Aww I didn't manage to finish it, was playing for a couple of minutes when I clipped into a corner and got stuck :frowning2: Oh well maybe it's for the better, I felt like a monster while playing

khud0 2018-12-05 13:40

@sodaro New newspaper headline: "A serial murderer stopped the streak because he got stuck in the wall"

Nice entry! Throwing lil penguins is fun, considering the level layout while doing it is a nice idea and challenge too. But the arrows not actually representing the trajectory messes me up so badly! Also the game has some bugs, which are rather crucial for a walkthrough - "kids" stuck in walls, disappear from hands. Never finished it, sadly, not even sure if it has some levels. Penguins being thrown sound fantastically, but the music is grim - it creates a dissonance. Maybe it would've been better if you choose some single mood for everything in the game. Still, for 48 hours it's pretty fun and engaging. Good job.

Cool game but a time or score in some way could have been cool

shubart 2018-12-26 21:16

Burning pingouins is a fun idea. It would be better if there was more campfire or pingouins were not near one another (you have to make lot of frustating displacement)

erkberg 2018-12-26 23:26

A pretty grim game, but also a good one. I enjoyed the visuals and audio, especially that blue follow effect is nice, but throwing penguin babies into a fire is just something I don't want to do for long (or at all, for that matter). Movement feels pretty good and throwing them around is actually quite fun, except for a little bit of frustration which comes from a perceived offset between the preview curve and the actual flight. Still, a decent game, good job!

Nice take on the theme. Pretty solid controls, I only had 1 bug with throwing the little penguins where one would get stuck in a wall. Also, since you did make the game in 48 hours you're still in the compo, but since you didn't make all the audio by yourself within the 48 hours I would opt-out of the audio portion of the compo. Maybe if you uploaded a version of it without the music your friend made you could stay opted-in for it. Cool game though, all things considered

Fun mechanics and a great concept. Found all the squeaks funny and had a great time playing it!

amastryukov 2018-12-27 16:51

**The Good:** Fits the theme. Artwork adds to the atmosphere. Well-executed dark humor concept. Controls are simple and straightforward.

**Needs Work:** No HUD - how many penguins are there on the level? How lit is the fire when I'm not in its range?

Personally, I wasn't a fan of the trailing effects - they seemed raw to me, but others liked it so it's not necessarily bad by design. Also a note - if you didn't make the music personally, you may want to either opt-out of that category or submit it for the jam.

I didn't make it through sadly, I managed to burn a few penguins but didn't get how to beat the game. The mechanics work ok otherwise. Nice motion blur on the player character.

zxinferno 2018-12-27 17:28

Positives - A very interesting atmosphere made eerie by a fitting (and dark) concept - I really liked the trailing effect. It makes it seem like the penguin is really cold, as if every move is precious and as if it's so cold you can see mirage images. On the other hand, I would have liked maybe it used solely for a speed up, perhaps? - The music and sfx were really good and set the scene right - Good speed, good map. As I said, could have additional speed somehow and/or higher jumps.

Improvements - Don't have to keep reading the same message every restart (or remain immobile) - Difficult to hit 3rd arrow as camera moves too fast - Fire's hitbox seems inaccurate - Should be able to catch penguin mid-air (seems like this does work sometimes, I think) - Small penguin seems to have had disappeared at one point and was reset to its original location (just a bit weird) - Shooting the penguin seems a bit inaccurate (as if the trajectory is a bit lower than where I click)

Overall, I think the game has some great ideas and the aesthetic is pretty much on-point. I think it does get a bit repetitive though, and quickly at that. I think what this needs is a little polishing and extra mechanics. It also would benefit from a more streamlined direction to the "goal". I assume either there was a way out, or maybe making the fire big enough set some kind of new way alight or granted a power boost, but I didn't test that far - one reason being the difficulty to shoot penguins; though, maybe that is representative of the harsh nature of sacrifice.

Yeah, well done for pulling this off!

Great job, keep it up :v:

I didn't play to the end, but still like it very cool entry. Impressive for a compo. Good platform feedbacks. Just need a bit of work in the level design, to make it less repetitive. Nice art for the background. Good job !

johnny-turbo 2018-12-28 00:01

Kinda messed up little game haha. But I thought it was pretty fun and silly. Would be nice to see a little more challenging platforming puzzles and such. But overall fun little game that looks and plays pretty well. Congratulations on making a complete game in 48 hours!

khud0 2018-12-28 20:58

Thank you all for playing the game! It's delightful to see your reviews ^^

@fledgeling93 The poor penguins don't understand, what is happening. I didn't have the time to unwrap the story and to make a proper ending, but the mood is intentional :)

@erkberg I thought that the offset would look more realistical, because you are throwing a penguin that is above your head. Also, it makes you have to adjust the throws instead of following the arrows. Seemed like a good idea to me at first :)

@cdunham The damn penguins would always get stuck in the walls, I couldn't find the reason at the time being.

@amastryukov At least having a Fireplace HUD would be great, indeed. Though I wanted to experiment a bit and leave this one hudless.

@zxinferno Thank you very much for such an in-depth comment! Many of the important pieces, such as text, menu, endings and camera following the mouse were added in the last ~2 hours before the compo deadline, so they are super raw and I didn't have time to fix anything. I was very upset with the creation because too many things are left out and too many things are super raw, though I am happy that I managed to make it work somehow! :)

phi 2018-12-28 21:22

Haha, nice! This reminds me a lot of those old yeti penguin flash games... I found the short jumping distance kind of annoying, but otherwise, the game looks and feels great!

Concerning the music: I don't think that's a huge problem, as long as you know better next time. ;) If you want to be fair, you could opt out of the audio category, but I get that you're proud of finishing it in 48 hours -- especially since it's so polished and well made! :)

Reminds me the years I play SuperTux at the beginning, but it is a very innovative game then! Great mechanics. Atmosphere is also great - I can feel the freezing winter. However, it is too difficult for me. Maybe making a smaller map could be much better.
