LD36 — Ancient Technology

OUTCAST by gassasin 2016-09-02T14:39:00

The cover art had me intrigued despite the mismatching pixel resolutions and style. It says "The application newproject can't be opened." on OSX

Controls could be improved by increasing the acceleration and friction, so you get a more tight control and slide less.

Couldn't run on mac because of missing jdk. I know it's lazy but I'm not gonna bother figuring out what's the right one to install. I think games need to be self contained as much as possible.

Thanks for all the criticism, feedback and bug reports! Uploaded a new build with lots of issues fixed. Not going to revise the footprint on the farms for this LD, but probably will do that if the game moves forward. Still one audio issue to fix, when too many sfx play at the same time.

Type text symbols until it looks correct! That's how I do it.

Fallen into time by MaximumIllusion 2016-08-31T03:50:00

The premise and atmosphere are interesting, but it has many problems. I'd say the most evident is the level design, in the beginning i'm lost, had to restart the app to see what the "intended" general direction was supposed to be. There are objects you can walk through even though it's obvious you should collide with them, and that is so easy to fix in Unity. After going into the portal there is an area where you can see a pick-axe but you can't grab it... don't give the player something to do but not let them do it. Design 101. At the parkour part I'm like "ok, this sucks with the keyboard" but the gamepad support is incomplete and unplayable. At that point I just gave up. As a prototype this is interesting but it's too far from a playable experience.

Ancient Factory City by StMatn 2016-09-02T14:32:00

I'm always intrigued by these state machine games, such as infinifactory, but they take a long time to build unless you go for something really simple.

Golem by Yazara 2016-09-02T13:52:00

The concept is interesting and I was able to understand how to play without any instructions. That said, It's difficult to predict what the algorithm will do. It's a lot more trial and error and random outcome than I would expect for something that is a logical puzzle, those two dynamics are not mixing well. This could be remedied by proper level design teaching each element but presenting challenges that can only be overcome by understanding the logical pieces, but that are not difficult enough as to be frustrating. This may be tough to achieve with the current design and I suggest revising. For example, if the execution was more linear, say it starts at the mid stone then moves to the next one, and the next one and when it reaches the end it simply restarts and does the same thing. Currently there is a sort of memory, which is cool from a technical point of view, but hard to predict when there are multiple directions involved. You could preserve the memory idea with a dedicated memory stone that bifurcates the logic. There is an annoying bug, on the right side where I see the golems they are not matching up to the grid. This could be a difference between your aspect ratio and that of other people. Try different aspect ratios in the editor and see if you can reproduce the issue. Cheers.

Touch the Monolith by silkworm_sweatshop 2016-09-04T06:30:00

Excellent design. Really enjoyed the narrative and the puzzles, except for the spear. I kept trying to attach the stone to the end of the spear, but that doesn't work, I have to attach it to the middle, which doesn't make sense.

Back to Nature by QuestionableQuality 2016-09-02T14:26:00

Cool atmosphere but main points of improvement would be the mouse interaction with characters which is hit-miss, or the feedback is insufficient. For example when I send them to water, I'm not sure if it worked or not. Character animations could be improved, they slip and slide, again impacting the communication of what happened.

The House on the Right by WERT Studio 2016-09-02T14:42:00

Can't seem to open on OSX El Capitan.

The Mighty Stick by mitya1234 2016-09-02T14:15:00

The tiny planet is a good idea but otherwise I don't know what I'm supposed to do despite the instructions written on the tablet. I pushed this gray cube towards the monolith and nothing happened. I got the stick, nothing happened.

Hero of Alexandria by Drury 2016-08-30T20:48:00

OMG had a lot of fun playing this game. While audio helps, it's better to have no audio, than bad audio. That's what I think. Interesting premise. Artwork needs to be made more consistent throughout. Controls are responsive, interaction of new weapons to enemies and new enemy formations throw interesting twists at you, and usually means you die. Congrats!

Curious Dinos by RafaSKB 2016-09-02T13:31:00

Excellent game that fits the theme. The objective, while not explicit, is clearly communicated through the design of the characters. The gameplay is intuitive and scoped correctly for a game jam of this kind.
