I guess I made it? Cool game! Quick restarts. I was missing the incentive in getting the dollars. Maybe instead of a postsign a random customer sprite would have been cooler. Otherwise very solid entry!

I like the retro graphics! I got stuck on the level with the long spike wall on the right and the large pool of lava at the bottom with 1 tile island with the tip floating above it. If I got past the spike at the bottom of the left side drop, I fell into that lava pit, ha ha. If I avoided the lava, I hit that spike. Given the gap between them, this is on me I'm pretty sure lol.

Audio volume is a little inconsistent in a few places, mostly just really loud at the end of a few of the stages.

Congrats and good work!

The retro graphic art style is super well done! The only thing I don't like about it is the giant light blue square staring me in the face, but you work with what palettes you have :P. The platforming is really well done, I also appreciate the directional collision!! That's so neat! Maybe the only thing I would tweak is the background color if there was a kinder option available, and maybe the clarity of the lava tiles' danger zone, as they match the heights of the tiles around them. Other than that, the game is super fun to play. Great job!

FYI the game doesn't work on ldjam page (tried in chrome and firefox) but I managed to run it on itch. I liked it - pretty challenging, nice retro graphics, logo inspired by super mario bros, many levels. Would be even better if levels changed automatically without pressing space (also not a fan of a level complete sound).

Nice game, found it a bit difficult as I suck at precision platformers but had a lot of fun, good job :)

Given the mildly evil level design, the controls could have been a bit more forgiving, but I finished it and had fun with it! The art and sound are cute (though the level end jingle is much louder than anything else).

vectrex28 2023-05-01 13:10

Not bad at all! Quite liked it in fact. The graphics are very charming and so are the sound effects. Just with there would have been music to truly complete the package. The controls are a bit slippery but I ended up getting used to them in the end and finished it no problemo.

My only gripe with it is that there are a few bugs. On some levels you could just go left and it would clear the level. I also once got stuck in the top left edge of the topmost block in Level 7 (Thankfully going back to the title fixed that).

Still, a good effort and a great submission :)

@rhewid thanks for playing, i noticed that the sign as the level ending sprite didn't make much sense right during my final round of playtesting, but by then there wasn't enough time to actually change anything so i just left it as is. i also wanted to have a count of how many tips you got during the title screen but forgot to add that in lol

calicedev 2023-05-01 14:01

@kent-lizardo thanks for playing, i thought the background colour looked fine while playing on my laptop but when i tried it on my desktop i noticed that the colours were in general way stronger there, so i'm guessing my laptop's screen has some issues. i'll be sure to test out how my colours look on my desktop in future games lol.

@kgurniak91 thanks for playing, the game runs fine on the ldjam page for me, it might be browser differences? i'm on firefox, i also read that the ld embed can be janky?

calicedev 2023-05-01 14:06

@vectrex28 thanks for playing, i had noticed the bug where you get stuck on the corner of the block during playtesting but by the time i noticed there was only 1 hour left on the compo and i still had plenty of stuff to do and decided that debugging the collision detection would probably hurt the game more than just leaving that there. i also had made and added music to the game, but for some reason it did not play when compiling to web

Good work! The movement controls feel nice and the graphics are charming. It has that thing where you want to keep trying over and over again. I got stuck on level 4 or 5 where there's a dip on the middle platform with spikes over it. I couldn't figure out how to jump out of the hole without hitting the spikes.

castitatis 2023-05-01 15:40

Nice cute little game :) I got stuck too at some point, couldn't find when to jump to avoid hitting the spikes on the ceiling

triangle-point 2023-05-01 16:22

Fun game controls felt a bit fast but good game with nice graphics.

jakeblake 2023-05-01 18:08

Just challenging enough without being frustrating. The quick restarts helped. I really liked it. :)

100th-coin 2023-05-01 19:46

Cool game! I found out that you can run off the left of the screen to interact with object on the right. Classic screen-wrapping! The art is nice, and the sound effects are too!

I recorded myself playing to share as much feedback as possible:

calicedev 2023-05-01 20:20

@100th-coin thanks for playing, my guess as to what's happening when going off-screen is that when the player's coordinates are negative in any axis it is trying to read a negative index in the array, leading to it reading incorrect data and that sometimes the incorrect data it reads matches with the tile id of the level ending, i really should have caught that during development lol. the video feedback is really appreciated!

cinterre 2023-05-01 21:56

Nice work on the jump physics, feels really tight. I also really appreciated the fast restarts. I don't normally have the patience for these types of games but I played the whole thing as each level felt just within reach.

enver-arco 2023-05-01 22:04

Super cute graphics and nice level design

waffleworksgames 2023-05-01 22:34

Beat it! Very fun platformer with a nice feel to the movement. Love the retro style. I had some volume inconsistencies with the sound effects, but other than that nice work!

xandruher 2023-05-02 17:56

Cute little platformer game. Usually I hate 2d platformers but this one was very great. I liked the balancing and control of the jump + the level design was really good fitting to it. The increase of difficulty was also very well managed. I had my fun playing it and even I was dying a lot it took me to finish it!

rngames 2023-05-03 01:59

✔️ Nice small bite sized levels + quick restarts keeps the game challenging but not frustrating.

✔️ Not usually a fan of floaty platformer controls, but with the level design done here it worked really well.

✔️ Clear art style; intuitive controls.

➖ Sometimes the hit boxes could be a bit off: I managed to stand on a spike at one point.

⭐ Overall: Good job!

makuck95 2023-05-03 13:50

Nice small game. I think it will be better if lava would not be on the same level than ground block, lave should be minimal low because now you can stay on ground and also hit lava and lost. Next thing is collision end block, the hero slips from it. Maybe you could add some music and lava animation. Also you can add control with WASD key Good job with map editor :)

bonzochuff 2023-05-03 14:55

I liked it! the player controls were responsive and the level design was also solid. My one critique is that the collision with the spikes and lava is pretty unforgiving and may be too big. Sometimes I would hit the same tile as a spike and die when it felt like my character's sprite did not actually touch it. Great job!

sodoj 2023-05-04 10:54

Hey Cassie, this is a neat little platformer! It took me some time to get used to the floaty controls, but once I got a hang of it I was able to pull some sick moves that felt super satisfying to perform! The level design is great, early levels allow you to get accustomed to controls easily while later stages pose some serious challenge. I had fun with this one, well done and congrats on making it!

cassowary 2023-05-11 18:24

This is cool! I appreciated some of the subtle things like the fine control over jump height and the fact that the sides of the spikes didn't kill you. There were some collisions that felt a bit weird, and it seemed a bit strange that you could walk off the left side of the level (on level 3 I think this actually made me win, which was strange as well...) I also wish you could see the level numbers in the actual level as well. Other than those minor things though, this is a solid classic-type platformer. I always appreciate a good series of single-screen challenges. :)
