I love farming games, fantastic entry!

edom-games 2023-10-02 23:18

Interesting idea I like it. I can see this expanding, however I feel like I'm clicking more than a league match lol. But overall it's a solid base

1.png Nice game! This reminds me of many survival games that start from scratch (such as Minecraft's Island Survival Challenge). It's very interesting and has a lot of potential and scalability.

I'm a big fan of farming games with pixel art, so this was right up my alley. It was a little confusing at first, but I love that there were a lot of instructions in-game, including a guide on the actual gameplay screen. I also found the tool structure to be a little unintuitive, especially with the incorporation of "hands" being a tool and a hammer being used to smash rocks instead of using a pickaxe like how a lot of other farming sims handle rocks. I kept mistaking the hammer for a hoe. But after a while, I got used to it and found myself enjoying this. After a while, it becomes quite relaxing in spite of the shrinking time limit and limited space to plant crops. I didn't really use the shop all that much since it felt like the upgrades weren't really that beneficial. I guess by expanding, they would become more useful, but even though I used up all my rocks, I didn't find the island that much larger (especially given the more rocks appear to be used to build 1 piece of the island as the time gets shorter).

The music helped give the game a relaxing mood and the blocky style graphics were cute. I do like the tiny tidbits of humour sprinkled into the shop and the game description. It was adorable. The sound effects worked well, but I do think that the notification messages that pop up on the screen (the ones that tell you how much money you get while harvesting) become overwhelming when you're trying to harvest a lot at once.

A quality of life suggestion I have is that I would have liked to be able to continuously use the same tool by clicking and holding when you're nearby an actionable item instead of having to constantly click and hold. I do see that there are upgrades related to clicking and holding, but they seem more for range rather. I think for non-upgraded tools, clicking and holding could still be executed as long as the character was directly next to the applicable item.

Overall, I thought this game hit all the right notes and was quite a chill experience. Great work. (apparently images are broken right now but that's supposed to be my end screen, hope it works soon)

compasslg 2023-10-03 01:47

I'm not a fan of farming games, but the game play felt pretty smooth and I was able to complete a few rounds

branquelo 2023-10-03 04:26

It's a mixture of farm games with games like forager. I liked a lot. It can gro to a bigger game easily, good job!

eroxxie 2023-10-03 09:07

Reminded me alot of of Forager but with farming in focus, i like it!

marti-mayolas 2023-10-03 09:47

I love it, really addictive and pulish , the graphics and musics was pretty good and the gameplay so smooth, congratulation on the work!!

remus 2023-10-03 11:14

The mechanics are okay. I was particularly impressed with how the tools felt in-game. The graphics have this simple charm, though the UI could use a touch-up. Overall, it's got a lot going for it. Good job!

spike-studio 2023-10-03 16:31

Cool game! The art was pretty great, wish it had a small tutorial in game, but other than that once I got it down it was awesome!

akitl 2023-10-03 20:43

realy chill, i love this kind of game !

gilgadev 2023-10-03 21:29

Loved the game! Farming games are great and this one nails it! Good art and the gameplay loop is fun. Controls are easy and intuitive. Good Job!

My island size was 38. Probably not a great number. As an FYI, when I click "View submission" on your itch.io page, it takes me to "https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/tiny-farm-island/edit" and then throws a warning that I don't have permission to edit the page. I removed the "edit" at the end and got here to your Ludum Dare project page. To fix it, I think you have to edit your LD page in your itch.io project to take out the "edit" at the end.

Great concept! The theme was implemented very well and the game was really polished. Personally, I find the game to hectic. To me, farming games are usually something calm and relaxing and the music used would suggest so, too. Which is in stark contrast to the acutal game play which is frantic due to the time limit. I the game design works really well overall, though - especially in the context of a game jam. The intro text got a chuckle out of me as well. Well done.

Pretty amazing! Love the pixel art! Can see many great details during game play.

palord 2023-10-04 11:45

I really enjoyed played to your game ! It is simple, intuitive and with a lot of dopamine ! May be it is possible to make it a litle less stressfull Ahah

hiding-dev 2023-10-04 13:15

Good Game! Enjoyed playing this

flying-butter-studio 2023-10-04 14:17

Absolutely awesome work! Nice game, fun to play  But what to do with all my money?! I want to spend it !

Congrats!

obittner 2023-10-04 15:00

Nice game. Despite the fact that you always perform the same actions, it doesn't get boring. Simple and potentially addictive.

johntronco 2023-10-04 22:16

Great game! I survived for 447 seconds on my first attempt, and grew the island to 117. I liked being able to continue playing after the time limit. The only bug I found was expanding in one direction and reaching the map limit lets you escape the island.

mistercarson 2023-10-05 04:06

Honestly, the number one thing that stood out to me was the music. It eased me in and creating that fun, relaxing vibe.

iron-head 2023-10-05 16:03

I got to 112, then I continued playing, then I made a ton of money, then I found a wife, then I raised 16 kids, then I decided to make the whole island just rocks, then I abandoned this idea, then I started making the island into a heart shape, then I abandoned this idea, then I built to the edge of the map, and then... I just went ahead to explore the un**LIMITED SPACE**.

The game is great. It is satisfying, it is polished, it has good sound, it is original, it is the game I'm going to be playing during Zoom meetings instead of Tetris from now on. Amazing.

unknow 2023-10-06 08:54

Adorable game. Very relaxing and satisfying! Loved it a lot!

honest-dan 2023-10-07 11:04

This actually got more fun than I expect. Seemed a little basic to begin, but when things speed up then you feel you've always got something to do which feels good.

some feedback: - took a while to understand it took 3 stones to expand the land, I knew I could expand it but after picking up my first stone I tried using hands to put in water but didnt do anything. - I liked the hold-to-use upgrades, as I tried doing that before even seeing the upgrades existed, so changed the way of playing. It did have a negative that I kept accidentally expanding my island when trying to harvest crops, but thats something that could be seen as strategy - dont have crops next to coast line. - I did not notice the shop until about half my time was gone :D - I wonder if having crops expire / grow bigger coulda been interesting - be interesting if there was some more benefit to expending land, some bonus based on distance between things for example

decipator 2023-10-07 13:23

Oof, this one was a addicting experience! I wonder how cool would it be to flesh it out to expanding into a farm and dealing wit animals and produce as well...

Anyway, maybe a bit too much. I liked how simple and easy to get it going. Good entry. Please make more content/modes!

quoclon 2023-10-07 19:24

Main Meny + Intro Song + Particles + Composition = Chill Vibes. Love It. Black outline around all the art added such a pop! Once I got into the flow of the primary game loop (harvesting, "planting", expanding) it was really a lot of fun (and kinda stressful, in a good way!). I didn't notice the store at first, so some sort of UI wiggle, or maybe have it turn a color when it becomes available would be a cool additional feature. It's a very solid entry, well done James :)

2thegamechanger 2023-10-08 18:11

I really love how it escalates! I made $77 and an island size of 46. Reminds me a lot of Forager and the old Robinson Crusoe games. Well done!

ategon 2023-10-11 01:35

Hey, I’m the host of the Ludum Dare score chasers tournament for this jam

Wanted to ask for score chasers if you were fine with me playing some gameplay of your game in the background in the waiting period / intermission. In the waiting period its going to cycle between gameplay of a bunch of different games in the background (with music from games in the jam playing as well)

gamesplusjames 2023-10-11 11:33

@ategon of course, feel free to do that šŸ™‚
