LD33 — You are the Monster

Sassy Monster City Smashin' by TheGamingProject 2015-08-25T01:44:00

The graphics were a bit rough (blurry or something? Couldn't exactly tell what.) but the animations were nice and the gameplay was simple but effective.

Sometimes it crashed before loading, but after refreshing a few times it worked and I could play it.

Telepath by Spotline 2015-09-05T15:50:00

I spent a lot of time wandering around the worlds and just looking at them in silence. It's an absolutely beautiful game and I love the experience. Right now it doesn't seem to tie in to the theme at all - I wasn't harming the humans from what I could tell.

I think there's tons of places where you could go with this. Please, please develop it into a full game with polished graphics and a game UI. Playing this game felt like playing a Myst game for the first time - just discovering the world as I walked through it. It's one of the rarest experiences in games for me, and I can't remember any other LD game where I've felt the same way.

So yes, it doesn't link the theme that much, but it was an absolutely stunning game and a beautiful experience. Please continue with it.

Abduction by Keon 2015-08-25T05:24:00

@A_K and AntonyBaasan:

I was lazy - all Windows OS/X and Linux link to the same thing. The jar should be a runnable jar - you can the jar itself either by double clicking or if that fails doing java -jar Abduction1.1.jar. If that doesn't work for you let me know, I can make you a .app, but first let me know if the .jar works for you. A friend tried it on mac and said it worked running the jar.

Sorry for the confusion, and I hope this helps.

Abduction by Keon 2015-09-07T20:02:00

@jcourt: On the earliest levels (before tanks start showing up) I've gotten every human once or twice, but on later levels no. The problem is some more spawn in the sides during the game, so if you clear an area you have to go back again to get the new spawns. If you get lucky they all spawn on one side and you can grab them then, but often you have to run back and forth and will probably miss one or two.

On the later levels not at all.

Monster Quest by lambomang 2015-08-25T04:59:00

The graphics are simple but for a text game they do their job and do it well enough. Overall it's a decent game for a few minutes, but after that time the random situation generator gets somewhat old. The writing of the situations and responses is great if often completely nonsensical.

I hope you flesh out the generator like you mentioned and release a new version in the future. It has some potential as a party game with many friends playing together, but I didn't have a chance to do that.

Stallman Quest by n42k 2015-09-05T15:28:00

Also getting 35/36 images and then stopping on embedded, web, and windows versions.

Consumption by Aevek 2015-08-25T06:02:00

The environment is very pretty but the edges have some sort of weird glow that takes away from the view up close.

Maybe I didn't get far enough in the game, but I don't really see the monster part? I didn't kill anything before it broke so maybe something happens then I guess.

I had a few glitches where I would lose the ability to open inventory or switch weapons, so I was unable to explore the full game.

Other than those problems the game is absolutely great. The minimalism is done well and the survival and building aspects are well done. I wish I had explored more of the game before it broke the inventory.

@the people who got stuck, press tab to open inventory, craft rocks into a knife. You can take it from there.

Moon Base Shootout by Unept 2015-08-25T05:38:00

Good game!

I liked the glass shattering mechanic but you could maybe have done a bit more with the vacuum puzzles other than "Shoot window to kill enemies in room". There was one puzzle that I remember but I would have loved some more. The aiming of the gun was a bit clunky but that may have just been my browser.

The memos were very well done - reading them was a good reward for clearing the rooms, and overall they told the story in a well paced manner. I wish you had a moment in the early game where you kill a room full of skittlemonsters so that you can feel extra bad afterwards.

I had one bug where some monsters were unkillable while others of the same type were easily dealt with. Not sure what caused that, but I got past it by running around so it was fine.

Overall a very nice and smooth game.

Harmless by hate-marina 2015-09-05T15:55:00

I how you have both the platformer sections and the runner sections linked so smoothly. The running section controls were a bit annoying - I think probably because if you held jump before you landed you wouldn't jump on landing.

Really like the art and sound. It's cute and I wish the game were longer so I could play it more. Very nicely done!

The Virus by okmmjyygv 2015-09-05T04:38:00

Pretty hard because of some glitches. I like the DNA AT/GC matching game the best, but the others had some problems.

Urd Monster by abcdef65g 2015-09-05T04:50:00

Overall nice game. I got stuck on collision edges a few times and had to restart. I tried to do a nonlethal playthrough and almost did it except for the final level with the shoot-on-sight guards.

Optimiser by madalaski 2015-08-25T21:13:00

The sound of the things firing sorta clashes with the theme. Other than that I really like the subtle way you presented the theme.

Stealth Yeti by cottontrek 2015-08-26T04:02:00

Very nicely done. The jumping causing a huge noise was something I hadn't seen done before, and it created some interesting scenarios. I love the artstyle - everything fits together in a nice color scheme except for the yeti.

Overall, everything was very well done. Great game!

An usual Day In a Troll's life by ajopart 2015-08-25T21:42:00

I like the running game, but the collisions are sometimes very clunky. The graphics are generally good but sometimes some glitches and odd parts get in the way.

It could do with some polish but I like the gameplay and it works well. Well done, it was fun!

Kaiju Boxing - a game in Twitch chat by NickFrushour 2015-08-26T04:53:00

The twitch broadcast delay is annoying and I really wish you had time to put in animations, but as it stands it's a fun quick game. Nice job taking the twitch interface and making a game out of it. The game itself is pretty standard but the interface is innovative and awesome.

Well done, and thanks for the fun game! Incidentally have you considered linking it to /r/twitchplayspokemon? It seems like they might like it.

Skulldor - The Burninator by davidcmcdonald 2015-08-25T08:01:00

The shooter "defend the structure" game is nothing new, but this is a really smooth version.

The graphics are generally very good, especially the flames on the skull and the flames you shoot. I love the knight death animation.

The controls are quite smooth and don't get in the way at all. Overall it's a very nice game well executed all around.

I think once you learn the basics it stays pretty much the same - you could use with a bit more depth to keep things fresh for longer, but overall it's a very nice arcade-y game to occupy a few minutes.

Dungeon Crawler -REVERSE! by nuiguy 2015-08-25T07:49:00

I think this would be a lot more fun if I had a mouse version, as you said. As it stands it's hard to experience it fully without getting frustrated by controls. I do like the simple aesthetic though.

Car of Monster by Alsatian Studio 2015-08-25T06:14:00

Pretty much echoing what people before me said:

Ramming into the pizza place losing is sad.
Driving down is hard.
I like the voxels and lowpoly but it was weird seeing both of them.

I liked the cartoonyness of the people - they worked fine for me w/o ragdolls and bloodspatters, but it did detract from the feeling of "You are the monster".

Car physics were a pain. It felt like I was driving a hovercraft sliding on ice - I could spin several times around before my car stopped sliding forwards.

I didn't actually use the guns at all - ramming was more fun.

Other than that, ramming into blocky people with a car is always great fun. With the exception of a few problems, the game is absolutely well done.

Lich Rising by juxipolo 2015-09-05T04:31:00

The controls are a bit hard to use, but it's an incredibly well done RTS for a Ludum Dare. Well done!

Groll's Revenge by cyrixd 2015-08-25T07:38:00

I love the concept of a stealth caravan raider game - it's something that I had never even considered until I saw this, but now that I have I'm shocked I haven't played one before.

There's just one thing about the gameplay that annoys me: there doesn't seem to be a way to avoid damage while you raid a caravan. If you get close enough to touch the corn, the archer protecting it is close enough to take a free shot at you that you can't really dodge. I can lure away the melee units, vanish into the forest, and grab their caravans, but the archers don't have such a tactic from what I could tell.

Maybe I'm missing some strategy, but it seems like it's inevitable you will take some archery damage from the guards. I think adding something like if you hit somebody with your lunge they get stunned for a second so you can retreat without getting shot?

Anyways, I'm getting sidetracked. The textures were nice but pretty simple. There were a few moments where I was fleeing from a huge mob before hiding in a tree or preparing to snatch three caravans at the same time when the game really got exciting, but in general the game gets dull after a few games.

That said it really was a fun game to play and I think I need to try something in the same genre later. Well executed all around, and thanks for the game!

Dungeon of the Mimic by Alpenter 2015-08-25T04:27:00

Nice game! The art is great, and the tutorials are smoothly integrated in the game. The names are a nice touch. I don't know if I played it to completion - I reached a level with a ghost and then it goes to the end screen. Not sure what that's about, is that the end?

Other than that, I found a tiny bug - if you die and restart many times, you can get to negative lives.

I am Malware by Finn 2015-09-05T05:06:00

I love the gameplay and artwork, but the controls (especially virus dropping) was a bit glitchy. Overall great game. I like the hints of story between levels - I'd love to see more of the world you showed.

The Stars are Watching by Xanderzoo 2015-09-05T04:18:00

Very nice game. I like the floatyness, but strafing + lack of friction didn't work well. The theme was well done.

Cthess by scumbly 2015-08-25T04:14:00

The idea behind this is awesome. The controls were hard to use for me and of course it wasn't finished, but I will certainly be returning to play the updated version. In the meantime, I love the graphics. It's a too bad the game wasn't finished on time but I can't wait for the full version.

Man Zapper by keyboardsan 2015-09-05T16:05:00

The animations were a bit choppy on the ship. The gameplay was simple but enjoyable. Overall some of the collisions were glitchy, and it felt like my laser would graze somebody and kill them when probably it should have missed.

Attack on Hyperboreans by neuroaktivo 2015-08-25T04:47:00

I wish there was a way to select which body and head you would get.

Other than that, it's a very nice game. I felt like my hitbox was huge and I wasn't dodging any of the shots, which took a lot of the feeling of skill out of the shooter. Other than that all the weapons were unique and fun. The graphics were really pretty, and the particle effects are subtle but critical.

I wish you had some sort of boss enemy or levels, something to spice up the monotony. Maybe you do, but if so they were /long/ levels.

Monster Doodle Battle! by superjai 2015-09-05T04:00:00

Tons of fun. I love the doodles and the monster design is great!

Ankabot by Cloudeyes 2015-08-26T04:17:00

I like the graphics a lot - it's a very nice, almost pointillist style and it works very well.

The gameplay is pretty basic but there's a reasonable amount of skill involved in it. Overall it's a fun game and a well done project.

Just to nitpick, if I remember right spiders and flies don't have blood, they have hemolymph, which ranges from transparent to a blueish-green color. But whatever, poetic licence.

Well done!

None Shall Tell by Eldy 2015-09-05T15:35:00

Mentally very hard for me to play all the way through. Well done! I think I left my fingerprints all over the safe, the body, and the cleaning supplies that I used to clean to blood, so I think once the body is found the police will probably still catch me.

Loading Complete by Nembo 2015-08-25T05:12:00

The graphics are very nice, and I especially like the background. Overall gameplay was dull, but the text provided enough engagement to keep me interested. Is there anything beyond the PRINT line if you keep doing it long enough?

Slime Hunter by Ardy 2015-08-26T04:35:00

Nice little game! The graphics are clear and nice but don't really have a constant style or color scheme. The collision detection was frustrating at times with reds, and having to restart the entire level was a pain. The audio was sometimes annoying.

That said. Holy cow your level design was great. Everything was there for a purpose. The way you introduced reds with a fall and then you had to learn to jump on them in a simple level before entering harder levels was great. The same with all the other levels. There was never a tutorial at all but you showed everything through the game. That's really impressive! The one thing I would say is that in some levels you had symmetry when you really didn't need it - if a player can do a jump once they can do it again, so it just extends the time it takes to restart if you mess up on the last slime.

Overall though - great game, especially for your first entry! Well done.
