I like cooking

tomga 2022-10-05 12:56

Super fun game! I really liked trying to find out all the recipes, although it was really confusing at the start. Very solid artwork and music. My only complaint is that there is no way to trash dishes. I got stuck multiple times, just because I didn't have a place to put my new food, as everything was full of foods I accidentally made.

bangkerpow 2022-10-05 13:05

I really respect building good scalability into a jam game.

razor-zorax 2022-10-05 13:06

love the art style and music but was really confused with how to make some of the dishes/drinks in the beginning.

hydezeke 2022-10-05 13:06

I was also confused at the start but it was really rewarding to find the different recipes! Really great time management game! Good job adding so many art assets too

branquelo 2022-10-05 13:09

The only problem to me in the game is that i have a little hard time figuring out how some parts of the game works. I understand what you said about "we, players, figuring out as we go", but sometimes this can make the player not enjoy the game as he should. When i understand what each thing are, and how to do it, it became easier. The only thing that i didn't figure out was how to mix lettuce and tomato, before i could, the game crashed on me. I tried to click with the lettuce on the thing on the right of the blender, and it crashed.

Besides this point, i really liked your game, it reminds me a lot of other games like this, but the way you play is simpler, but it works pretty well. I think this game has potential to grow! Well Done!

jejkobb 2022-10-05 13:13

This was a fun game. Feels like you got so much made in such a short time, I'm impressed. I really like the idea of controlling the waiter while also making the food. Sadly the game crashed after I tried to click on the stove after picking up an egg. Not sure what happened there. Anyways great game, good job!

twowolf 2022-10-05 13:39

@jejkobb @branquelo Oh no !! I just replayed it and you're right, I NEVER tried inserting my egg into that empty stove! Oh goodness... there's a bug every game that just evades my attention. Luckily I already know what the problem is, I accidentally made it a kitchen layer object and gave it a utility script without having other necessary components, otherwise it really shouldn't throw like that.

Oh the humanity, just when I thought I finally made a bugless game, no sir, there's always one in the end. Thank you for the notice, I'll upload a hotfixed Entry version as soon as I can.

Meanwhile, don't try to put an egg into empty stove people. I'm so sorry lol

edit: I managed to fix the crash and a couple of other minor bugs. The game is safe to play now!

edit2: I also added a spoiler tagged guide for per suggestions that the game can be a little complicated. Thank you for rating my game everyone!

I did it!! I got rich!!

First of all, thank you for leaving such a nice comment on my game. We certainly had completely identical ideas! So as someone who made just the same game I know just how complicated the programming can get. I'm thoroughly impressed with what you accomplished here as a 1 person team. A job well done and a huge kudos to you! I think you have a fantastic game on your hands here, and I enjoyed playing it start to finish.

I think the big issue with the submission is the lack of clarity for certain game mechanics, which makes it very difficult at a first glance to figure out what is interactable and what isn't. I personally had to stop playing twice and read and re-read your description to figure out just how to play the game. But once I figured out (somewhat by trial and error) what was interactable and what wasn't, the game truly opened up and felt amazingly fun.

With that said, I myself received so much feedback that people had no idea what to do with my game at first that I had to patch it to include an extended tutorial. But I think you and I know that it wasn't that we didn't think to put a tutorial, there just simply isn't enough time in 3 days to pull it off haha. So honestly, I think your game is just 5 stars in my book. Thank you for making it!

twowolf 2022-10-06 04:06

@jag Thank you so much, this means a lot coming from you. You're right, I did initially want to cram a lot more in and one of them was a tutorial which was, as you said, not something I can fit in a 3-day time scale. But maybe I also make my games a little too complicated for my own good, it's one of the issues I always face.

Anyway, enough about my game. I did realize there was an original version, and maybe it's because I already finished the game, but it wasn't that much different! So in my eyes you totally deserved my 5 star ratings as well.

I really do want you to win this round, you deserve it!

thedashdude 2022-10-06 05:23

Nice work. Kinda nice to experiment and figure out how things work. I became rich. Washing the dishes after bringing them back seemed a little excessive, especially because the dishwashers were my cooks.

chase-of-bass 2022-10-06 07:24

I admit i went back and looked for instructions after clicking around a bit and then read and liked and agreed with what you said above about the experience of figuring it out -usually prefer that approach to games too and it worked here -was pretty easy to figure out and really fun! The art is nice and made it easy enough to determine what i was supposed to do. Awesome work on this!! :D

mar3k 2022-10-07 16:53

As a big fan of plate up, I have to say I really enjoyed this game. It's nice controlling multiple people and the art is really nice as well. Although a small tutorial at the start would help a lot. Well done.

twowolf 2022-10-07 17:07

Thank you for playing my game everyone!

I think this is about the right time to respond to a few of the crucial feedbacks. So as people already said, this game could be in need of a tutorial. I did put a guide up at the beginning of the post for those who need it, it's a clunky process I know, but that's the best I can do without uploading a post-jam version. Maybe I'll get around to it someday, unfortunately I have a habit of not expanding on my Ludum Dare games until much later.

@thedashdude Yeah, I kind of expected this. It's not a mechanic you see anywhere else, it was an experimental try on my part too. But honestly I just thought it was a fun gimmick to try programming.

@tomga Oh oops I forgot to respond to this comment, yes you can wash anything in the sink even raw ingredients, not just empty dishes. I'll put this up in the guide.

@chase-of-bass Thank you for enjoying the experience!

asfdfdfd 2022-10-07 17:09

Your art playing on my nostalgic strings.

twowolf 2022-10-07 17:22

@asfdfdfd Yup! My childhood directly hits the S/NES era bullseye. Kinda shows doesn't it

But I do want to try out drawing one day, if I get better at it and have the proper tools

i-wrote-it-myself 2022-10-07 17:22

This game is a lot of fun and the music is amazing! Well done!

voidsay 2022-10-07 17:43

The game idea is good, but for some reason the "each action takes 10 secods" didn't really work. Maybe it's a bug or something, but most things were basically instant, which lead me to just assume the role of one of the staff members, click a bunch and go to the next staff.

Experience overall was chill enough. Didn't have to go ape to win, which is definitely a plus.

Only thing that really annoyed me is that the thinking bubbles covered the server almost completely.

twowolf 2022-10-08 15:09

@voidsay Oh, there's a timer at the topright counting 10 seconds. Any action, no matter when it started, will finish once that timer hits 0. Theoretically you can use this to finish all the minor chores first then start cooking/washing at the last moment. You were actually very lucky since most of your actions started near the end of the timer, that's why it appeared to finish instantly. Also waiter actions finish instantly by default.

Yeah, honestly the thought bubble got in the way of my play too so it was definitely a concern but I had no time to think of some other way.

holyperson 2022-10-08 21:04

Really addicting and fun game,Visuals are great, my only annoyance is when i accidentally click on fridge or vegetables, i can't close that panel without choosing either of the options. and i can't easily get rid of an item that i don't need. Other than that Great Job! I've Loved it!

phoenixofforce 2022-10-09 11:44

Very nice game, although a little hard at first. Nice entry!

jonah 2022-10-09 15:14

I had a nice time figuring out this game!

Love the sprites (the tools look interesting too!), chill tune and sfx and good gameplay loop.

I can imagine a post-jam version with maybe more dishes to make, different customers and a different size of level/team(more or less cooks/waiters).

Really good job for this entry!

idenoh 2022-10-10 21:39

I rich, yay! Overall I enjoyed this game, the limitations in the kitchen and the dining room made it really stressful, I liked the fact that we had to choose where we put plates wisely so we didn't end up with a counter full of dishes and nobody to grab them. Great entry!

sephowepho 2022-10-10 21:54

Really really fun! I did have to read through your notes to understand how to play the game, but afterwards, it was super easy to enjoy ()! The game has very charming graphics and audio, along with a simple yet replayable game! I wish you could more than 3 items on the counters, and I think this would work better as a high-score style game rather than just *"play this long"*; but otherwise, I don't have any complaints! I just think those small changes would benefit it!

Overall, this is a really solid submission, keep it up!

sohei 2022-10-11 12:25

Yep, this is a fun game to play. A bit plain graphics but everything is understandable and creates perfect mood for the restaurant theme. A bit harder challenge would profit the game. The main obstacle it the learning curve, and once you get it - it's an instant win.

twowolf 2022-10-12 04:57

Thank you everyone for playing my game!

@sohei This was initially my expected response. It can be very easy once you know what goes where. Originally there was going to be multiple levels and unlocking upgrades like normal tycoons with a tutorial at the beginning. Really naively ambitious now that I think about it..
