LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

A Day in the Antarctica by Khud0 2018-12-27T17:28:26Z

Positives - A very interesting atmosphere made eerie by a fitting (and dark) concept - I really liked the trailing effect. It makes it seem like the penguin is really cold, as if every move is precious and as if it's so cold you can see mirage images. On the other hand, I would have liked maybe it used solely for a speed up, perhaps? - The music and sfx were really good and set the scene right - Good speed, good map. As I said, could have additional speed somehow and/or higher jumps.

Improvements - Don't have to keep reading the same message every restart (or remain immobile) - Difficult to hit 3rd arrow as camera moves too fast - Fire's hitbox seems inaccurate - Should be able to catch penguin mid-air (seems like this does work sometimes, I think) - Small penguin seems to have had disappeared at one point and was reset to its original location (just a bit weird) - Shooting the penguin seems a bit inaccurate (as if the trajectory is a bit lower than where I click)

Overall, I think the game has some great ideas and the aesthetic is pretty much on-point. I think it does get a bit repetitive though, and quickly at that. I think what this needs is a little polishing and extra mechanics. It also would benefit from a more streamlined direction to the "goal". I assume either there was a way out, or maybe making the fire big enough set some kind of new way alight or granted a power boost, but I didn't test that far - one reason being the difficulty to shoot penguins; though, maybe that is representative of the harsh nature of sacrifice.

Yeah, well done for pulling this off!

Great job, keep it up :v:

Miserable Morene and the Raiders of the Gold Blum by Izunah 2018-12-29T21:34:08Z

Positives - Score is really clear - Decent "level" texture - Nice menu design, and peculiarly interesting audio volume options - Simple mechanics that take a simple concept quite far. Very good idea. - Nice chaining idea - Music is aptly fast-paced but quickly gets too repetitive

Improvements - A bit difficult to read instructions - Right-click on my touchpad is not working - Music didn't actually loop? - Sometimes difficult to read chaining text.

Overall - A very good idea and I think you pulled it off well. I think this game can do with a little bit more variety, and, of course, right-click working on touchpads. - Quite funny, actually.

Great stuff, keep it up!

Useful Corpses by ryjcio 2018-12-27T18:28:56Z

Positives - Rain and dark atmosphere is stunning - When that guy fell and made that noise, that was hilarious - Great difficulty transitioning - Game is fun to play and not too repetitive - Decent texture usage - Nice blood effect of recent corpse - Good to mix it up with guns

Improvements - Would like to know which level I'm on - Rain audio could last longer or loop better - Could be some aesthetic lightning effects. Maybe even could blind the player partially or kill him - Game froze on me when I got shot, at corpse count 109 in a mixed level

Overall - This game contains an illustration of dark humour accompanying sacrifice. You have made it quite "realistic" in that regard. The mood is heightened by the blood going out of the corpse and this makes it engaging. Put that together with the rain and it has great aesthetic. - I think it is fun and not too repetitive, although it did seem a bit monotonous sometimes when I died too much - but that's the fun of it, in a way. - I think the texture could be a little varied but it was pretty good.

Well done and keep it up! :D

MARATAKA by Vodzik 2018-12-27T19:47:43Z

Positives - I like the open world style and the game seems fairly simple - The volcano is a great idea and the fireworks-style aesthetic is great - I liked the super jump off the volcano. I don't think that was intended, it's more a glitch but it's cool even though it's useless unless it's intended to help throw items - Good elements such as water, civilians, huts, falling - Great mood and prehistoric atmosphere

Improvements - Picking up items is really choppy and difficult - Dropping items is very annoying or seeing them get stuck - Timer feels too quick - I was going to try and get 5 "Human parts" in but it's quite difficult - Moving around at the same time as moving view is choppy and ineffective

Overall - Overall, it's a pretty good concept and you've applied it well to the theme of sacrifice. I like how there are multiple different endings. There could be a little more variety e.g. more puzzles, NPCs actually having a purpose e.g. can speak to them or they can give thoughts and suggestions. Great prehistoric atmosphere. I can see how you could have multiple levels with different centralised environments.

Good stuff and keep it up! :)

Positives - Very smooth in-game camera controls - well done! Could possibly have sensitivity setting - Awesome torch visual effects - Clear instructions e.g. by the priest - Nice world and houses - Nice Dungeon idea but maybe the name is not representative? - Quite funny, at times with link to theme - Great change of sceneries and ideas for objectives

Improvements - When I fell too far in dungeon, it would be preferable to have had restarted automatically, right? There could be a menu option. - out-game camera controls a bit weird - Could have some sound and ambient music - Would have liked a more fluid jump - When the guy exclaimed that the wall looked different, it didn't look very different to me - Left-click didn't work on touch pad

Overall - Overall seems like a great attempt at an open-world game. Some more fluid dynamics, a little polishing and audio would help this game out a lot.

Great stuff, keep it up!

@lilkrit Ahh, that's interesting. (That's useful knowledge, well, if I had a mouse haha). But, the mere fact that you do have 4 different types shows how much effort you've put in, and for that, I commend you. Nicely done :v:

Wolf Trouble by Bonelazy 2018-12-29T22:07:05Z

Positives - Nice switch to night - It feels like a good challenge as you get used to the game - Dogs going away is an interesting mechanic and almost "realistic". Quite a good idea. Some dogs not going away until they've had their "share", is also interesting. - Excellent choice of ambient environmental sounds to go with the night but sounds a bit unnaturally repetitive. - Good idea to have regenerative items to buy in shop. Steak probably too expensive. - Great simple idea and good concept - Nice choice of environment - quite "western" style - Good SFX

Improvements - Some sheep die too quickly, could act as fodder for next round if they only take some damage - Game does get progressively quite difficult - maybe should have auto-reload? - Should have a restart option or menu option - When moving would be better if character faced direction of line of fire - Maybe a skill boost or "perk" where you improve aiming speed - Should be able to throw a sheep back inside - A sheep died even though it did not get hurt - Sometimes gun is inaccurate even though directly on target. Whilst possibly somewhat realistic, that can be a little annoying

Overall - Seems like a pretty good game to me. Whilst somewhat innovate and different by virtue of the theme and theme of the actual environments, this game could probably benefit from some more variety e.g. mechanics and items. - Overall, enjoyable and quite accurate game mechanics. Good vibes.

Great stuff, keep it up!

@kiv Hey Kiv! Thanks for your comment. Did you know that you can also sacrifice your partner's abilities? That way, you get to retain yours? Some may say that's quite cruel, but hey, a the reaper had a demand... and he was determined to face death 'til the end - your character's death, that is.

Internal Affairs by AMastryukov 2018-12-27T19:12:10Z

Positives - An interesting concept of sacrifice and tied quite nicely to the "plot". - Great narratives! - Music does fit well, but I did have another point on this below.

Improvements - After a couple of attempts, that music was like needles in my ear. Great thing you had the option to turn it off. - Not intuitive enough - Quite difficult. No set objective other than how long can you wait - though that's understandable given that, presumably, you would try to represent a war-scenario - Didn't feel very "engaging", not enough feedback and signals

Overall - Great try at something which is a little different from the norm. I would say this game can work on its interactivity, and if it had another dimension that would be fantastic such as characters, maybe, actually having character? That way it would feel even worse to sacrifice them. Currently, it's just abstractly numbers and that can be quite boring. - But good effort, great humour, narrative and pictures e.g. background.

Well done and keep it up!

Pyres by flynn 2018-12-27T18:07:19Z

Positives - Great music - Interesting map - Blood effect is interesting - Like the aesthetic background changes and "messages" - Good speed mechanic. Not sure why you'd want to slow down in this game. But the bar is not very intuitive

Improvements - Map overview is very strange way to play. Normally in games you enter places from the map e.g. maybe something akin to fire emblem - Difficult to read all text. Could have different font and also wrap around in black. - Non-engaging battle system. Not much to do other than wait. - Little point in defence and retreat - Too easy

Overall - In terms of sacrifice, it doesn't really seem like this element is here other than it obviously being about war. Overall, a great mix of music, and medieval overtones have really set a great atmosphere to the game and it does feel "bloody". - At the end of the game there is no feeling of winning or wanting to play again. You could have some sample scores to beat or something. - There is a sense of accomplishment when cities are captured. But the battle system within this conquest could be improved. I think that's a major area of focus.

Overall, interesting stuff and keep it up! :)

CaveSlime by YiNian 2018-12-29T23:37:50Z

Positives - Excellent textures and graphics - Nice, empowering slime face. Almost smug ;) - Nice and fast auto-restart upon death - Cool SFX for companion call, and interesting face - I like how the blue slime just slumps when not being controlled and falls off a slime - I like how slimes can stay in the air, though that is a bit gravity-defying - Easy to get a hang of the game, though the controls are a bit weird - Great use of checkpoints - Very fun and great variety of puzzles

Improvements - Camera a little jittery sometimes when jumping - Could have lava sfx or slime animation when burned - Switching back to blue slime is non-intuitive (not obvious) - Companion call should be in direction of slime - There's an infinite restart bug that sometimes happens. - No way to restart or menu? - I found a way to infinite double-jump. That's funny, I guess. - I went out of bounds. - Could have had some music or extra sound effects e.g. as spiky thing got closer to character sound increased

Overall - An excellent game, that the more I played the easier it got. It is indeed quite tactical and takes on board the theme of sacrifice very well. As a platformer, contrary to the slimy nature of the characters, it is actually very sharp and seemingly well-polished.

Excellent work, and keep it up!

CaveSlime by YiNian 2018-12-31T18:20:57Z

@yinian Yo! Basically, there were a couple of ways and you can experiment but I'll list two.

1. If you build up a stack of green slimes, and then keep jumping with the blue slime by touching them, you can jump reeeeaaallly high (although sometimes you get forcefully pushed back somehow in the air), so that's not too bad. 2. This one is not that easy to reproduce. I tried some combination of repeatedly pressing K-L-J and I was able to repeatedly jump - I think the game mixed the green slime's jump for the blue one so somehow I was keep jumping. That was actually very fun doing that ;)

PhotoSheep by JakNak72 2018-12-29T22:47:23Z

Positives - Excellent demonstration of thinking outside of the box here. - Great narrative and choices - Funny and dynamic storylines such as the dragon popping out of nowhere - I can see this as having potential as a full-fledged game

Improvements - Could have clearer instructions e.g. "view/File on Screen" was a bit weird. - Could have instructions to reset game (although in defence, if someone did get to that stage, it was fairly intuitive) - Could have had a longer storyline

Overall - This has a lot of potential, and of course you used something new so there's not much to criticise here apart from stating the obvious such as audio, graphics, mechanics etc. - Overall, great game and very funny, but could have been longer.

Great stuff, keep it up!
