The game look good and the mecanique to switch surface to walk is fun, caution with the texture for the surface where we walk it's not really visible in the dark.

This is cool! The art’s beautiful—I love the illustrative style and the choice of palette—and the mechanic is more challenging than it appears at first glance. I couldn’t get past the second level, though: there’s a place near the top center where I kept dying even though it looked like I was still in a fully lit area. The movement direction changing with gravity flips also threw me off in places, though maybe that’s intentionally part of the challenge?

This cover drew me in! I love the composition and the color palette, and it's admirable that there was time in the compo to draw such a beautiful cover!

The mechanics of the game are interesting, the colors and textures within the game are also quiet and elegant (I can't think of another good word).

snesgaard 2023-10-03 13:26

Great art and concept. Were kind of hard for me to tell the darkness and platforms apart, but I guess that is part of the challenge.

madbarron 2023-10-18 18:32

Cool concept! Very difficult. I tried the second level about 20 times and gave up :( it was too hard to tell where the platforms are, and I found it to be pretty frustrating. With some fine-tuning though it could be pretty good. Congrats on your first Ludum Dare :)

PS: The braziers look like spikes. Since spikes are such a common obstacle in platformers, you might want to make them look more inviting.

On my PC, this screen does not exit after I start the executable. I click and press all the buttons and it doesn't leave this screen. Did it just happen to me? 6666.jpg

The game looks good. But I didn't fully understand the game. The level 1 was easy. But I couldn't finish the level 2. I've try to go from the left but I died on the ending sprite. And through the right it did nothing when I was on the ending. Good luck for your 20 votes.

The idea is fun and the game is looking pretty good. The controls is a bit confusing, and this sometimes makes the game a bit difficult to play. But overall is this an interesting little jam game.

aweskybear 2023-10-18 19:39

It's a cute game. The graphics are sweet.. I am thinking that if you could add some lighting (map) effects on the surroundings so they are illuminated while moving, it would be even sweeter. : ))

The game itself can get quite challenging, the mechanic is nice but I am also thinking that if you replicated jump/left/right controls to always work like you are in regular position (does that make sense?) it would be a bit more intuitive.

Final note: sound effects are ok but a bit harsh on the ear, I'd prefer a bit softer ones.

After some tries (there is this tricky part, nice :P ) I got to the end of the 2nd level.. touched the exit spiral but nothing happened? Are there more levels?

Overall, it's a nice game and a solid core : ))

octahedron 2023-10-18 19:44

@madbarron Very solid points. I intentionally made it hard but now it seems to be a bit too challenging... Will try to modify the platform and braziers and also lower the difficulty. Thanks for the feedback!

Love the graphic style! The concept and game itself are attractive. Good job!

scarytreegames 2023-10-18 21:51

Overall the game concept is not bad. If you continue to work on this game, you might end up with something interesting and unusual :)

tomatolamp 2023-10-18 22:02

Like many have said, visually, you've made a charming little entry - nice work for the compo! I also made a frustrating to control entry, so I'm maybe biased towards the controls but I found it to be a fun challenge - I only wish I didn't die to so many holes I couldn't see.

beeb-gamecodecompany 2023-10-18 22:41

Graphics are like out of a kids book, nicely done, almost look illustration worthy. I was able to make it to the end of level 2 from 2 different paths but nothing happens, guessing the end? I didn't like the controls that much, I wasn't able to jump if too close to walls. I also like your use of theme, stands out compared to others and definitely feels like a good take on the theme.

ty-victorson 2023-10-18 23:34

Really great job with the graphics, the game looked beautiful! The only issue I found was not being able to complete the second level I made it to the end a couple times but wasn't able to get passed there. Regardless congrats on the compo entry and great game

novicedevgames 2023-10-19 02:11

the game mechanic is great but the collisions (and controls but i see the idea behind it) are a bit frustrating , sometimes the game change gravity even tough i didn't touch the torches . I like the art style but some platforms are nearly impossible to see as they are too dark , making them fade in the background .

leritrea 2023-10-19 10:20

I like the art style and the game mechanics, but sometimes the controlls are a little bit confusing espacially when the astronaut is on the ceiling.

bliny-lynx 2023-10-19 21:11

Yay, I won!

It's a solid entry for your first time, we all know how running out of time happens. Would gladly have played many levels more.

The gravity transition when touching the light beacons is a bit jarring and difficult to predict, some animation there would help a lot for gaining intuition. I kinda felt like I beat the levels by accident instead of thinking through.

I like that you prioritized sfx over bg music, makes things feel more responsive.

octahedron 2023-10-19 22:46

@aweskybear I wish I could have a 3rd level but I was running out of time (submitted 1 min before the deadline, phew). @novicedevgames Modified the collision boxes for both the astronaut and the torches. Should be better now. Thanks for mentioning.

@beeb-gamecodecompany Yay I'm so happy you found the second way! It's meant to be a challenging shortcut. @ty-victorson @novicedevgames Yes, something was wrong with the exit spiral. It's now fixed and should lead you to a thank-you note and the exit screen.

@madbarron @snesgaard Thanks for mentioning the platform texture. I was way too familiar with the game to notice it. Should be much easier now to tell them apart from the bg/darkness.

@tomatolamp @leritrea @jk5000 @tomatolamp Thanks for the suggestion on player control! I swapped left/right input when the astronaut is up on the ceiling and it should be less confusing now.

@bliny-lynx I guess that's the downside of lowering the difficulty of level 2. Wish I could have more challenging levels for you...

Thank you so much for the feedback everyone!

sinclairstrange 2023-10-19 23:51

Lovely graphics and atmosphere, really well done! I did find the controls at first a little confusing to work with when the gravity shifts but after a while I got that down and was able to play smoothly! Really interesting gimmick and it's a shame there was only two levels because it was really interesting. Overall really solid game, highly enjoyed! :)

octahedron 2023-10-20 00:51

@sinclairstrange Thanks a ton for playing the game! I'm so glad you like it.

casper935 2023-10-20 05:45

Great Job! I love the concept of the game and the art style is fantastic. Managing time and scope is always a difficult task, especially for a first entry, but even with only 2 levels I had a lot of fun playing!

tetracold 2023-10-20 11:06

The idea is pretty cool!

The visuals are very nice, I like the thye choice of a cold palette as it helps selling the whole space alien look! it would be nice if there was some music too tho

the integration of the theme is pretty creative, I like the whole trying to stay in the light thing. It would be helpful if the player had a light circle around them that would fade the more you go in the darkness, I think it could help with some of that visibility issue with some of the platforms

the controls are a little confusing, I recommend trying to make them match the angle of the player, especially on vertical surfaces. I was always always subconciously trying to match the facing angle and it kinda confused me.

this could be a really cool little puzzle game if you would expand more on the gimmick! Pretty good!

f1krazy 2023-10-20 20:31

A tricky little platformer, with a clever interpretation of the theme. I found myself disappointed that there were only two levels, there's definitely a lot more that can be done with this. The sounds feels a little lacking but the graphics are extremely impressive. I hope you'll revisit this in the future!
