Fun little game! At some point wolf stopped to fear fire and step into my fire =) Overall very fun to play

This was fun, like a really tiny survival game. Good implementation of the theme (and this would have been a good idea for "Keep It Alive" from a few LD's ago). I wasn't quite sure what the icons under the fire meant, I assume they were related to how quickly the fire would burn. Great job!

fun game, nice pixel art, would be cool to see on a small handheld device.

scottgoldsmith 2022-10-03 17:41

@thegamearchitect Thanks for playing! Definitely considering expanding it some and possibly releasing on Android! From the Itch.io page you can load and play on any device with an internet connection! It has built in mobile controls.

Kind of a low-res survival horror in the stone age. I liked it! Like another commenter mentioned, however, my wolf did eventually walk through fire. An idea for future features if you end up expanding it - the ability to light more fires?

I like that there's an inbuilt pacing to the game where you rush around during the day and hang around the fire at night, which gives some tension to the night time. It would be good to make the night slightly shorter, and give you slightly more to do during the day, to add some extra action and tension on top of everything. I like the art style of the game a lot, and I would totally play more of this if you expanded it. Thanks for making, I enjoyed it :)

Really cool idea loved the graphics, the UI (little dots) and the feel - it was kind of tense having that tiny pixelated wolf hungrily stare at me for so long. Liked the lack of music at night added to the mood. Some sort of tune during the day might have been good though.

Nice brough-like! Good setting and mechanics for it. The mixing of time and steps as mechanics was a little tricky - maybe if you keep pursuing it, just have a "wait" command to help pass the time? Very nice start to a tiny little strategy game. Nice job.

Fun little survival game. Took me a while to realize that I was supposed to just sit still at night. The wood hacking sound was super satisfactory!

stuffedgravy 2022-10-05 04:58

My first round in and I tried to pet the doggo, I guess I'm not cut out for surviving in the wilderness :D

I had a couple good moments of tension where I was kind of far from the fire gathering wood and it turned to night, I think with some tweaks to the wolf movement that could turn into a real sense of panic as I try to reach the fire before the wolf gets me.

I found the UI tracking materials to be handled well, the carry limit was intuitive and easily understood thanks to the dots.

Fun little game good job

What I liked: - The minimalist pixel art (so cute) - The simple gameplay

Improvements: - I noticed a bug where the character can go outside the map. - And a bug where the wolf stop fearing the fire. However, I was not able to catch the reason of this behavior.

Good job !

... and well done with actually creating a mood :thumbsup_tone1:

purpledartfrog 2022-10-05 15:21

Very nicely done - simple concept that was easy to get in to. I loved the art - this actually drew me to your entry. You did what I ALWAYS forget... stick to a simple concept. The aesthetics was well-rounded. The audio fit perfectly with the visuals.

Very cute little game, my only complaint is that even with instructions it seemed a bit confusing at first. But after you understand what to do, it's a satisfactory experience.

Nice retro-gaming vibes!

I found it quite difficult to know when the night was coming which lead to countless night of feasting for the wolves... Also a tiny detail that surprised me at first is how easily the wolf go literraly trough the fire to catch you even though it is supposed to be afraid of it. A minor detail but it still surprised me a lot at first.

I wasn't expecting to see a PICO-8 game! Nicely done! I love the concept and the game is nice and simple. A little harsh at first but once you get the hang of it, quite manageable! I love how the fire actually changes your range of vision depending on how much fuel it has at night. A very nice touch!

scottgoldsmith 2022-10-06 17:26

@sarah-alexa Thanks! I'm not sure how many people have noticed the fire vision at night feature, but really glad you picked up on it! Thanks for playing!

sarah-alexa 2022-10-06 17:51

@scottgoldsmith I had a similar thing with my game in that there was a little nice to have feature that I think one person called out but beforehand I'd thought had gone unnoticed! I love small touches like that!

Happy to as well! I've peeked my head in at PICO-8 but I've yet to make anything in it. I think once I'm more comfortable with traditional game dev I'll be on it as a fun side thing! Such a cool platform!

pretty cute game you made! you deserve credit for building for all pc platforms as well as the web! you'd be surprised of how many people don't build for web even if they're one click away from doing so! the game is simple yet fun, and as a fan of pico8 I think you did a good job with the art and sound effects, great work!

serxiolas 2022-10-06 21:41

Nice job! Like the concept very much! I didn´t understand the core mechanic until I read de description. Easy to play!

Nice and minimal game. It’s very cute and I liked the little story

Hi, I came from the "3 Underrated Games" post! :)

Wow, I loved this game. Even though this is a tiny, pixel-art game, I actually felt shivers go down my spine the first few times I got eaten by the wolf. Later on, when I finally realized that you're supposed to stay near the fire, I felt very tense & nervous with the wolf staring right at me. In short, it's really amazing how effectively you've created mood with such a simple art style. My two main pieces of feedback:

1. The icons below the fire weren't very clear as to what they were. 2. Some kind of visual indication that you've over-fed the fire would've been great. Currently, it's not clear, and there wasn't a strong noticeable difference when I kept feeding the fire vs. when I kept it at a moderate level (which sort of defeats the purpose of that mechanic).

Lastly, not feedback but an idea: it would've been cool for the sun to "set" so that a few seconds before the night came, you could see the sky change color. I think it could've contributed to the mood while also giving players a small signal that they need to hurry up.

Otherwise, this was a fantastic entry. It's simple but very well-executed, and I'm so amazed, again, by the mood here. Congratulations :) Also, I'd really appreciate if you could play my game as well! Any feedback would be much appreciated.

jamdong15 2022-10-08 06:57

Also, as I played the game more, I learned that it's good to keep a few pieces of wood in your pocket during the night to keep it going :) That was pretty cool.

A fun, simple game. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it. One way to improve this game is to add a score, perhaps based on time. That way, I can measure my progress. Also, it would be good to add some variety to the game — music is one way to do this, as well as changing environments. Overall, however, I had some fun with this game.
