Aug 2 11:04:29 ROOP (Running Out Of Power) ♥ 1 My score: 11400 Well done, the gameplay doesn't stray too far from the classic Asteroid genre, but making us be extra careful with "fuel" management is an interesting twist. It's hard to figure out whether it's worth it to go out of our way to catch fuel cells (it can quickly cost >20 to go catch one), so it takes a few replays to really learn the right tactics. All in all the game works well, has above average graphics, and all it really lacks in the end is some music. Congrats for your first LD game!
Aug 2 11:19:02 14m 33s The Last Light ♥ 1 Yay this is a Fantasy Fireworks Simulator! It was a fun entry to play, the idea is simple but I kept playing, I enjoyed exploding those monsters with my arrows hehe. Props for the efforts you put into graphics and lighting, and of course the funny foley work you did yourself haha Like others already said, the main improvements the game could use would be: * Either a way to win the game or having the difficulty ramp up more quickly (the uber waves were fun but not enough to put me in real difficulty) ; * Some music for the background. * The main character physics are a bit strange (huge jumps!) I also like the use you made of the theme, and how you painted an intriguing fantasy story in just a couple sentences. Nice job!
Aug 2 11:41:55 22m 53s Scrapjunk Couriers ♥ 2 5mn 30s! Excellent simplification of the FTL gameplay, I really loved playing it. While it's not clearly stated how rooms work, trial & error works well for figuring things out, so I would not consider it an issue. The net weapon is a really weird weapon for a spaceship, but in terms of gameplay it's super clever, so nice job. I would have loved to see what you could come up with for the other rooms, but for an LD entry it's already interesting enough to play, and balanced enough to make it really fun. So yeah, great mechanics and great balancing for a truly original take on the spaceship management genre. Too bad you could not submit it for the compo! I'm sure you'd have gotten super high rankings as a compo entry.
Aug 3 18:56:17 31h 14m Grid Connect ♥ 1 A very interesting game, with an original idea. It was very straightforward to understand and fun to play. I like how the core mechanic yields interesting choices, like "is it worth it to power that dot with only 20% left? It would block my wires for ages!" Also the minimalist style really fits the game. With a few improvements this could easily become a cool mobile game to pass the time, the controls being very touch-friendly. My suggestions are: * Replace the power percentage with a gauge that empties/resplenishes, that would make the board more readable at a glance. * I felt the difficulty ramped up too slowly. Also the Large board seems to make things artificially difficult, I felt the small & medium boards were more interesting. * There's a way to win actually! Too bad the game is not aware of that: https://static.ldjam.com/raw/a8/z/88b4.png But good job overall, I'm sure there's a lot of interesting mechanics you could add on top of this to make it a varied and replayable mobile game!
Aug 5 10:41:17 39h 45m Mothership ♥ 0 Very impressive entry, in a genre I've rarely seen on Ludum Dare and never seen in a so polished implementation! This is quite an achievement. The gameplay is pretty cool, ambitious and polished (fleet movement, etc.), but what takes the cake is the graphical aspect of the game: the 3D models, lighting, the FX (missile art & trajectories etc.) and overall cohesion/sense of detail only calls for respect :O While this is a really great LD entry I did found some things that could use improvement: * I don't seem to be able to select more than 9 units at the same time. For a game that ends up with 100+ units on the screen that's a bit frustrating. Yeah there's the control group mechanic to compensate, but it's just not as fun as simply grabbing 50 units and go swarm a pack of enemies. * That's a more minor thing but it would have been fun if the level had more variety, and maybe a boss at the end. Here the difficulty feels constant, thus the game linear & slightly repetitive. Maybe the time spent on the control group system could have been replaced with more level design. But honestly I'm not criticizing, what you managed to release is already pretty high to LD standards. As a final advice, I'd suggest you simply remove the Web version and just leave the Windows one: the latter parts of the level, where there's a lot of units, start to make the game very laggy & eventually barely playable, even on decent computers. It just doesn't do justice to the game!
Aug 5 16:51:39 6h 10m Soul Gun ♥ 3 A very promosing game with a great atmosphere, but it was too hard for me. Maybe I was not it the right mood for playing the game but I didn't go far, ragequitting after dying between 20 & 30 times at that point: HARD.png I really like the idea of merging VVVVVV with classic platformer shooting, but the unforgiving hitboxes (especially on the violet blob shooting blue circles) and the super-hard part above made me give up. I did finish VVVVVV & Super Meat Boy back in the day, I guess I just lost my mojo since :P
Aug 10 11:21:14 114h 29m #relicsofpast ♥ 0 I reached level 12! There is indeed a strange paradox in that the art is cool, but we all end up playing with the lights out 100% of the time so we don't completely get to enjoy it! Otherwise the platforming works well, and I'm impressed with the level generation that yielded sometimes hard but never impossible jumps. Now other than jumping and collecting life here and there it doesn't seem like the gameplay is really complete ; for now it's just basic platforming. Maybe there's an interesting use of the light to find (like having some platforms only there when the lights are on/off), but for now it does lack depth. The art & music are really good though so you have a great start to turn it into a deeper and more replayable game through more contents & mechanics!
Aug 11 14:42:53 27h 21m SteamBot ♥ 3 I would not exactly call that a fast-paced game, but it's still cool enough! The difficulty doesn't seem to increase too much (though maybe the creatures are attacking faster with time? I'm not sure),I managed to reach 10000 before stopping because of the repetitiveness. I was a bit suprised at the beginning by the instant Game Over when touching a barrel (I thought they were part of the background since shooting at them did nothing). But once I got it the game was intuitive enough to play. Maybe it could have been fun to make them explode and kill the player if we accidentally shoot them :D The graphics are good, the audio sounds awesome at first but quickly becomes repetitive. All in all it's a decent game, that could use some more variety and challenge in the gameplay to become even better!
Aug 11 15:04:03 21m 10s Runnerbot LD39Entry ♥ 1 Very fun game, I pushed up to 30000+ with 4 lives remaining :) The high points of this game are its art and especially its level generation, which is varied and interesting enough to never feel like we're going twice through the same place. The enemies are mostly interesting, especially the arachnid which is actually frightening :O The main improvements I could see would be: - to make the difficulty ramp up more with time - to turn the stun remote into something that shoots forward, rather than around us. Or maybe making it instantaneous rather than a slowly expanding curcle. In the current state, given the fast pace of the movement I found the remote to be not too useful. Overall it's a super fun arcade same so congrats! (NB. I only played the original Jam version)
Aug 11 15:13:04 9m 01s POWER TRANSFORMER ♥ 0 So, restoring a windmill = hitting it hard? Haha I didn't get how the story matched the gameplay exactly (maybe the power of entropy?) I guess the score increases the more you shoot windmill pictures. Things didn't make too much sense to me, but I kept playing with the toy until the end of the 2 min limit. Maybe a countdown would have fit better to make things a *little bit* less obscure. Overall the game seems unfinished, but hopefully you had fun making it! Keep jamming!
Aug 18 14:29:38 167h 16m The P.U.R.G.E. Protocol ♥ 1 Brilliant entry, the storytelling is minimal yet very clever. During my first playthrough, because I'm an evil player I chose invalid answers on purpose, just to see what would happen... Well I wasn't disappointed. Seeing the first body through the window is pretty shocking as well, congrats for the twists :) My main nitpicks about the game would be: - The choice of questions (how come one's pop culture references make him a man worthy of being saved? haha) - The happy ending, which even had the same gas as the sad one. I'm not entirely convinced ARES did not kill me despite my right answers... I understand that might be a running-out-of-time issue. - Having at least some ambient noise for audio, optionally with beeps here and there would definitely have helped set the mood Other than that it's a pretty original and impressive compo entry, definitely my type of game :) EDIT: Since you've mentioned it in your postmortem, I did realize the lights got turned back on around the end. It took me a couple seconds to understand what happened but it was clear enough.
Aug 18 15:02:08 32m 30s Exocharge Infinite ♥ 2 Phew that last level was difficult. I almost gave up but I eventually did it :) Solid controls & shooting, fitting graphics & audio, great sense of detail, good level design & a staggering amount of action for an LD jam entry make this a really top tier game. My main suggestion would be to have the camera zoom out a bit, because it can get frustrating, especially in the last level. Like some others I agree that with more contents and better difficulty management this could definitely be turned into a paid indie game. Congrats!
Aug 18 15:13:17 11m 09s Quoala ♥ 1 Great writing & great graphics for a truly innovative game! I wish there were more experimental things like this on LD. I had no idea how the game would play until the intro finished, this little suspense in itself was already cool. I really like how the wife just speaks really like a normal human would, which is a nice change from a lot of interactive stories (well, apart maybe from the Indiana Jones reference ;P). My first thought when the GPS went all weird was that I got hacked and nothing good would happen if I followed its direction, it's cool to see common sense worked. I unlocked all endings out of curiosity, it gets a bit crazy at times (alternative Terminator origin story anyone?) but it was fun dicovering them all!
Aug 18 15:23:39 10m 22s THE RISING OF THE MACHINES ♥ 1 10 levels, 2 different boss fights and 2 cutscenes, that's impressive amount of content! The gameplay started to feel repetitive towards the end, but overall it was pretty fun. The cool voiceover made up for the repetitive music :)
Aug 18 15:55:28 31m 49s Tank Battle ! ♥ 1 An ambitious game that promises a lot with its cool graphics & UI reminiscent of PSX/early PS2 games (for some reason it reminds me of Star Wars Racer & Battlefront II in particular). Unfortunately the game is not really playable, as the tanks are very bumpy, the controls frustrating and the enemies very hard to locate unless... they're shooting at you. In a couple occasions I died within a second of spawning. I only killed one enemy throughout all my ~10 attempts. Too bad you lost so much time with the the procedural tanks, if the game was more balanced it could have been great. But hey working on procedural tank generation must have been a cool exercise, and that's also what LD is for - experimenting. We don't succeed every time!
Aug 18 16:15:48 20m 20s POWER ♥ 1 Great work on making the game juicy as it needs to be: shooting is pretty satisfying and the action turns into real fireworks in the latter levels. I'm impressed by the amount of power ups you added, but the mechanic I found most interesting was the "power cloud" mechanic, that helped make the levels switch between making you rush through the enemies, to instead go slow to recharge your batteries, or to simply go slow because you have to destroy that swarm of monsters to loot energy. Overall the game is well balanced, the only really challenging one being the level 13. I planned to comment on the pretty pixel art and how I'm sad it's not super consistent with the UI etc. but it seems like some of the assets are not yours so I can totally understand.
Aug 18 16:38:34 22m 46s Power Synergy ♥ 1 A very interesting game that unfortunately lacks balancing and polish to make it really enjoyable - at least to me. While the gameplay idea is very interesting (both the parts about gathering energy strategically and the poker-like energy bet), I found a lot of things unclear which refrained me from making the right decisions: * I didn't get until my 5th fight or so, and after trying a lot of different things (clicking/dragging stuff around) that I actually had to *type* in the power box (the game being mouse-only up to now, that was unexpected). I think I lost quite some soldiers because of that * I wasn't sure how much energy was gained with every capsule, and I wasn't sure during/after a fight how many energy each enemy spent nor actually who won, depending on the camera position. - I got a Defeat screen totally unexpectedly: the enemy only had 4 power left, while I had around 500. I sent most of my units for a fight, gave 5 units of power to each of them... And lost the game. Some units were actually sent to gather power, so I'm sure not all of them died. That last part nailed the coffin and just made me think "apparently I didn't get the rules at all", which is quite frustrating after spending 5 to 10mn moving units around. I also have the same issue as others regarding the slow start: having much less space and robots would have made the game just as fun. Great game idea, too bad the execution left to desire!
