Can't run the game :(

jk5000 2016-08-29 07:54

@DarkGrisen i am sorry you can't play my game, but at least you tried.

creativwhisper 2016-08-29 08:05

It's a good game but is poorly optimized, very low FPS on a medium machine. The core mechanic is interesting but the first player seems to have a little advantage over the second.

bogden 2016-08-29 08:11

Graphics: Really smooth, the aesthetics match the style of a game board really well. Almost felt like a model that could be on a tabletop, with a sweet forest model around it. Camera controls were really smooth too.

Audio: Love the voices, the unit responses were pretty funny. Was the wind also done a capella?

Theme: Pretty well incorporated.

Fun: Unfortunately the gameplay didn't quite come up as strong as the other areas here. The mechanics of the actual game didn't feel very balanced, since you only move and attack with one piece per turn, you effectively can't ever move within 4 tiles of an enemy piece. The pieces also move suuuuuper slowly, and the turns progress slowly as well, making it difficult to play out a whole game while keeping it fun.

Innovation: I like the idea of making a simple tabletop game with rules that anyone could pick up, so good job on that!

Overall a pretty sweet entry that feels very polished. I might spend more time in the prototyping phase to make sure you nail some fun gameplay elements before doing the rest of the polish. Paper prototypes could help out too, especially with a game like this, where it's essentially a digital board game. Good job!

studdert249 2016-08-29 08:12

After I got the game running (windows 10 wanted to block it on me for some reason...) I found it quite fun if a little slow, the long delay between turns was probably the main culprit and the voiceover sounds got quite a few laughs from me.

jk5000 2016-08-29 08:46

@Bogden I know that the gameplay is slow, and I tested the game where you were able to move the catapult longer, but it made it much too easy to kill your opponent, and that made the game less fun. Personly I have nothing against that the game is slow, but I know it's not reallya great game for a jam, where the uses have little time on each game. But still thank you for the great feedback.

jk5000 2016-08-29 08:52

@studdert249 the win10 block is offten a issue with games made with Unreal engine 4. I don't know if can do anything about that. But thank you for your feedback. And I am glad that you had some fun with my wierd voiceover.

jackyjjc 2016-08-29 09:51

Haha love the custom game sounds you made. The game runs very slowly on my geforce gtx 640M laptop graphics card. If it runs better it will be more fun to play. Love the graphs tho, those models looks adorable!

themightysice 2016-08-29 09:54

The theme was acurate. The selfmade Soundeffects are funny. And the game overall is solid and playable. Good job there!

asteryz 2016-08-29 10:06

As others have said delays between turns are to long. And im afraid blue has a huge advantage because they get to start. If they play smart they can't lose. Maybe red can force a draw, but I didn't have time to experiment.

Overall nice style and funny audio.

dietzribi 2016-08-29 10:49

LOL the sound effects were really hilarious!
The graphics were cool, two issues I had:
1. The game was too slow
2. After choosing a catapult if I changed my mind I couldn't find a way to cancel and choose another one
Great work!

jk5000 2016-08-29 11:21

@dietzribi (issues two) if you have choosen the wrong catapult, you can click on the cancel button in the HUD.

dietzribi 2016-08-29 11:34

@JK5000 Totally missed it, but I think it would be more intuitive if you could just select a different one and it would automatically cancel the last one you selected

qwaklak 2016-08-29 11:44

Too slow gameplay

jk5000 2016-08-29 12:03

QUESTION: I can see that many players complain that the game is too slow. Can the experience not be due to you're trying to play a two player game alone?

@asteryz sayed "delays Between turns are to long", but does this delay feels long if you play with someone? The break is there to prevent you accidentally continue to play into the opponent's turn.

I have tested the game alot, and I do not find it super slow. An important part of avoiding that it becomes slow, is to have catapults placed on the bonus fields. If one player controlles the bonus fields, he/she can win relatively quickly.

I know some players having trouble getting the game to run fast on their computers, and sorry about that, but I am more interested to hear from you who fields that game is slow.

By the way I have found and removet a small bug in the game.

jk5000 2016-08-29 12:07

@dietzribi you are right, I will perhaps change this in a later version of the game.

sn0uk 2016-08-29 12:12

Can't open the game because of 32 bit.. Shame :(

kitkom 2016-08-29 13:32

I have to rate it 10/10 for the audio
But it really lags on my PC, it requires patience to finish a game

myisaak 2016-08-29 17:48

I think you put a lot of time into the design of the game, at least in my point of view: The game looks fantastic. But when I actually played it, I became a bit bored, I would have really enjoyed it much more if the game wasn't so slow but in overall its neat! Nice job ;)

jk5000 2016-08-29 18:39

@MyIsaak it perhaps sounds strange, but I did not use much time making meshes and game design, but I used alot of time on programing.

By the way I have uploaded a updated version of the game. The updated chance nothing in the gameplay, but I hope it helps reducing the frame rate issue.

lordvorath 2016-08-29 19:50

I really want to try this game with a friend, like many have said before it feels "slow". I think that comes from the fact that only one move is allowed per turn, making it very hard to build effective strategies because that would take even more time and you want to get control of the bonus tiles quicklyto secure the victory.
But like i said: needs testing with a friend.
Nice graphics, nice sound effects, don't really enjoy the voice acting though i get the point, i would have preferred another sound effect of some kind (maybe simulating wooden wheels turning on grass but maybe i'm exaggerating).
Sorry for not being able to provide more insightful feedback.

blinry 2016-08-29 20:33

Good job on the 3D models! :) We also enjoyed the "crash" sound! ;-) The game's pacing seemed a little slow, we would have liked to be able to skip the turn animations, for example. Surely would be suited as a board game, we got into a little strategic discussion. If you keep working on the game, maybe add some weapon upgrades? And music!

2016-08-30 06:54

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! Simple mechanics that still offered a decent amount of challenge. We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.

wicked7000 2016-08-30 10:44

I want to start by saying overall it was a great game! The mechanics were solid all I would say is firstly it could of used some more background music it felt a bit empty at times and also it took a really long time to get into 'combat' due to the limitations of the movement but the game was well constructed.

xakkar 2016-08-30 10:44

Pretty good =)

jk5000 2016-08-30 11:14

@Wicked7000 yes, the game needs some music. I will consider including some music in later version, but for now you have to find another way to hear music while playing the game.

teamfireman 2016-08-30 12:22

The gameplay is fine, but not really interesting.. It's like checkers - nothing special happens with different catapults. The game was too laggy for me to play more than 10 turns, but the graphics were fine, so it's kinda forgivable.
The game is ok, but some sounds, lag preventing, and a little more sophisticated gameplay would be better

wevel 2016-08-30 14:28

Nice game, Very funny sound Fx, would be nice to see an online multiplayer or at least an AI to play against

jk5000 2016-08-30 14:47

@Wevel thank you for your kind words. I will consider making a AI to play against, but I don't think I will make it to a online multiplayer, but I like the idea.

linus123xbb 2016-08-30 15:24

It would be nice to have a Linux build, I'd like to try the game.

jk5000 2016-08-30 15:58

@Linus123xbb i am sorry, but I can not make a Linux build.

maximumillusion 2016-08-30 20:10

The models are good :) minilalistic and the environment is nice and i have to agree that it's a bit slow...

But with some more work and online it will be nice to play :)

stenol 2016-08-30 20:12

Pretty cool game !

drazil100 2016-08-30 20:40

Interesting game with funny sound effects but I didn't have a second person to play it with so I could only play against myself.

hawkinslance 2016-08-30 21:09

This is a very solid well-made game. The sound effects are funny. If this game had online multiplayer it would be more enjoyable.

monsieurduc 2016-08-30 21:32

bug when i try to play the 2 player at the same time but anyway good joob !!!

elit3dgaming 2016-08-30 22:19

Would be great if I could play against AI, apart from that strong submission and audio was funny.

aaranos 2016-08-31 00:48

I'm not a fan of the sound effects. The game could benefit from different units or a smaller field since the first few turns are rather slow. I do find it to be good base to expand on though.

I tested friendly fire and was actually surprised it was allowed.

everard999 2016-08-31 03:19

A pretty solid gameplay! i love tilebased games haahah :D

whitepot_studios 2016-08-31 05:39

I like the the clean board game-esque art style and I loved the sound assets, really reminded me of something like worms.

As others have said, game-play and turn progression was a bit slow for my tastes and I found it hard to move in for a kill without running right into a counter attack.

A quality of life improvement I'd really like to see would be being able to change the selected catapult with out having to go down and click cancel at the bottom of the screen.

zee 2016-08-31 07:23

A simple but neat board game. I really dug the sound effects and the ascetics!

As others suggested, you should speed the turns up a little and clean up the UI so you didn't have to go back and fourth from the game-board to the menu at the bottom.

If the game-play was a little bit deeper, you could have something going with this!

sun-wukong 2016-08-31 09:18

Looks pretty and sounds funny but it feels very slow-paced.
Players have very little to do during they turn and turn changes very slow. It could have a little more depth to it too.

tmpxyz 2016-08-31 14:54

A lovely board game, hope there're more mechanics and content

gonutz 2016-08-31 21:40

I downloaded the Win32 version of your game but it gives me the 'not a valid Win32 app' error message when I try to run it.

jk5000 2016-09-01 06:22

@gonutz thank you for telling me this. I don“t know way you are getting this message, because it is a win 32 program.

kai20 2016-09-01 19:45

It works at my pc but the hole space is just too big. Also i dont have any friends but it looks polished and sounds awesome. FEUER

heliosstudio 2016-09-05 03:02

"A great plan sir"
*Proceeds to shoot one of my catapults*

It's a pretty nice game, the idea is simple but works nicely

iseeicy 2016-09-07 00:01

The sound effects are amazing. I didn't play this with a friend, but I imagine it would be pretty fun to do.
