LD38 — A Small World

Teddy The Tardigrade by wujood 2017-05-07T22:53:12Z

I like growth games, but this game had few flaws. So let's get into bit of criticism:

If you don't check tutorial, you will end up dead (interesting, but misleading design choice of arrow pointing at enemy instead of food). Controls behave wierd (I suppose that collider is set exactly to barrier pixels, meaning when you hit for example pixelarty rock, you will get stuck on pixel edge and get slowed down). What I mean by this is that sometimes you are slow, sometimes fast. Also you can sometimes get lost (and even killed) because you can't see enough of space around you. The art style looks nice but bit inconsistent (varying sprite resolutions, mixing 3D and 2D [in main menu], main menu was not in the same style as the rest of the game).

Lastly I don't know if this is bug or not, but sometimes when I touched some not marked anemone, I got hurt. But still, nice entry.

LD39 — Running out of Power

Short Lived by Matt Fabius 2017-08-01T13:22:58Z

Cause I have no idea how to start a quality critique I'll dive right in.

The levels are the right size and winable so that's a plus, but also there was hardly any challange. Yes, there were two challanging levels - The third one (until I found out there was a battery) and the one with the pulsating blue to white spectre water?

Another good thing was the lil' tutorial at the start on movement.

Hovever this kinda gets me into some second problem, it felt like the FOV was too small to really have enough information where the batteries are. On third level I haven't noticed it and I spent around three minutes until I seen it in the full scene (I thought it was supposed to be challenging so I didn't look for it though).

Movement felt really not standart almost as if it isn't using the interpolation, but I think this is more about personal preference. Another thing to add is that if you press space at the start of the round it sometimes jumps if you press it too quickly and you'll lose some energy.

The dying seemed dealyed. Few times I have burned on one flame, walked a out and died (sometimes I walked free), but more importantly this was more problematic inside the spectral water or whatever that was. Sometimes I jumped out and haven't died and sometimes I have.

The whole mechanic of this water seemed wierd, mainly beacuse there was one whole level based around it and I had no idea how you should avoid dying. It took few tries.

I didn't really catch into the story, I have no idea why was this robot different, but hey, it doesn't matter.

The graphics are monotonous and sometimes things (the battery for example) blend with the reapeating background.

The levels have no standard platform height and it feels wierd, but again cannot blame for this one, it's thing of preference.

I got a little problem. The game crashes and I know why. Thankfully you have included source code, you parsed your doubles wrong, unfortunately you have to use: ``` double.Parse("3.5", CultureInfo.InvariantCulture); ``` If your player has other language which isn't using dots as decimal point, you will get format exception. But thanks to the sc I could at least try the game, but you should fix it asap.

Our Stories by ciderWrath 2017-08-01T14:03:23Z

I like choose you own adventure games and so It's a pitty that this one was short. And because I don't have too much to brag about. I will start with minuses.

The game's as I have already stated short, almost too short. You really have no way to feel her personality and therefor you cannot really drive your decisions. On the other hand these decisions are only about stories in your head. Which leads me to the second minus and that is that your decisions have no real ending consequnces. The last one is that there are some missing images which probably were not finished cause of the not enough time but still.

The graphics are really good and I really like it. Rating: O: 3

Mission Critical by Dast99 2017-08-03T08:16:18Z

I have (and I am starting to think that I am cursed or sth [3rd or 4th game in a row]) problem - I am stuck in the main menu. When I start the game I can click buttons but they do nothing and the menu with "are you sure you want to quit" is visible (yet buttons are not doing anything).

Adrift by Brendan Engelman 2017-08-03T07:58:38Z

Don't know why or what is wrong (I suppose some problem with resolution handling) but I was unable to get out of the main menu - I could't click anything.

Nice game I must say, I found all elements of rating real high. Only one thing irritated me - the sounds of steps. They were too loud a and sounded a bit like a gunshot.

LD42 — Running out of space

Shopper by catchthefloaty 2018-08-17T11:24:04Z

@mike-inprinciple: >One technical suggestion, avoid moving the character using the Transform. Move the character by applying velocity to the Rigidbody instead. This will allow you to avoid all of the clipping and flickering.

Either that or check for colliders on the new position before you actually change it.

Tomb Walker by herinque 2018-08-16T14:13:42Z

@antoined73 Yeah, the camera angle was last minute change, originally this was supposed to be a top down game.

Tomb Walker by herinque 2018-08-18T11:43:36Z

@realmar You see, when you press spacebar, number of available spacebar presses decreases. And since you can be exploring for a while you can run out of available spacebar presses. And the spacebar is also reffered to as a 'space' for short. Therefor you are technically running out of space.

Memory Leak by tritium 2018-08-17T15:28:43Z

The game is interesting and I think concept overall is good. The levels as mentioned by previous commenters are quite hard. But hard (or even hardcore) is fine. However this game combined with the difficulty has these really frustrating flaws: - There is no "get ready" screen - Many times you will be thrust into a level barging forward from the previous one resulting in a death (or a reset if you will), but most of the time this won't stop you immediately resulting in a one or two more falls before stopping to look around. - Since the timer is on from this vague level beginning you will have to suicide to get back the precious time you have lost being unprepared. - The camera resets with each level reset, this wouldn't be normally a problem but since the difficulty is high, you will get reset a lot. And now imagine you turn, jump and die, now, normally you expect your mouse to be at the same position as you died in, well not here. Now imagine dying on the same segment over and over again and turning around every time. It gets really frustrating really fast. - You do not move with moving platforms which makes them useless, it is really easy to fall from them and you will benefit much more from not using them and going your own way. This is however sometime not possible due to memory restrictions. - Since you die alot, the sound of death gets annoying really early in the gameplay.

LD44 — Your life is currency

Offworld Slaving Company by James Dunlap 2019-05-03T13:37:39Z

To start off with my little critique, I did not ejoy the game that much. While the concept is very interesting and fitting for the theme, the execution is not ideal. The gameplay has some core issues, first one being the enforcers. I do not know if this was just a poor design choise or if it was meant to be difficult, but the result is impossible to handle. While you do your thing outside of anyone's sights it allright, however once you get the spotted, you are done for. Now it is a little easier to shake enforcers off when you do not have your little slave around.

Which brings me to the first recommendation in case you ever return back to this project and decide to fully finish the game. The recommendation is - letting your slave go when you want, so you at least can lose your hunted or spotted status faster. Being hunted is very easy to achieve because enforcers look everywhere. Again if you decide to revise the game ever in the future, I would like to see some visual or musical representation of you being too close to bystander's/enforcfer's view.

The last cluster of issues is how the disguise system works (even though it all ties in with the enforcers). Even though the look of the alien with the disguise is hilarious. Either the hunted mechanics should be changed to the behaviour similar to the spotted. With the difference being that you cannot lose the hunted status until you change your clothes. The second connected change I propose is is slowing the police down. It is difficult to lose them when they run faster than you. Your only hope is to get them stuck on an object or to slow them down during diagonal movement (where the AI occasionally struggles). The other solution is to be able to change your appearence outside of the vessel. If not everywhere then at least in buildings. If you do it in the space ship, the enforces will get you most of the time.

The graphics could use a little imporvement as well, now the main focus of improvements should be variety. There were lots of tiles with the same texture and since the color pallete was fairly monotonous it can be eye straining at times.

The Gr8 Scamming Adventure by herinque 2019-05-01T19:51:34Z

@shadowhaxz0r Thanks. We wanted to include more scams and meachnics, however it proved to be really time consuming. We currently have two fully fledged ones with some different paths that differently affect your anger. Even though one scam is not as extensive as the other.

@james-dunlap There actually is a way to skip the dialog, just click twice on an option.

@keravcin, can you please follow up and explain this problem in greater detail so we can fix it. Some error logs/messages or even problem description would help.
