The sound was mildly grating, but I really like the graphics and general theme.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD33 → Eat Humans

Fun little game! You could add a health bar to your player perhaps? :D
Thanks for playing! Health bar would have been great to include. :)
Somehow icky controls around the tables, but really cute and fun :)
The music fit the humorous mood nicely.
It was pretty difficult to avoid the grey guys especially since they can zip around the tables pretty easily. I think the aiming in general could be a little more forgiving.
Neat idea!
Nice!
First off, let me say that the web build didn't work for me (you mentioned it was buggy). However, I got the windows version to run well.
The audio and graphics of the game are pretty great. While some of the sounds, particularly on the sawblade, are a bit annoying (too much buzzing), I think the background music and the screams of the humans fit very nicely with the cartoon-y drawings. Together, they fit the theme well and give off a nice vibe.
My main concern is with different aspects of the gameplay that could be improved. I'd like it if the health bar was a bit more obvious and visible. The hitboxes seem a off, and I found it fairly difficult to actually land some of my shots, particularly on the gray humans when they were chasing me. In fact, it would be cool if hitting an enemy with the wrong type of ability had consequences. What if setting the green dudes on fire lead to less points, or if fire-ing frozen blue humans thawed them? There's a lot of potential for encouraging the player to use combos or cautious strategy in this type of game.
Building off that, why the preference for sawblade, awarding points (and the most points) for three different types of humans? More specifically, why not just spam sawblade and run around pressing spacebar as much as possible? Why not just spam all abilities while running around pressing spacebar on as many humans as possible? Again, since there don't seem to be any ways to use an ability wrong, I may as well just spam (or something similar) to achieve maximum score.
In terms of more basic things, I'd recommend adding some type of in-game tutorial and/or description of abilities; initially, I was pretty confused because I just guessed that I should use the mouse, discovered that clicking the mouse buttons did things (the game was probably reading my mouse as a controller), and kept playing with that assumption for a while. It would also be nice if the transition between timer running out and the title screen was less jarring. Maybe a scoreboard or something like that?
There are of course plenty of other things you could add or expand upon, as is the case with all games (especially those made within a 72 hour time frame). I would definitely encourage you to keep working on this title. It has a great style and I'd love to see it fleshed out more.
Congrats on the entry!
Sound a bit loud but funny, and I like the idea of a human-eater monster! Just I had some problems with web build, but I understand it because of the short time.
Like the art of humans, reminds me at prision architect.
Game it's fun to play, maybe lack tutorial where see different powers. Nonetheless good game :D
I just knew the WebGL version was going to fail horribly. First time trying a Unity WebGL build and I didn’t familiarize myself with the player settings. I need to educate myself here, so I can do it right next time. Thanks for letting me know! :)
I agree that some of the sounds selected are a bit annoying. It was one of those things where: do I fix it or just move on and fix it if I have time in the end. So, fix it in the end did not happen. Darn it. LOL. One thing that bugged me was the levels of all the audio and how the SFX and BGM were out of balance. Live and learn. I know I can do better!
I totally agree with the health bar issue. I’ll fix that. Putting in consequential elements was definitely something I wanted to do, but ran out of time. I had it started in my code, but in the end 1 hour became 10 minutes in a flash and I needed to start building. That excuse given, I’ll fix that too. The hit boxes I will investigate and fix. I failed to do any proper playtesting, which is incredibly important. I need to get more organized and faster doing things for next LDJAM. Practice, Practice, Practice!
To be honest, I have no clue what I was doing there in regards to the scoring. I need to study and analyze scoring mechanics and structures of other games. I just did what I did on the fly with no fore thought. Lame, I know. This is something I need to really work on and get my act together.
After I submitted the game, I ended up testing the game a few goes and found this big mistake in the keyboard controls. The start button for a controller was also messed up. Still learning and I'm bound and determined to get this down. A results screen needs to happen, for sure.
I'll be working on this one a bit more, so I can explore and learn from everything that I failed to do or include.
I appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions!
The music was very fitting.
Solid entry, I like the art and audio.
I loved the graphics, humor, and mood! Excellent work! The health needs to be a little bit less stealth, but overall it plays well! The choice of a restaurant location is perfect :)
This is a very funny game :) the sounds were hilarious although some were too abrasive. I love the graphics and mouth animations.
hehehe that was funny
Hmm... delicious!
The mood is good! Very fun game! Nice music!
Funny/toon graphics!
The sound effect was hectic, too much so. I also couldn't quite figure out how play, when I shot the balls nothing happened when it went past/through the dudes walking around, which I assume is a bug.
@Pomb
I just played it and I see what you are saying. This is something I screwed up on. I know not having a tutorial/explanation of game play of sorts really kills the player experience; even a screen at the beginning just diagrammatically would have been good to include. I wish I would have done that. The gray humans can only be killed with the fireball, all other shots will fly through them. Going back to what jodizzle was mentioning in his 4th paragraph, there should have been some consequences for hitting each type of human with the wrong type of shot. Plus, from your comment, the shot should be destroy upon hitting a human. Not just a bug, but my mistake to include a simple, one line of code. DOH!
I appreciate all the comments. It is really helping me out a lot. :)
Actually, shots that are not meant for that type of human will fly through them...dang. <Slaps forehead>
Very nice project guys, i really love it, please check our game too and if you liked it give us a vote. Look for Road to hell and enjoy.
Hahaha, that was fun!
The way different powers/attacks affect the score is a tad confusing and is not explained in the game, but it doesn't really take from the fun that is causing mayhem and eating humans! (never thought I would ever say that, lol).
A really fun and polished entry overall! Good job!
Robot sound might need some tweaking :) otherwise a fun little game.
Fyi we say "plat de résistance", not "pièce" XD I'm not sure I got everything, but it's cute and fun. I agree with the health bar thing, and I'm wondering maybe you could automatically eat humans when you're close
@bodsey
Thanks for the FYI. I'll correct that in the post version! :) I'll try the auto-eat idea and see how it feels.
That was a funny game. The visuals remembers me BattleBlock Theathre a little. Good work
The art style is nice, i like the humor in it.
Just fun to slay people at the restaurant, it is as satisfying as taking dessert :P
good entry :)
Those grey humans were pretty relentless. Actually took a while for me to work out how to score points in this game but it's a fun entry plus the voice acting was hilarious.
Funny little concept! Nice idea with the people getting more points for the specific attack, but could have been more clear why. Good work overall though, and great sound effects!
The game was nice overall, cute music and graphics. The sound was pretty cool! I had a hard time understanding at first that the gray ones were damaging me and even often I wasn't sure if I was hit or not. I'm also not sure if there is a different strategical reason to use one ability over the other. But a little polish in these areas and the game would be great!
Thanks everyone for your votes and comments. All the feedback has been very helpful and drives me to push harder to improve my game development skills! See you all in Ludum Dare 34!
