I never saw a monster, and I couldn't figure out how to do any crafting. It was VERY menacing though, so great atmosphere.
Interesting game - looks like a lot of thought went into the crafting system and that was well implemented! After 400 seconds in the maze, I wasn't ever able to find a monster, so maybe tuning up the encounter rate somehow would be good! Great atmosphere!
@fromage Thanks! I realized quite quickly after putting in the map it was WAYYY to big. The crafting instructions are in the description, but a tutorial would have been great to have! Thanks for the feedback!
@jonl13 Thanks for playing and the kind words! Our 3D modeler had a computer meltdown so the map that was meant to be used wasn't ready in time. I agree though, way to big of a maze.
I liked the atmosphere the audio gave me, some unfortunate bugs(?) did occur where it seems the monster only starts moving once you get close, either that or it was stuck in a wall. There were also some camera clipping issues and I would have liked to be able to move diagonally, but all in all a good show for your first time in an engine!
I enjoyed the atmosphere, the movement and the sounds, but I couldn't figure out what to do... I moved for about 300 seconds and didn't find anything ;-;
@settings Yes there is a bug with the monster. Unfortunate timing! uploaded the wrong build :(
I loved the ambience/mood of this game! The dark hallways and the ominous music really made me feel like I was running for my life. The fact that you don't see the monster right away but you can hear its footsteps adds to the claustrophobic feeling. Also, the speed boost potion was really satisfying and fun to use.
Some things that could be improved upon:
The camera was consistently going behind walls making it really difficult for me to see where I was going. I ended up getting turned around and lost a bunch of times from this happening.
Some landmarks like trees or rocks would help give the player points of reference when navigating the maze. Right now it feels like you're just running aimlessly.
The item menu is a little confusing and it took me a while to figure out how to use it. I would put the Useable Items descriptions on the itch page so people can find out what the items do.
Great work!
@sjpixels Thanks for the feedback! We agree with pretty much everything you said. The map and maze were a last minute thing and it is unfortunate that our forest map wasn't done in time due to complications.
Just in case someone else sees this, recipes will automatically be available when you find the resources. Use E to craft and F to use. Z and X move the selection left and right respectively once items are available to craft.
Thanks again for playing!
Cool! Loved the atmosphere. found the monster at about 280 seconds. Caught me at 330!
@etchell haha thank you! Glad you liked it.
liked the music, only saw one monster after quite some time, camera needs a bit of work, whenever you turn it clips into the wall and you can't see anything.
So there I was running around aimlessly for 10 minutes trying to work out what I was doing, and from out of nowhere I got a proper jump scare from the monster XD
The atmosphere and music made it feel like a classic horror film.
This game has lots of potential but I didn't see any enemies and so I just pointlessly run around the maze and gathered items (maybe it was bugged for me?). There was a red fog kind of thing that appeared every now and then but I didn't understand what it's doing. The graphics were ok, maybe using a texture for the walls would've make it better (just a very simple one). Other than that the game was still enjoyable, had an interesting idea and the mood was good!
The was pretty fun, collecting stuff is always a good time!
@perion Thanks for playing! Our 3D artist's computer had a meltdown. The map that was supposed to be used had to be cut in favour of this map I made in blender in 5 minuets. Unfortunately, as a programmer and not a designer I was unaware of truly how long it would take to trverse a maze of this size. Thanks for playing!
@wobbleblocks Don't forget crafting! Thanks for playing!
Amazing Sound design, really added to the eerie atmosphere, I could have preferred more in terms of gameplay, all I was doing was just gathering items around, nothing really at stack, maybe you could have added triggers that served as alarms to notify the monster to get some action going quickly, otherwise great effort.
@justmicthedev I had the idea to make the monster travel towards you faster when he was out of line of sight or far enough away about 5 minuets after I submitted the game. Definitely going to make updates to the map and monster in the future. Thanks for playing, we both really appreciate it!
good
My final time was about 493 (might have misremembered the number). After like 7 minutes of walking around and crafting stuff, I ~~finally managed to find~~ was found by the monster. Then I ran around some more, used the speedy potion for a good measure, crafted and used the squeaky mouse (which was apparently a toad) and died in the blast - I am the master of my fate, and it's also up to me to end it so foolishly. Death may be inevitable, but getting killed by monster isn't. ;)
So yeah, I won't be original in saying that it took quite a lot of time to even find the monster at all. ^^' The crafting system was perfectly functional, though I was pretty clueless how should I actually use the items (the healing potion was very straightforward, at least). The maze felt a little monotonous - I don't even know whether or how much I was going around in circles, having some characteristic spots would be nice. I'm not saying the game should take place in some fair (though I guess Five Nights at Freddy's did a nice job using usually cheerful elements and building horror elements from that?).
At any rate, the game had some proper unsettling/tense mood (with graphics and music alike), though I wish it had more visual variety to break the monotony of running through the maze. One last thing - way too often I found myself seeing through the walls when I got close enough (especially around the corners); maybe it's got something to do with camera or such?
The atmosphere is really stressful, that's cool ! But I didn't find the monster, too well hidden
Waited for the monster to kill me, accidentally killed myself with exploding toad. Had a great time.
Ha ha, played it a few times and didn't see the monster then suddenly he was round a corner, gave me a heart attack lol. Really enjoyed the atmosphere of this game and the audio worked really well. One thing i was not sure about was the red box that seemed to appear round the level at times. Great game though thanks :)
Damn that was menacing. Tensed up every time I turned a corner. Lasted about 500 seconds though before I died though!
I found myself running around the maze for way too long before I saw the monster. It did feel like it would be just around the corner, but eventually the tension died out and I assumed the game was just glitched.
The problem with horror games in mazes is that if you're just waiting for a monster to appear, you never really feel like you're making progress. Its just endless running through a maze and waiting. I think you could remedy this by adding like safehouse mechanic. You're running through the maze collecting items trying to make it to a safe room while knowing there's some monster out there trying to kill you.
It gives the player something to do and raises the stakes by having the player risk losing all their progress if caught by the monster
I love the menacing atmosphere. Found tons to things, but didn't realise there was a crafting system until reading this page after playing. Played for about 10 minutes and didn't see the monster. I eventually hunted it down but it killed me before I saw it properly so I *still* didn't see the monster. It would have been better to not cut to the menu instantly on death. The red plane that sometimes appears was confusing, and the camera clipping through walls was annoying. Great entry though. I enjoyed playing.
Amazing how one can produce such a menacing atmosphere with just a quiet music track a maze and a monster where you can never be sure about when it appears. Had to search for it too! But i think it scared me even more when it found me than it would have normally. Great game!
Pretty good atmosphere and well implemented crafting system. I couldn't actually find the monster though.
