mathiouza 2017-08-08 01:54

Cool bullet hell ! Cool music too. But ... I do not really like the art, sorry x) Good experience though !

besslaaneshi 2017-08-08 06:50

Fun and easy! Really needs some powerups! :) and SFX. But nice game, i get fun playing it.

eremiell 2017-08-08 18:29

Now that's some action packed top down shooter you've got there!

I love the colour circles on squared paper graphics, you're not trying to hide it's a jam game and it still looks great. Also the music's nice. Sadly didn't beat it. Still nice one. Way to go!

g12345 2017-08-20 09:00

I beat it in a few goes. It's pretty okay for a short shooter. If you have time I'm sure you can fix the story and add more meat to the game. To be honest I like the current small size but if you want to make a game for sale, it's going to be a bit longer.

There could be some extra graphics improvements on the background but I find this easy on the eyes.
