A little bit hard, but pretty fun. I found it impossible to attack anything without getting hurt myself.

Old skool 4-evar. Best timelapse so far. And no it's not fair that you always take damage while fighting.. but sneaky running makes up for it.
Is it possible to attack someone?
Nice game. Kinda hard though. I kept dying pretty quickly. Interesting choice of characters too. Are you saying women are monsters? ;-)
Also, good choice for music on the timelapse.
Hah, I like roguelikes. :) I think it didn't have to be *that* minimal, in terms of landscape and everything, but still it's a flawless ASCII game.
Great fun. Made me really want to play dwarf fortress again. I was mad that I couldn't defend myself with the sword without getting hurt too, but once I found the bow those evil female monsters got owned.
Neat little game
Once I found the bow I was all set. Enjoyed the simple puzzles and the little text statuses that showed up at the bottom. I thought the little 'monster stopped following' messages were funny. I didn't even connect the 'female' sign with the monsters.. that is funny, took me a second to get what everyone was saying about female monsters.. heh. Guess I just see the ascii as shapes and imaging the critters / items. This also made me want to play dwarf fortress again. ;) All in all, it was an enjoyable 5-10 minutes of playing. Thanks!
Nice to see an ASCII game again.
It makes me remember when i was i child...
One of my top two favorites so far (I'm halfway through rating things). It was funny, complete, and you got to shoot guys with infinite arrows. Only compliant would be that 'a' and 's' keys don't allow you to loop through the list, when you get to the bottom of your list, you can't hit 's' again and make it wrap to the top, you gotta hit 'a'. But overall very good game.
Easier to avoid death once you get the bow, I like the variety in the treasures, and the overall simplicity of the game. Good job.
I fought in despair a few rounds, then there was the bow and I won the game pretty soon. Good work.
A bit unbalanced in the way that battles are too hard when you don't have a bow and trivial when you have one. Otherwise a very nice game. GREAT TIMELAPSE! :)
I really liked how you could use the various treasures to get other treasures. It was really difficult to kill the enemies with the sword, but once you get the bow, it was insanely easy. The messages when the monsters stop chasing you are funny.
It was well put together and felt finished. The timelapse was fun.
I'm glad I found comments talking about a bow, or I would've given up. Pretty flawed in that you are doomed at first and then invincible once you have the bow! But it was still fun anyway. Reminded me so much of the old IBM games, back before they had numbers like 286 and 386. If only there had been PC speaker sounds (sfxr could do it!).
My favorite thing was "The monster curses its stubby little legs." Good game all around, despite the huge balance issue. Obviously could do with a few hundred more treasures and interactions, but you minimally covered them during this minimal compo.
Really enjoyed this, reminded me of the old MS-DOS Castle that was one of my favorite games as a kid. I finished it .. was hard until I got the bow. With a few more levels, a few more monster types, some locked doors with keys and maybe one or two more weapons, this would essentially be better than Zelda 1, and almost match Diablo. I'm only half kidding. A few bleepy sounds would have been nice, maybe a PC-speaker intro tune, and for when the harp is played. Thanks, I had a great 10 - 15 mins fun.
I may as well not have a sword. It's better to just kite the monsters in the beginning. The game reminds me of the tile-based zelda games. It was engaging for a few minutes, but got boring once I had the bow.
I found this to be really fun; also count me in the group that's annoyed you can't attack enemies with the sword without taking damage; the bow is really too easy by comparison (you can shoot through walls too)
So sweet! I used to play the old dos castle game too so there was lots of nostalgia. Lots of fun and a good fit to the theme. extended ascii rocks.
text + gfx = win. didnt have time to play through it all, but the game is nice
You need the Visual C++ 2005 SP1 redistributable and the .NET 2.0 redistributable to run the supplied exe. Really fun while it lasted, and very minimalist. It was a bit easy once I got the bow. I noticed that when you stand on a special square, the description of the area gets repeated many times, filling the message window.
