Nice! cool twist

senso 2022-10-03 20:35

Like the game you somtimes feel like you make it intro the save zone but got killed . Finaly Made it without reset throug.

Great game love your backstory!

foulkes-art 2022-10-04 20:38

This is one of the most creative concepts for fitting the theme I've seen. Nicely done!

jonathang 2022-10-04 20:55

I persevered and managed to complete it! It's a good use of the theme, and although it's galling to fail to reach the safe zone at the end, it's not too much to have to go through it again.

kostas-nik 2022-10-04 21:17

i really liked the mission briefing sound guy, pretty proffessional sounding, the 10 second theme is well implemented, the movement is kinda slow. I would add some Quake bunnyhopping just to fill time between resets and maybe some platforming.

james-joubert 2022-10-04 21:26

@kostas-nik I would've loved adding a bit of verticality to the game. Some jumping puzzles would've been awesome. Might actually still add this in at a future date.

simba 2022-10-04 22:27

Very cool use of the theme and a 3D game to boot! I love the backstory of it being set in a computer simulation. It was very easy to pickup and understand the glyph system, and the controls were nice and intuitive. My only critique is that I wish there were checkpoints so that I didn't have to restart from the beginning- it's a very punishing game!

thedude3600 2022-10-04 22:30

Fun game! Cool idea - it was tough but it just made me want to keep trying. I did run into a weird drift issue where the character would just start slowly turning, not sure what was causing it but my controls all seemed to be working ok. Good Job!

glacian 2022-10-05 01:19

Great game!

Only concern was my mouse was _super_ sensitive and at one point got stuck endlessly rotating

james-joubert 2022-10-05 09:28

Thank you for the kind reviews.

@simba I thought about doing check points, but I also wanted the game to be tough. If the game was longer or had more levels, then checkpoints would definitely be required. Luckily once you've learned from your mistakes it gets a lot easier after that. Kinda took a bit of a souls like approach for a puzzle game.

@thedude3600 I had a quick look into the issue and found the problem. The rigid body wasn't locked on the Y axis, so rotating quickly would create some velocity that continues after you stop moving your mouse. I will try to fix this today and release an updated build.

@glacian Thank you for the input, I should probably add a Settings menu that allows players to adjust this.

deltamain 2022-10-05 14:50

That was fun! Interesting idea representation, I liked it alot

shuimen 2022-10-05 14:58

Nice work and good level design!

misterstripey 2022-10-05 15:56

Hey! Was great playing this on stream. Here's the VOD link that will be up for a week or two: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1609990150?t=00h00m57s

I loved the general mood and ambience of this one. I would have loved to have some checkpoints because it felt brutal to have to start over all the time, but again, I think the restarting helps with the puzzle I was stuck on so I'm not really sure what the best solution is there. The minor mouse-look bug could not stop me from trying to get as far as I could! Once that puzzle was introduced I got real interested in trying to figure it out.

james-joubert 2022-10-05 17:13

Fix the below bugs on the itch.io page.

@thedude3600 I fixed the rotation drift issue. @glacian I didn't have Time.deltaTime as part of my rotation calculations, so people with beefy PCs will be spinning like crazy. I fixed this.

Thanks for all the feedback.

balduin 2022-10-05 19:01

Really nice game with good level design. The only problem I have with it is the mouse sensitivity.

vkaike2 2022-10-05 19:14

Great game, but I think that it would be better if it was third person, instead of first person, but this is my preference not that the game is bad in this way, and the mechanic to find a safe spot is great.

james-joubert 2022-10-05 19:28

@balduin just uploaded a fixed version for this.

@vkaike2 I did consider this, but I'm a sucker for FPS games

robobarbie 2022-10-06 05:32

this was really fun! i loved the tense feeling from the spoken countdown the nice lighting as you ran through -- really added to the atmosphere. nice job!

etrealjunior 2022-10-06 13:25

Congratulations for the game, it makes me sad that I can't do things fast, not because of the game but because I play these games very badly lol, great game I had a lot of fun, my congratulations, a big hug.

house-trap-charlie 2022-10-06 13:30

Props to the use of audio in this game. Good use of the theme. This is an entry that stands out :).

djtequila 2022-10-06 15:01

Cool game! The music and countdown really set the mood. The puzzle was neat too. Some interesting movement mechanics could have been nice, but good job!

james-joubert 2022-10-06 15:17

Thank you @robobarbie, @house-trap-charlie, and @djtequila for playing my entry.

I really appreciate the kind words, and I'm happy to hear that you enjoy it.

trusty 2022-10-07 01:37

Great job, had fun figuring this one out.

simono 2022-10-07 10:50

Great use of theme and really enjoyed the challenge! The voiceover for countdown is super effective.

crotonyl-alcohol 2022-10-07 12:03

Nice game! I would've finished the game if I don't get sick from first perspective 3d games. I get back to the initial starting point if I die... Ran out of patience and started to feel dizzy. Personally I'd appreciate a few savingpoint.

someone 2022-10-07 16:25

Nice game. The voice over was great, and the music really added to the mood. The timer makes the somewhat simple puzzles significantly more challenging. Starting over from right at the beginning was annoying, especially the first time you encounter the unexpected pitfall as there is no way to avoid that without foreknowledge. The intro suggested that things in the world would be rest, which they do not. Movement is too slow for anything without holding the sprint button for the entire game. I couldn't get the web versions to work.

someone 2022-10-07 16:25

oops - double post, website was being unresponsive.

nick-gozak 2022-10-07 19:49

I feel like a speedrunner after completing this puzzle XD Really nice job.

I like sounds and the idea itself. Maybe it lacks some mechanic like "take item - place item" to add more diversity to the game. But the game is fun and challenging. Cool.

sturza-anzor 2022-10-08 19:54

very nice game

tommy 2022-10-08 20:26

@james-joubert the game doesn't load (neither the embedded version nor the one on itch.io), I'm on Linux using Chrome as a browser. Error on itch seems to be related with brotli compression, if that could be of help.

Let me know if you manage to fix it, I'd love to give this game a try.

allie-vera 2022-10-09 02:20

Brutal and entertaining! The game was the perfect length to justify lack of checkpoints. Great work!

hengen 2022-10-10 13:55

God damn that was hard, but so so satisfying to complete. Good work!

kaech 2022-10-12 10:24

Very cool concept, I think the checkpoints should have been made after each room. There was nothing chellenging with walking through same room over and over again, just very repetitive. Otherwise it's pretty good idea and I had a good time playing it.

james-joubert 2022-10-12 18:13

Thank you everyone for playing my game, I really appreciate the feedback.

The game was designed with the intention of being reset from the start of the game, otherwise the last puzzle would be very difficult to figure out.

If the game was any longer then I would've made a level based checkpoint.

The idea was to make a Souls-like Puzzle game... if that's even a thing.

@someone "The intro suggested that things in the world would be rest, which they do not." Good point, I should've worded that differently. The entire level resetting could've actually been an interesting feature though.

@tommy It's quite a large game being 3D, and was mainly intended to be downloaded. I realize that only people that have really good internet are able to play it in the browser.

tommy 2022-10-14 15:54

@james-joubert thanks for the response! Btw, today I tried it and it worked (not sure if it was a different version, or my connection was more stable than the other day).

The game is a pretty interesting take on the theme, although a bit punishing in sending you every time all the way to the beginning. The places in which you fall through the floor are also a bit tough to see the first times, and the mouse sensitivity could definitely be brought down a bit (or at least made configurable). Loved the voice counting down, it helped a great deal in setting the right atmosphere and in pressuring the player. In the end I kept playing for quite a while (even though I was clearly progressing very slowly), which means the game did it job pretty well. Nice done!

cedric86 2022-10-19 20:02

Well done. There are some cheap deaths but that's part of a game like this. Enjoyed playing this one very much. Great entry.
