I got to 27 and probably could get more. For the scope of a compo entry amazing game! 10/10 would play and jam to the awesome music again.

Fun :)

The art is very cute, and the music fits pretty well. I was able to get to over 50 by simply moving back and forth on the light-squares. For me the ai only added dark-square bishops, perhaps something could be added to have it add equal numbers of light and dark square bishops?

Overall, I like it :)

@kory Yeah, that's right, I tought about the dark and light squares balance but forgot about it, will add it for post-jam version. Thanks for the review!

This was great! I love the concept, and had a fun time with it. And the music was boppin'. Wonderful job!

Lol this game is so relatable to anyone who plays chess. I like the art you used and the overall experience of this game. Also, big perk, I love you can play it on the mobile.

Maybe implementing a system where you can't kill yourself by placing the king on a square the bishops are already guarding.

I absolutely love the way this game throws you into "end game," right off the bat, and gets you thinking; wonderful game!

eboatwright 2022-04-12 16:36

Awesome! I love chess, so this was fun  I love the graphics, and the overall style of the game and it definitely deserves more ratings!

Really cute game, loved the graphic style and the music. I found a bug where none of the bishops where attacking me but I lost due to checkmate.

I like the tone and art style, though it was a bit noisy to look at for an extended period of time. I enjoyed playing, but I also felt like I didn't have a lot of agency—by the time the bishops had covered all the dark squares, I didn't have much recourse to defend against the light-squared bishops, so I didn't feel too invested in the quality of the moves I was making and found that moving between two squares diagonally was as good a strategy as any. Still, it was a fun bishop study, and the AI is clearly intelligent enough to play well. Nice entry!

I like it! It gripped me from the start. I think it could be even good for training the board vision for chess. I got a good score because the AI wasn't too bright and gave its bishops away, but I think it's a good thing, since it's satisfying to capture a bishop and the player will die anyway.

One thing I would change - even though it's not chess so it doesn't to be this way, but still, I would differentiate between checkmates and stalemates :P Like the situation on this screen, according to chess logic it would be a stalemate:

Overall, very good entry!

Nice weird chess variant. You can get by for a long while by just sticking to the minority tile color of the bishop patrol - I got to 97 just by staying on white tiles, the AI didn't seem to like moving his white bishops too much. I like the shaky graphics style, but it can become tiring on the eyes after a while.

Lasted 51 turns in my second attempt. My strategy was trying to stay in the center and threaten the bishops as much as I can to force them to move away.

Update: Lasted 191 in later attempts

Fun game and really cool concept. The graphics look great, and the audio is good (especially the piece sliding sound effect). The biggest issue I have with the game is that it lets you move into check, causing instant defeat unlike in normal chess. But the concept is really cool and I'm interested to see how the AI works.

This was a super cool concept that fit the theme well! Only issue was I was able to move the king into check, which ended the game. Graphics and Audio were great. Overall a great entry that you should be proud of!

Nice game! As a fan of chess, it was fun to play. Good job.

kjscott 2022-04-18 10:01

I had for a moment wondered if it was possible to "win" the game after capturing a piece through a bit of luck, then more pieces started to spawn in and it dawned on me I was going to lose... Nice game! The only thing I would mention is music just ended at the end when it's been played just felt a little sad. Would have been nice if there was some music inbetween since it was nice to hear.

I loved the graphics and the concept. Too happy every time I kill crazy chess, I feel like I won a battle
