LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Crunch Time by gelisam 2017-12-07T10:03:21Z

I feel this game is made more with devs in mind than artists like myself, I couldn't really figure out what anything did, and the interface design did little to pull me in far enough to commit the time to learning the game mechanics.

Crunch Time by gelisam 2017-12-07T11:04:25Z

@michaelsonbritt Thanks for the clarification!

Usually I'd say don't worry about spoon-feeding, but if learning the mechanics is a vital part of the gameplay (as seems the case with your game) then not-telling a lot of stuff is probably vital to your design. I'd say the game is solid as-is, it just doesn't fit me as a target audience, which is fine :)

As a game-design teacher who does a lot of teaching about interface design, I'd have to say there's disappointingly little to find on the subject online, so I can't really refer you to any one good source if you want to learn more about it.

I did find the leaked UI design doc for The Division to be fairly interesting, and there's a GDC talk by some Blizzard folk about Hearthstone's design seed which I always take to heart.

Good luck!

Bum Bag Bangin' by DuzzOnDrums 2017-12-07T11:47:28Z

Holy shi-. I don't mean to explode all your heads, but DAMN this is a tight delivery for a gamejam. Missed variation in gameplay, but the art, humor and overall execution makes up well for it!

Plastic by jeroenwimmers 2017-12-07T16:54:12Z

One of my favourites this LD, very clean looking, wonderfully executed. I could easily see this as an addictive mobile game!

Shear Panic by marjie 2017-12-07T10:17:09Z

Seriously one of the few games that delivers on humor really well. The gameplay is very clunky, but definitely funny. The sound gets annoying after a while though.

+1 for fly-swatting dragons.

Venny is in Trouble by djosef 2017-12-07T17:01:19Z

Familiar but fun game, well executed and I love the art style!

Captain Capsize by Lance Krasniqi 2017-12-08T10:58:48Z

@wheffle have you tried scrolling whilst holding an item with the left mouse button? It's a bit clunky we admit, but it allows you to pull items toward you.

TO HOT TO DOG by Lonzago_Art 2017-12-07T09:57:05Z

Hey Pretty decent game! A classical management game that ties well into the theme. I enjoyed the animation part of the art the most. I had some trouble learning which image corresponded with which order in the beginning, but once I got the hang of it it was pretty solid.

The Sun Revolves Around ME! by blu3bird 2017-12-07T10:11:45Z

It's a decent prototype, but lacks a lot of visual feedback, or clear visual feedback. It was kind of hard to understand the goal and how to achieve it. Pacing started out really slow and then complexity ramps up very quickly. I guessed the plusses meant a planet was doing good, because minuses clearly indicated a freezing planet, but then there was no symbol for a too hot planet, only a color and the lack of a symbol.

Also, do the planets heat and cool at different rates from eachother?

Bloody Pop-ups! by CSdoesCS 2017-12-07T09:50:38Z

I liked the style and execution on the theme, but I've seen this game before many times, and would have loved to see you do something else with it.

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Sacrifice Powers by sky_fighter 2018-12-06T08:24:35Z

Not too bad if you're just starting out in making games, it's still very basic though, keep practicing!

A Sworded Tale by Snowdrama 2018-12-05T19:03:49Z

I'll give props for the ambition here, quite courageous to for an RPG in a gamejam.

Chopping Block by speakertone 2018-12-05T18:58:06Z

Works pretty well, the puzzles were engaging and I liked having to remember all the rules, reminds me of Kingsing, which is a dutch drinking game with cards haha

Jingle Bell Rocket by nucleartide 2018-12-05T08:53:24Z

Ah this would have been really cool if you'd just included some more platforms. Maybe sacc elves to feed your rocket launcher?

Demonstration Went Wrong ! by FlavienRombouts 2018-12-04T13:32:04Z

It looks decent, the animations are funny in combination with the rigidbody trouble it sometimes has. The day/night cycle works until you get to the night phase, where your materials don't look very good. I thought the principle of it was cool, but though there are a whopping nine choices of characters, there's not much for the player to do but shove the poor demonstrators around a bit until they are all dead.

Sacrifices must be made - Ludum Dare 43 by great-bobleny 2018-12-06T08:32:38Z

Sounds were a bit intense, graphics could have been more consistent. Gameplay was slow but worked fairly well. Good job!

Oh Mayan God by Maksime 2018-12-04T13:08:00Z

Hi,

Pretty decent game! I thought the art wasn't too consistent, though the animations are on the whole very nice. The insta-death on nearly invisible spikes wasn't fun though, if you had had either lives, or more visible spikes it might have been a fair game, but right now it feels very unfair, especially when you're pretty far into the game, it doesn't feel good to have to start over.

Good job on getting a whole game done within the time though!

Elder Loop by cyriaque 2018-12-05T18:10:30Z

Not too bad at all, though I think the knights have a bit too much HP.

10Up Origins by JdH 2018-12-04T13:24:59Z

I had some fun for a while, making my own factory of workers who were unfortunate to be in my employ, but everything takes sooo long. I just ended up spamming the incentives just so that something would happen.

Burn-Out by Tom Kurcz 2018-12-05T19:11:10Z

Holy shit this blew me away. So simple to start, didn't really expect much, but really very well executed, well done!
