Hah, we had similar idea  Wish I had VR headset to try it out
@gummibot Yes I knew that it would be hard for people to try it out but I really wanted to give VR a go! I'll be sure to try yours out though
Neat little VR game, glad I actually had a headset to try it out. It was fun running around throwing uranium into the box and refining. I like the responsiveness of the buttons too, good entry! Shame not very many people will end up playing given how inaccessible VR is.
What little I could see looked cute and the audio was nice. Sad I can't play it without VR. You might consider putting up some boilerplate next time that has VR + mouse and keyboard hooked up so you can get the ground running if you do VR again!
Hi, I'd love to try this, but I couldn't get SteamVR to recognise it as a VR game - it just shows up as a desktop app for me. I've added the executable to my steam library but it still doesn't seem to launch within VR. Is it exported as an OpenXR game or something else? Is there a step I'm missing?
Thank god I have a vr to test the game. At first I thought it was a pain to put the headset on to play a game, but it was worth it and it was fun! so thanks for doing it! Im also trying to start making games for the quest 2 to was great to saw an entry like this! Will follow you to check your next projects
Hey, thanks for sharing! I'm playing your game now on stream. See timecode 20:00 https://youtu.be/euv3GH5eSOo
I have no headset(((((((((((((((
@incobalt Thanks for giving it a try at least, I'll be sure to at least add the basic movement with keyboard + mouse next time.
@jordwest I might have missed something when compiling it, I probably only did it for the Occulus. What kind of headset do you have? I'll try to patch it for yours
@mrventures Thank you so much for playing it! I can't seem to check your video out though, I think it might be private
@luquio I'm glad you liked it! It was my first time doing a VR game, kind of daunting at first but Unity XR is pretty straightforward to setup. Don't hesitate to checkout the source code!
this seems interesting looking into the comments, any web or mac version?
@velvetlobsterI didn't try to build a web version, I wasn't sure it was possible for VR but I'll try to do it tonight, I'll let you know!
It is not easy to make a VR game especially in 48 hours so good job! Controls are nice and gameplay is simple but fun.
Ooo another VR entry. Hope this one is gonna work through SteamVR with my Valve Index- will have to check this one out soon. You should really tag your game on itch as virtual-reality and ludum-dare-50 haha, I thought mine was the only PCVR entry for a bit!
Edit: ah dang, it doesn't like SteamVR :( Well, my entry works with any headset through SteamVR, hope you'll give it a go!
(I'll grab your source code and make it work for SteamVR myself tomorrow)
Edit2: Couldn't resist and had a quick look, all I had to do was swap out the Oculus UnityXR plugin for the OpenXR plugin which supports a lot more headsets, and it "just worked" after adding the interaction profiles for the different controllers
I forked your game and comitted the fix, feel free to pull it into your source or make the changes yourself if you want- it doesn't break Oculus support.
As for the actual game, you have some fun "my first VR game" interactions here, does seem like you kind of ran out of time and had to rush the graphics together though, but good effort! I liked the refining uranium bit the most as it's a multi-step interaction.
Props for attempting a VR game; that is not an easy task in a game jam! I was unable to play it, I tried the fork from @shadowbrain but couldn't get it to pick up my controllers (also using Valve Index). This looks like a cool approach to the theme, good luck with future development!
It looks so good! I really want to play it! I'm going to try to get one VR glasses!
VR during a game jam, very ambitious! :)
@smilewood you likely have to set SteamVR as the default OpenXR provider somewhere, it popped up as a complaint for me to either ignore or accept on SteamVR so not entirely sure where the option is
@shadowbrain Dude so cool that you took time to patch my game! I'll definitely pull your fork as soon as I have some free time today! Thank you so much these interactions really are the best thing about ludum dare
@jordwest @smilewood With the help of @shadowbrain I released a patch on itch.io that should work correctly with SteamVR, it seems to be correctly recognized by it on my end. Also the red buttons weren't working, that is fixed as well
Thanks for the patch! I remain impressed by your even attempting a VR game in a game jam, and this one is well put together. Perhaps my favorite thing in it was the enriched fuel rods, they glow so invitingly and therefore were fun to grab and ~~throw around the room~~ carry to the fuel pipes. The various tasks seemed to be on reasonable timers, not so frantic that there was no way to keep up but not so long that I didn't have to think about them. Interaction with everything felt good with a minor exception of the microwave door grab points feeling awkward to me. Overall impressive game jam work, and a fun little VR project. Great job!
The fact that you attempted to make a VR game for a jam is insane! The premise of the game was pretty fun and I thought it was a great take on the theme. Well done!
Damn, I could barely finish a 2d game and yet you made a super cool VR game in the same amount of times! Great job !
I can't imagine making a vr game in 24hrs! Really awesome job! It was fun!
First VR game that I tried and one of my favorite entries so far! Loved the little buttons and switches, but it was bit confusing at first on how to make sure it doesn\t explode (thought you would have to balance the meters somehow). Great job!
Congrats on 20 ratings! I still need a couple to get there... hoping I can.
Anyone with VR hardware- please give my game a look! :p
@shadowbrain thanks! I already rated yours, its really good! All VR interactions feel great and those fluff balls are super well done. If anyone sees this comment definitely give this game a try! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/herdey-vr-only
@legolula I also converted a couple Compo entries with source posted into VR entries, given the lack of VR entries this time around it seemed appropriate :stuck_out_tongue:
So if you want to try a couple other games in VR there's a blogpost on my feed about them.
Just got around to playing it with the patch, works perfectly now (I'm running a Quest 2 via Virtual Desktop). Thanks for solving the problem @shadowbrain!
Some thoughts: - The glowing refined uranium looked so cool - The physics were a little jumpy, and when I dropped the instructions they fell through the floor - It was immersive enough that I actually jumped when the reactor exploded haha - Movement felt a bit frustrating and slow, but I guess maybe that's the point. Was wishing I had teleportation, but that would also change the balance of the game.
Amazing work building a VR game in 48 hours, and I'm happy to see you've hit the min ratings. I think you've inspired me to try doing a VR game next jam :)
