| Jan 8 21:52:30 | Public service announcement | ♥ 1 | Nice movie! I genuinely enjoyed the sh*tton of badly written text, and the graphics were really nice! I also liked your original idea - too bad you didn't make it, but at least this thing was funny. | |
| Jan 8 22:05:44 | 13m 14s | Propaganda | ♥ 1 | Nice game! I liked your take on the theme, and the graphics were pretty cool. It got quite hard near the end, but I managed to finish it! 30 heads did feel like a bit too much though - it got pretty repetitive near the end - bu otherwise, good entry! |
| Jan 8 22:09:27 | 3m 43s | Boar'd'Hell | ♥ 2 | I tried to run the game, but it didn't work for me on Firefox :( Maybe it's just not finished yet, but here's a screenshot just in case. Screenshot 2023-01-08 230851.png |
| Jan 8 22:17:55 | 8m 28s | HARZARD OR HARVEST | ♥ 1 | Nice game! I really loved the art-style, and the tutorial as part of the level was well made. I also liked all the little animations and particle effects. It was a bit annoying to jump over the small pits - especially as I couldn't see my shadow over them, which made it very hard to estimate where I'll land (and led to many deaths). There was a bug though where sometimes when falling down a hole and dying the restart screen wouldn't appear, and the game would be stuck forever. It happened to me twice (once in level 3 and once in level 2), and it was annoying to restart the entire game each time, so unfortunately I didn't finish it :( Other than that, great entry! |
| Jan 9 10:41:16 | 12h 23m | The Bountiful | ♥ 1 | Awesome game! I loved the title music, and all the voice acting in general - the crow was great! I also enjoyed the plot, and all the animations were super polished. In my first run, I killed the neighbor on the first day (because the instructions told me to) and ended up missing a bunch of dialogue, which was a bit sad. On the second, I tried to speedrun a bit, and finished in 5:20 minutes - not sure whether that's a good time, but still. Overall, amazing entry! |
| Jan 9 10:53:45 | 12m 29s | Plant Harvester | ♥ 1 | Really nice game! I loved the plant sprites & animations, they were really good! The game was quite hard - steering was a nightmare - but it got better as you received upgrades. I didn't really get what each plant did until my ~4th attempt, although that's on me for only reading the description after playing. It was also a bit unclear what happened when the timer ran out for the first time, but even though I was prepared on the second time, I still lost :( Nevertheless, my final score was 791. Overall, great entry! |
| Jan 9 11:20:40 | 26m 55s | Fallowtide | ♥ 2 | Amazing game! I knew that it had some creepy elements from the description and screenshots, but the first few turns were so calm and normal the goat really caught me by surprise (I tried planting and feeding it multiple times before realizing its actual purpose). The graphics and mood were absolutely incredible, and the ending was awesome! I also quite enjoyed the game - it was pretty easy and relaxing, but still required some thought. One problem I had though was that the card preview only displayed the top half of the shape of the crop, leading me to instinctively interpret (usually incorrectly) what the bottom half was. Multiple times, I planned my turn around playing a specific last card, only to realize it wasn't the shape I thought it was, and by then it was too late. While it's probably on me for being too lazy to hover over all my cards, I think there's enough screen space to show all of them completely at all times. Other than that, great entry! |
| Jan 9 18:08:19 | 6h 47m | Fading Souls | ♥ 2 | Very nice game! The graphics were really awesome, and together with the audio created an incredible mood! I also loved your take on the theme, where the enemies are the ones harvesting. While the audio cue when a devourer was nearby was very good, it felt a bit quiet - on my first run, by the time I noticed it it was too late. The devourers in general had a bit unpredictable AI - sometimes they would chase me across great distanced, barely slowing down to eat souls in their path, while other times they'd just stand around for like half a minute doing nothing. The souls devoured indicator felt a bit weird too, as most of the souls were devoured off-screen, where I had no chance of saving them, nor any idea where they even were. For my score, my "best rate" run was 7:0, and most souls saved was 50:26 (although I felt like I could probably go on indefinitely there - the game is quite easy if you just lure the devourers towards clusters of souls). Overall, great entry! |
| Jan 9 19:54:55 | 1h 46m | Harvest Tataki - Whac-a-carrot | ♥ 2 | Really nice game! I loved all the graphics and particle effects - this was very impressive for a PICO-8 game! I also really liked using the sun and carrot piles for time & score counters, although seeing my exact score would've been nice (it was very hard to estimate from the carrot pile how close I was to my high-score). I thought the speed change happened according to the time and not carrots until I read the comments, which led to me to give up if I missed too many early carrots (as it was nigh impossible once it got fast). In the end, my strategy was to play carefully until reaching about 50, then to mash all buttons and hope for the best. It took multiple tries, but I managed to beat the high-score! Pressing Win+S returned me to the title screen unfortunately, but it's visible in the corner. Screenshot 2023-01-09 204829.png |
| Jan 9 21:49:20 | 1h 54m | Cardwork Cycle | ♥ 3 | Managed to beat it on hard! It was really nice. I liked the concept of farming as a mysterious magical art :) The minimalist graphics were very nice too, and I liked the calm background music. The game-play was pretty cool too: I especially liked how you went from being almost unable to grow a single plant without it dying of thirst, to growing the mystical fruit with 10 health remaining. In general, the idea of growing plants to get new cards to help you grow more plants was super cool - I kind of wish the Quality Seeds were unlock-able too, if only to reinforce that feeling of growing. The game did feel a bit unbalanced, though (like most game jam games, but still), mostly due to some cards and shop items feeling much better/worse than others. The core problem was (in my opinion) that there were a lot of turns where there were no enemies - even on hard mode - wasting all attack and most resistance cards. This led to an unfortunate situation where picking attack cards always seemed like a bad option, as they'd be completely useless half of the time. And when enemies did arrive, I usually didn't have enough attacks to deal with them as I mostly took watering cards. While this wasn't a problem on normal - where the default attack & block cards were enough to deal with all enemies for the entire game - it was on hard. Generally, on normal, I think I only took one card which wasn't about watering (Free Energy notwithstanding), and that was the vampire card. Speaking of vampire cards, those felt incredibly powerful, and I just took them instead of normal attack/block cards. Besides having both attacking and blocking properties (which already made them better than the normal attack/block ones), they were also useful even without enemies, as increasing plant health increased the reward quality. I just filled my deck with vampire cards, Watering Cans and Rainfalls (the best card in the game in my opinion), and the rest was pretty much a cakewalk. The high energy cost was easily offset with the energy upgrades from the shop and Free Energy cards. Regarding the shop, while I liked the concept of increasing the farm size (especially for stuff like watering bucket), it just wasn't worth the price in my opinion. Money wasn't that easy to come by, and getting more energy each turn was incredibly powerful. Perhaps if the 2x2 land slot wasn't available by default it would be more powerful? Because I planted almost all my plants there for Watering Cans. All in all, I really enjoyed this game - I played it for almost an hour - and I probably overthought the balancing of a Ludum Dare game. Also, I think I'm the actual first farmer to grow the mystical plant :) Screenshot 2023-01-09 222519.png |
| Jan 10 09:43:46 | 11h 54m | Slime Crime | ♥ 3 | Great game! All the animations and effects (both audio and visual) were awesome, and I really liked all the sprites - especially the title screen! The gameplay was a lot of fun too - I loved the upgrade system, and the upgrades depending on the enemy types you ate were an excellent idea. And the boss fight at he end was a pleasant surprise! The game did become a bit easy once I got the Sharp Fangs+ and Harvest God+, as eating was pretty much instantaneous and usually healed me. Eating in general was actually more interesting to me without the Sharp Fangs upgrade, as it had a high risk-high reward element where you might get attacked while eating which I quite enjoyed. Speaking of which, while the feeding animation was super cool, it did make it a bit hard to see my surroundings while eating. Lastly, were the rabbits actually harmless? I kept expecting them to pull a Monty Python and kill me, but they never seemed to attack. All in all, excellent entry! |
| Jan 10 10:00:56 | 17m 10s | Ramming into Trees | ♥ 2 | Nice game! I liked the graphics, and the mechanics were very cool and unique. I also loved the day-night cycle, it was very nice! I also enjoyed reading the tree names & titles :) Some things were a bit unintuitive to me at first - how do I pay for stuff? what does the gym do? what does the engine do? - but I managed to figure them out during the game. One minor problem I had though was that I exhausted all lemons in the trees above the basket shop to buy the biggest basket, and it took me a while until I realized there was another batch elsewhere, so I felt stuck for a bit. Other than that, good entry! |
| Jan 10 10:10:36 | 9m 40s | It's a Platformer | ♥ 1 | Nice game! I was not expecting to play an actual Gameboy rom this jam - that is very impressive! The game was quite simple but enjoyable. It was a bit annoying that you couldn't affect your movement at all mid-air, but it matched the old-school feeling. And I also had the buggy end screen, but other than that, good entry! |
| Jan 10 10:24:53 | 14m 17s | Planetary Mining CO. | ♥ 1 | Nice game! The planet generation was very cool, and the graphics in general were pretty nice. At first I didn't really understand what I was supposed to do after harvesting all the trees and mountains, but accidentally clicking on the barren earth and mining it was a mind-blowing moment. In the end, I managed to leave nothing but the (tiny) core of the planet. One thing that was a bit confusing was that the new planet button was the first option (and sounded very similar to new game), so I kept clicking it expecting to enter the game. Other than that, good entry! |
| Jan 11 12:01:38 | 25h 36m | Harrr-vest | ♥ 1 | Amazing game! I loved the premise, and the dialogue was hilarious. The secret ending was also very cool and unexpected - I loved how you managed to turn a ridiculous concept into an emotional story, and the foreshadowing for it was excellent. It was a bit annoying to restart the entire game each time, though - I found myself skipping a lot of the dialogue in subsequent playthroughs, and sometimes missed the new parts because of that - and the web build didn't work on Firefox for some reason, but otherwise, great entry! |
| Jan 11 13:18:09 | 1h 16m | Lavender Fields Forever | ♥ 2 | Amazing game! The gameplay was awesome, and the graphics incredible. The music and sound effects were quite good too. Overall, this was an almost perfect entry. I did have a few minor nitpicks, though (at least in the Jam version, I didn't try the 1.2 one): - It took me forever to realize what roads did. At first I thought they just prevented my animals from building where I placed them. Only after using it for that feature a lot did I notice the speed increase. - It was also unclear what some upgrades did just from the name, especially at the beginning when I didn't really understand the game. A description would've been nice. But I really liked the Shotgun King reference :) - Sometimes, when shooting in narrow corridors, the bullets hit the walls and disappeared before hitting the gnome on the way. This made narrow corridors kinda useless to block gnomes. Once I got the turrets, however, they became viable again (as bullets pass through turrets). - The friends AI was a bit stupid at time: they kept trying to plant stuff outside the walls because it was technically close to the shelter. I ended up solving it by surrounding my base with roads, but it cost a ton of lavender and felt a bit weird. - Speaking of shelters, I didn't understand whether they cost 10 or 0 lavenders. For the longest time I couldn't figure out why I couldn't build a second shelter, until I reached 10 lavender and it suddenly lit up. - Lastly, the first spire upgrade claims to unlock rabbits and the second meerkats, but from what I've seen the second one unlocks both. All in all, I really enjoyed it! Here's my final base: Screenshot 2023-01-11 140214.png |
| Jan 11 22:21:15 | 9h 03m | Inside | ♥ 1 | Hilarious game! I loved the characters, dialogue, premise, voice acting - everything! There were some really awesome and surprising moments I did not expect, especially the one with the scarecrow. The amount of content was amazing, and it's even a Dreamcast game? Insane! The music felt a bit repetitive, and the font was indeed a bit hard to read, but other than that, incredible entry! Probably my favorite thus far. |
| Jan 12 19:36:15 | 21h 15m | Radiance | ♥ 3 | Nice game! The graphics were awesome, and alongside the audio created an amazing mood! I especially liked the voice acting, really nailed down the feeling of the game. It started a bit slow and was generally pretty simple, but otherwise, great entry! |
| Jan 12 19:53:37 | 17m 22s | Lil Death | ♥ 2 | Really nice game! I loved the Vaulting Gasp Attack, it was very satisfying! The graphics were pretty nice too. As someone without a controller, it was a bit hard for me - I find that adding a way to aim with the mouse instead of the arrow keys really helps in these sort of games, although I understand that you designed it around a controller. Also, it took me a long while to realize that I could aim the Vaulting Gasp Attack - perhaps showing a cross-hair or something in the direction would help? Still, I managed to get a score of 14/6/1225 (in @fabdynamic's format) in the end! Overall, great entry! |
| Jan 12 20:01:39 | 8m 02s | Let's get this bread | ♥ 1 | Really nice game! The graphics were very good, especially for a custom engine! I also enjoyed the falling water and saltynator, and all the breads at the end. It would've been nice to have a full-screen option, but other than that, great entry! |
| Jan 26 20:04:48 | 336h 03m | Gene Graph Garden | ♥ 1 | Amazing game! I loved the mechanic - I never thought graphs could be this fun :) The levels were really good too - I spent over an hour playing this game, and eventually managed to beat it! It took me a long time to realize I had to generate a new fruit every cycle (I failed a lot when I just spawned everything with a fruit and didn't know why), but other than that, incredible entry! One minor thing regarding level 6 - maybe I'm just stupid, but while I managed to find a (relatively) nice solution for 110 fruit, getting that last 1 was really annoying, and basically required me to add a special case for the last stretch, nearly doubling the amount of genes required (I've attached both solutions below). Again, maybe it's just me missing the obvious simple solution, but it felt a bit disheartening that my original algorithm which I spent time perfecting didn't work just because of that 1 missing fruit...
