Fun game mechanic

koolruz 2024-04-16 03:08

Made it through to the end! :) I didn't *quite* understand what the highlighting on the floor meant (and I ran into some weird issues in the final puzzle where I kept moving the opposite direction that I expected when casting a spell to move right), but overall I had a good time with the game!

silverash 2024-04-16 03:15

The game is fun and the tutorials are pretty instructive. Nice game! Some levels you made got eureka moments, they are fun! Hope to play more levels with more mechanics.

I love seeing puzzle games in the Jam. Made to the end, and felt clever doing it! Very classic design with a great twist where the world moves around as you play cards. I could you taking this much further, and like you say, the design space here is huge! It's also interesting to hit the end of the puzzle with extra cards. It's almost like you have different difficulties in one puzzle room -- If you need all the cards, you have them... but if you can finish only using two or three that's almost like the "advanced solution." I really like that.

Don't be to bummed by the way time worked out, I think you put together a great demo of what your idea could be, and it was fun, puzzling, and super successful. Congrats on getting the game in the jam, and I'm excited to see the next one.

@koolruz Hey, thanks for playing, the highlight on the ground shows the path that the cards in your hand can take you, the lighter highlight shows the card that the mouse is over, and the darker highlight shows the path of all the other cards, I decided to do it to try to help the player visualize the paths, without any highlights it was a little too difficult for my taste, but apparently you didn't even need to use it :), a little QoL never hurts

crylica 2024-04-16 03:30

Excellent level/puzzle design, the puzzles you've put together are unique and explore different strategies with the existing mechanics. I think it doesn't really fit the theme but it's a fun game regardless!

koolruz 2024-04-16 03:33

Oh, that makes sense, and would have been super useful! I understood the darker highlight from context, but the lighter one stumped me

This was a fun one — always like seeing more puzzle games, and this felt minimal in a very clear way. I struggled a little bit with the patterns on cards / outlines on the final level, moving me directions I didn't quite understand (maybe I'm rotating?), but was able to finish anyway. Thanks for sharing — glad you were able to get this out for the jam since I enjoyed playing it!

Great game submission! Really enjoyed the gameplay for this one. The game gradually adding new elements into the mix helped to keep things fresh while also not overwhelming them by having to much to learn at the start.

Art style for this game was very nice!

Its a shame there is no audio but overall amazing work!

brainrottedven 2024-04-16 04:36

A bit confusing at first, but after messing around a bit I managed to get to the end, it wasn't overwhelming. I would have liked to see the elementals a bit more though. I wasn't sure what I was summoning and thought it was just movement.

partkyle 2024-04-16 05:04

I love this idea. I don't think I have seen this before. it's a pretty cool puzzle game.

finde 2024-04-16 05:05

That was fun! Well done.

svenerik 2024-04-16 05:06

Very well done! The game play was really jolly good and wasn't too hard for a non-puzzle player like me. Would have benefited from some audio or gfx for some extra uumpf to it, but a great one nevertheless!

human 2024-04-16 05:07

I do not get it properly. The Cards at the bottom are trying give the idea whats gonna happen but I am not getting it. I think I understand how the Hat will going to move but cant understand how the orange block will move. I am completing the levels by random try. I think Now I get it how the orange blocks are moving but cant understand how card is moving the hat.

andriybyelikov 2024-04-16 05:17

@luc-creationallabs I beat the game three times because I didn't understand this one. I'm assuming this one is wrong.

Otherwise I understood that the gray blocks are fences that prevent you from falling, the arrowless orange cube just goes back and forth left and right, and that the orange cubes with the arrows go in that specific direction as many number of cells as you advance.

Verdict: cozy puzzle game out of ten.

Pretty sweet puzzle mechanic! Not really in line with the theme but a fun game nonetheless

muhyrla 2024-04-16 05:30

i like puzzle games, and this one have interesting mechanic, like it! good luck!

zungryware 2024-04-16 05:40

I think some of the cards are mismatched from the actual effect they have in the game. The early levels in the game are very easy. I kept randomly stumbling into the correct solution until the last level, where I didn't yet know how certain mechanics worked. Generally, when a puzzle introduces a new mechanic, you want to make it so the player cannot feasibly beat the level unless they fully understand that mechanic. Maybe it's a problem of solution space. When a level has three cards (which is a decent amount of information for a player to remember already), there are only six different orders to play those cards.

I enjoyed the subversion in the fourth level. That is a good example of a puzzle that teaches the player how multiple mechanics interact.

I liked the idea and the execution. Once I understood the movement of the orange boxes I really started to think strategically. I'm glad you managed to finish despite your struggles. Some audio would have been nice, and I would have loved to try a few more levels. Thanks for the game!

auxc 2024-04-16 06:11

Hey, we also made a game about a wizard in a cage! :D

This game is very neat and well made. It's super smooth! Appreciated that a lot when I needed a bunch of quick restarts to figure out the Brain Melter.

Kudos, very well done!

Nice concept, reminds me of games like golf peaks. I missed on the highlights the square of the player to be purple, to more easily recognize the shapes. The wasting turns mechanic seemed interesting and with some potential, unfortunately it is not used much. Making a game in 72 hours is very hard, so congratulations on finishing something!

dxk2294 2024-04-20 01:42

Neat puzzle game! Relatively easy to understand, and the levels had some interesting designs to them. As you already pointed out, I would have loved to have some audio.

Nice and original puzzle game! I found at least one card that worked differently from what it said on its face: it made the player go left instead of right. I am confused about the highlights on the floor when you hover over a card: the highlights show the path, but what do the low highlights show? Also I could click on the tiles to make them highlight, does this have a function? These confusing elements made me wonder if I could not complete a level because I missed some game mechanic. I would recommend making the arrows on the orange blocks more visible.
