Great idea and well executed. Both parts of the game was entertaining, even if it seemed 50/50 with the card game. I liked the 2D lighting and shadows.
I really want to love this game, the concept is really well thought out but you're right about the RNG. I played quite a few games and it was physically impossible on the first turn. The "game" part of the the entry felt way too hard as well, but maybe I just suck. Overall this was still a really great entry, loved the card art.
Just a heads up — on a macbook here and a lot of UI elements were clipping off the edges of the screen.

This is such a great concept. The card game part especially is a lot of fun and even just with a few runs I got to see some clever combinations. It looks great as well, really nice spritework here. Would be very interested in playing something like this if it made it to a full release!

I'd like to try it, but unfortunately on my Windows laptop a large portion of what I should see doesn't fit in the screen. The resolution is 1366x768, if that helps.
Great looking game! Overall it could use some more balance, the extreme rng feels quite bad if you just start playing and luck is against you.

@brachistosauro Thanks for letting me know! I just realised at the end of the jam that I hadn't considered different resolutions, so I just hoped it scaled good enough, but it seems that all UI elements are evaluated in the amount of pixels, so unfortunately it only works on 1920x1080, I am sorry that it is unplayable for you! But it is definitely a good learning outcome for my future projects to take this into account.
@midblue Also thank you for letting me know about this! Could you let me know what resolution your screen is? Then I know if it is a resolution problem or that it is platform related.
@agent-p I was thinking about the healing as well, I decided to add cards that have a healing bonus with the idea to add an extra layer of strategy, but obviously it is quite RNG dependent now (it happens quite often that there are no healing cards dropped at all). Other ideas I had were to either have another enemy type that dropped health instead of cards, or to have the option to trade in cards for health. This way there is still some strategy involved but then it is hopefully more of a gameplay decision than an RNG outcome. I would love to hear your thoughts on this!

I always love a hand drawn game, so props for the art! The concept and theme interpretation was SUPER cool, I really enjoyed it, but you didn't let the player use it to its fullest extent!
The mage part of the game was super hard, and whenever you die as a mage it completely ends the game. That sucks! It locks one of the funnest aspects, the cards, behind the difficult mage combat. Being able to respawn after death would instantly add enhance the gameplay. Instead, try having the game end whenever you run out of excuses to play.
Phenomenal concept though, I'm excited to see where you take this in the future

I recorded myself playing, message me on the Jam’s discord @ Dark Peace and I’ll send it to you. I really liked the idea of using RPG card in real life, it's one of my favorite concept in this jam. But I got a bug, after my first run, I couldn't kill any more mages. So the game just became insanely hard. One thing that would bring the game to another level would be controlling the randomness, for example : giving more "resotre health" cards when the player is on low health etc

This is sick! I found the dissapointed mom card very funny during the playthrough haha. The art/graphics in this is sick aswell as the lighting, and the controls feel super nice and fluid! Definitely a really good entry, especially for a one man team, and for a first game jam!
Nice one, huge congrats on your first jam!! The art, design, and audio were very well put together. The difficulty might have been a bit on the hard end, at least for me. I was rarely able to get a clean hit on the mages without them hitting me back.

For a first game jam this is incredibly impressive! The art style is really cool and I like the concept of mixing the action-adventure with a card game of sorts. I feel like you were probably a bit ambitious with the scope which happens to everyone in the beginning. The card game was a bit confusing for me and as you mentioned the card drops might be a bit too RNG. But I can definitely relate with the story (not necessarily the essay but any other kind of work)
The concept is really cool, I think you could really go deeper into it, I'd play a full game about that!
Well, balancing is something yes. Maybe some deckbuilding on a later stage too but that's a lot of work. Instead you could go for unlocking new cards and make it more of a roguelike game. Also that area attack from the mages is very annoying, maybe make it a bit smaller or slower.
