| Oct 4 23:27:11 | Uranium-236 | ♥ 1 | All right, I'm pretty new to reviewing, so lets give this a try (also, excuse me if anything I say sounds dumb or wrong for that reason). I decided I wouldn't post a review until I managed to break 4 billion kilowatt hours, and then managed to break 7 somehow! So here goes. This one takes a little getting used to. You learn pretty quickly that you have to be gentle with your mouse movements or you'll get overwhelmed immediately. But hey, it fits the theme perfectly, and it's pretty fun to master. It really feels like an unstable device that will go haywire if mistreated even slightly. Perfectly intense and forces you to concentrate; just the way I like it. For innovation. Well I suppose bouncing coloured shapes around is nothing new if you want to be really strict, but I can't say I've ever heard of any other game that's focused on maintaining a reactor core. For sound, I guess a more dramatic explosion when the core overheats wouldn't go amiss, but then again it might be jarring compared to the other sounds. Speaking of, they all fit well, and don't get irritating, which is always good. As for humour and mood; I don't really know what to put here? Outside of fast epic fails I didn't really find myself laughing and I didn't really feel any emotion besides intensity. So, 2.5? Overall, a game well worth the time invested in it. | |
| Oct 5 01:07:21 | 1h 40m | Last Bargain | ♥ 4 | Okay, fair warning to others, this is not a game for the impatient. This is very much a game about slow careful thought, and it's safe to assume that's intention here. Trying to rush will get you killed! For me at least though, mastering this game was a fun journey. You ever realise you're going to crash and clench as you desperately avoid a hazard, either through braking or desperate steering? Yeah, that happens a lot in this game. Made all the more intense by the fact you have to start from square one if you mess up. Also, this game has wonderful pixel art and the music combined with the dialogue creates a very nice atmosphere, of a bleak future place for cargo haulers. 5 stars for graphics and audio there. |
| Oct 5 01:20:19 | 12m 58s | Dude Hardcore | ♥ 2 | Heh! That was awesome! I mean, if my first thought on beating it is that I wanna play it again, you probably have something very special here. Those anomalies certainly make this feel more unique. It was fun to experiment them to see what they do. |
| Oct 5 03:28:34 | 2h 08m | Deck O' Discord | ♥ 5 | First off, I love the dithering work you guys did here. It's not a style I've ever used myself, so i imagine it's very easy to get it wrong. Props to you. Unfortunately this one didn't grab me at first. There's not much of a threat of failure here, and being docked points for using card monte too many times wasn't very obvious or meaningful to me. Honestly the card monte is probably the most engaging part of the game. Once I read the invitation to share times though, that was the kick I needed to have much more fun with the game.45sec.png, hardmode speed.png Here are my best times after a few playthroughs of each difficulty. |
| Oct 5 04:24:17 | 55m 43s | Castle of Chaos | ♥ 1 | Y'know, it's a rare thing to say the voice acting is one of the best things about a game. But it definitely makes this one stand out, and it just wouldn't be the same without it. That's not to say the other aspects aren't good of course. The controls and aesthetics are lovely, and the effects kept me guessing. It managed to pull out a few new ones just when I thought I'd seen them all. I have to admit though, I got shamefully annoyed at some points. The beginning of the final segment in particular gave me a lot of trouble. I'm also kind of disappointed we didn't get a return of the dark lord at the end to chide me out for actually stealing his token. But for a game jam, you kind of have to expect that. Overall though, it was a positive experience. Well done. |
| Oct 5 05:13:57 | 49m 40s | Unstable Mechanical Warframe | ♥ 1 | Let me start by saying I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. My first impression was let down a bit by the first level being a stumbling block. I'd recommend a bit more starting gene for that (then again, figuring this out is a good puzzle, so maybe it's best left alone or put later in the game.). Level 2 onwards, my strategy was pretty much the same; spawn a handful the 4th card tanks, then once they start getting close to danger, spawn the level one drones to draw away the turrets firepower so the tanks can destroy the turrets. Maybe that's a bit cheap of me, but I think that's the nature of strategy games, to figure out a strategy, as it were. It wasn't until the last few levels that I really made use of the right mouse button. I tried it in the first few levels and it didn't seem to work. What I had to learn was that all minions head towards it, and it goes away as soon as any of them touch it. Using this, I was able to give the slow tanks a much better route to attack by, and then swarm the drones as normal. So yeah, give this a bit of polish and you might really have something good here. |
| Oct 5 05:46:34 | 32m 37s | Pinfall | ♥ 2 | Little did I know, the unstable one was ME! Sadly, I'll need some time to cool off before I replay this for a better time, as finishing at all made me feel pretty legendary. That said, the aesthetics here are awesome, and the music kept me from raging too much. while I'm at it, props for having boosters down lanes that lead back to the start, so hitting them isn't as painful. Overall of course, any criticism I might level at this game would have to be balanced by "What do you expect? It's pinball!", and you captured the charm of pinball very well. pinfall time & score.png For what it's worth, here's what I finished on. |
| Oct 5 06:13:35 | 27m 01s | Could You Sit Still For Five Seconds? | ♥ 1 | What a nice simple game. Very easy to figure out, and a concept I don't think I've heard before. Unfortunately I find the controls lack feedback a little, like it feels uncertain if they're working or not. Also, I might be having some technical difficulties, but there seems to be no sound. If that's intended then I think some cute woofs and yaps wouldn't go amiss. But I suppose making doggy sounds on your own is easier said than done. Overall, a very good effort for your first game maker game. I managed a score of 147 with some practice. I'm curious as to how the scoring system works now, and just what the perfect score is. My guess is somewhere like 200. |
| Oct 5 07:15:10 | 1h 01m | Heavy Duty | ♥ 0 | It's probably a good sign when your first thought on finishing a game is wishing there was more of it. Let's see, lovely pixel art to start with, it's varied enough to make the environment interesting. Shame about the sounds in the jam release as their presence really is missed (I played both versions). I also found the controls to be very tight and responsive. Though I played on gamepad first, the keyboard controls ultimately didn't give me any real trouble. One little change I'd suggest is making the boxes shake the ground on impact, but I guess that's one of the things that had to get left on the cutting room floor. But yeah, overall, and excellent game here. |
| Oct 5 07:39:10 | 24m 00s | Unstable Potion | ♥ 1 | I was a little down on this game at first. Having all the enemies be green spheres and a gun that barely makes noise left a kinda bad first impression. It took me a little while to truly understand how potion mixing worked, and until then I got my pounded pretty mercilessly. That said, once I really started getting the hang of the potions and using them I was really enjoying myself. To the point I declared I would strive to break 1000 points. Well, here I am at 3360 points. I think the potion mixing is the real core of the game, because there's so many little ways you can mess them up, but it makes mastering them all the more satisfying. So yeah, this is a pretty fun game. |
| Oct 8 06:31:35 | 70h 52m | Nuclear Guy | ♥ 1 | I think you have a proof-of-concept for a pretty fun puzzle platform game here. Collecting uranium bars in order to jump high enough to reach more bars is much more interesting than the keys you'd use in most games like this. Unfortunately, I can confirm some of the things Nick-shooter said are true. Arrow key controls instead of WASD. While my first playthrough of the game had no real glitches, i managed to trigger the falling through floor glitch on subsequent plays. I attempted to glitch hunt this, and while I didn't manage to get it consistently, I did manage to trigger it while weirdly moving into a slope on level 2. Other than that, I didn't get error messages or manage to hit the exit unintentionally. There's also no sound. Is this intentional? But yeah, you could make something pretty good from this. |
| Oct 8 07:31:12 | 59m 37s | Gunstable | ♥ 2 | I like the thought that's gone into the weapons here. They're all varied, and none of them are useless, so it's fun to try out all sorts of different combinations to see what works. Plus, it's also fun to manage that many resources at once. I would say that a top priority for additions would be new types of enemies. As it is it's way to easy to kite them indefinitely. Speaking of enemies, somehow I got to 1307 points and they stopped spawning. I love the spaghetti western theming we have going on here! |
| Oct 11 19:26:03 | 83h 54m | Jump Goat | ♥ 0 | It's always nice to have a simple game that's easy to just pick up and play. It is kind of sad that the game eventually becomes impossible to play any further once you get to between 7-8 thousand points. If I were to experiment with this game, once thing I'd like to try is giving the player an option to charge a superjump, while slightly randomising the time platforms take to disintegrate. Give players a reason to tempt fate by staying on unstable platforms, y'know? Regardless, you have something with a lot of potential here. Nicely done. |
| Oct 11 19:39:01 | 12m 58s | the adventures of catboy in blobtopia | ♥ 0 | Wow, instant 5 stars for comedy, got a great laugh out of me and put me in a good mood. |
| Oct 13 19:48:08 | 48h 09m | Apollo's Lab | ♥ 2 | The art on display here, as well as the character designs, and the premise all give this game a lot of charm. It's probably what makes it all the more jarring the first time you spawn from the back of a mutant hot dog. On that topic, I think the big problem with figuring out the dart gun is that it's not intuitive. The music changes pace and gets distorted, but I assumed that was as a result of making the dogger high and harmless. So the music was giving you a cue as to your period of safety for running past him. Y'know, it seems to be a tranquilisier gun, and not a teleportation device. Once I figured out that if you die you respawn from their bodies instead of the trash (nice work making the character a raccoon for this, lol.) the rest of the game is pretty well designed. The first time you see an electric hotdog comes to mind so that players understand that these are periodic hazards, then following up with sequences where you need to avoid them. Placing the jetpack right next to a place you need to use it. Thankfully, I didn't manage to trigger any glitches. So aside from figuring out the dart gun, there's a good game here. |
| Oct 14 08:23:07 | 12h 34m | Normal Human | ♥ 2 | I'd like to begin by saying that the art style and the premise give this game a lot of charm from the outset. not only that, but this is a pretty unique take on dialogue for games in general! Something well worth patting yourself on the back for, I think. Naturally borking your phrases gets a few good laughs out of me. |
