@zell crap! I was so exhausted last night. Thanks for letting me know, I've fixed it
Its insane that you were able to make something of this scale and polish in just 48 hours. Well done!
had a lot of fun playing! :) I dug out everything, dam those waves

Very nice game! Impressive that you have so many working entities in 48h. Also the game feels really balanced which is more difficult as that number grows i suppose. Funny how shooting at the sea has no real value yet I'm ready to invest many of my resources towards it.

The only issues I had is diggers trying to dig the same block, no matter how many digging facilities I build. Sometimes they would dig a couple of blocks from one side of the map, leave a couple of blocks undigged and move to another side to do the same; since there is no urgency in the game, it never was critical, I just had to wait for them to do their thing a little more. :D
I really like that this game, although quite complex for a compo jam standards, can be easily played and figured out without a tutorial. I don't remember game telling me what to do, but it was straightforward to figure out. Note that I'm not a city builder player.
I noticed the similarities with Gnorp game even before reading your game description. :D The wave destruction part was the thing that caught my eye here.
Overall, this is a very strong compo entry. I played it for a good 40-45 minutes, which is a very good score for a jam game.
One thing I would like to have is an ability to have some control over the number of workers (diggers) doing something. E.g. I wanted to send 1 digger into the deep depths, but what ended up happening is all of them falling in there; so I had to cancel this mad operation shortly after (it wasn't the late game, so I needed my diggers elsewhere). I'm not sure how to achieve that without giving a direct control over units (which is against the indirect control nature of the game I guess)... But perhaps you have some ideas for it?
The game had some mechanics that I discovered only later. Like the ability to build on the artificially created blocks. But the one thing I giggled about was the ability to build something, then remove the ground below the building and build somethting else directly beneath it (it saves 1 vertical tile space which can be good for the base density). Here is an example: Screenshot_2024-10-08_02-38-28.png
The only issue I had is, I could not figure out how to make the factories work.
Other than that, I like this game a lot, I'll definitely come back after the rating period is over and finish it! :smile:
Also please check your Ludum Dare link on Itch, I could not reach this page form there and had to manually fix the link.
@refrax295 Thank you so much!
@rickylee Holy crap, you must have needed so many armories :open_mouth:
@douwe-ravers Thank you! Hah, yes, I wanted to do it precisely because of the futility
@quasilyte Thank you for the detailed feedback! Yeah the digger AI was a little bit of a mess, and I couldn't figure out how to fix it without making them tunnel underneath and have blocks they couldn't reach. Definitely something to improve if I take this further.
Also, amazing, the fabled vertifactory
@fenderbate Thank you! And I've fixed that link, thanks for letting me know. The factories just kinda do their thing when you build them. I ran out of time for making womps actually work in them.
@vfqd thank you sir, I like my factories vertical!
Great game! I almost finished it but I got stuck at the LAST UPGRADE... I stuck my guys at the bottom of the huge pit I did and I didn't have anymore sand to build ladder nor anyway to dig my way up 😿
I loved the idea that you had the mining game, the colony building game and the "doing the war to the sea" game
I saw 2 bugs / weird things, * 1 I couldn't build sandblock below the sea (and I needed to build floor for my base) * 2 I kept placing blocks when clicking upgrades
Anyway great submission I never tried to build a colony builder game like that but it seems quite code intensive, very impressive for a 48 h game 🙀

Fun game, though, 1 archer being able to solo every wave felt very silly xD
This was so good! And super polished for 48hrs! Really loved the sound effects. The game feels very balanced and I really like the progression and pacing
@dekajoo Thank you! And I'm sorry about your base :see_no_evil: I realised after the jam that there's a big problem with ladders costing so much and no way to get resources if you have no runners
@pirate-rob Thanks! Yeah the sea part was the weakest part of the game. It wasn't that important to the progression though so I focused elsewhere. Anyways, shooting at the sea is inherently dumb xD
@rohun Thank you so much! <3
Wow this is so much fun! I somehow nuked the sea in the ending (but why? lol)
Really enjoyed playing through this game. Lots to love here. A few bugs, I'm sure you're aware of already: Can't place sand blocks left of the ocean, Digger and Runner AIs can get stuck, clicking in the upgrades screen also sometimes clicks on objects in the background, etc. I think others have already mentioned these.
Most importantly though, this was genuinely fun to play.
Very fun! I like the visual style. Was a little confusing at first, short-term goals were unclear. Wasn't sure at first if the waves would be an actual threat or not.
First thing I did was dig down and get stuck without being able to build or unlock ladders.
Once I got into the swing of things, it all went pretty smoothly.
Archers seemed a bit useless? The artillery seemed to be completely overpowering the waves. And without being able to build platforms over the water, my archers just had to sit and watch.
It'd be nice if the diggers wouldn't stack digging the same tile, even if it results in getting stuck. I'd say ladders are a good way to get unstuck, and the ability to easily delete ladders would be nice.
Overall pretty solid.
@dgspitzer We hate the sea!
@happytrollangus Thanks so much!
@alchemic The wave part is the weakest part and is not so well balanced, thanks for the feedback.
Wonderful game! I'm a big sucker for these kinds of games and this one really scratches that itch super well! I unfortunately couldn't beat the game, since at some point, my collector guys got stuck somewhere, so my production completely halted.
Absolutely great entry. The game has really good features and it doesn't take long to learn them. There's a fun sort of exploration to figure out what things do and it feels satisfying. A few bugs, but considering the scale of the game I don't think they're a big issue. Loved the game, keep it up!
This was really, really cool. Amazing, what you managed to build in such a short time! Surprisingly good pathfinding, and a nice variety of things to build.
During the first try I did manage to very quickly get myself into an unwinnable condition by directly digging down. But that was just player error. Only thing that could be improved is how the units choose their jobs. All of the diggers seem to go to the same place every time, it seems. And runners tried to go into the sea before they could, focusing on an unreachable item and being stuck.
I was truly stunned when I finished this in-depth, fun and beautiful game and it said 'made in 48 hours'. I honestly wished I could work that well and that fast and make games like that for a compo. The graphics are super consistent and clear, which really made the game easy to play and pretty to look at. I only experienced minor pathfinding issues, but never fully game breaking, which to me is impressive. The game also really fits the 'tiny creature' theme to me, so great job. As a Dutch person, we hate the sea! Amazing entry!
It is absolutely astounding that you were able to create something this fun, this polished, and this wonderful in 48 hours. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece, and can't wait to see what you do next.

It's a nice game, but I just didn't like the digging algorithm. It seems to me that it would be logical if they dug like a "snake" or prioritized creating corridors rather than lines. Anyway: it's a very enjoyable game.
@hare-software and @untitled-studios these are some of the nicest comments I've ever received on a game. Thank you both so much <3
I like how the sound effects layered together, without needing to be timed to the music to synergize. Having a finale was also a good idea.
