Good job! :) I think you made a even more diffucult than me!
I think rotation of sprite when you walk back is not good idea. 98% of time it's instant lose if you accidently pressed "a".
Other than that, great work!
Hahah yeah @vasuka we actually debated that a bunch, but wound up leaving it the way it is to make it a bit more of a challenge. Definitely need to have some sort of compromise, I think, though.
Challenging game, but I like it!
The bright colors and cheerful atmosphere invite you in, only to break you down, and break your heart, I mean your egg.
Man, the egg really needs to transfer with the pan when you flip from left to right. There's nothing wrong with a challenging game, but at some point the difficulty weighs down the fun. I got stuck on level 2, and I have no idea how much more there was, but I just couldn't clear it. I like the artwork, and the quotes when you die are fun.
A very fun game, but the egg really needs to stay in the pan while turning... There were also a few other collider bugs, typically when walking uphill - the egg would break when the pan touched the ground tile. Maybe this is intentional, but it was very frustrating to deal with. I found the best strategy was just legging it, and just hoping to catch the flying egg at the end :D
Loved the attention to detail though, great quotes, crisp and crunchy eggshell sounds, and physics simulation on the broken egg all make for a very immersive experience. Well done!
Great presentation and funny menu screen! The quotes are very much appreciated! And for the turning issue, maybe the player could walk backward instead of turning around?
I'm a big fan of die and retry games. I cracked my head to finish all your funny level. It's a shame that the dinosaur gets stuck at platform's border. Egg/20
Great Game, but as mentioned, the egg should have stayed in the pan while turning. Also I dont know if it was intended, but you could "throw" the egg into the fire and still technically win (but it should have shattered). Lives the Dinosaur!
This is fun. I enjoyed it very much. It was humorous as well. The only issue for me was when you have to change direction the egg falls out of the pan. But I figured it out. Good Job!
Fun game but feels unfair whenever I need to go back.
Thank you so much for playing everyone! The egg and turning was a sticking point for us as a team during the jam too. @raph-gi which border do you mean?
i love it. i find the challenge welcoming
great idea, but turning around instantly drops the egg out of the pan, no good! i'd rather have no ability to turn around it all, than for it to be an instant-lose button.
the walk animation is crazy unstable. the walking physics is also interesting, it seems to track some kind of momentum, which resulted in me getting stuck at the bottom of the ramps several times, which was frustrating, because i would have been able to catch my flying egg if i hadn't gotten stopped on the ramp.
there were a few times where the tiny gaps between the tiles became visible, resulting in glitchy (unstable?) looking visuals. maybe put a very slight overlap between tiles? (like, have the tile size slightly smaller than the sprite size)
i made it to the fire, but my egg fell into the fire, and i still lost :(
i liked all the egg related quotes, added to the charm of the game.
@sakura-magika Just wanted to say thanks for the most detailed feedback yet. The movement was kind of an experiment in using force instead of controlling velocity for extra physics fun so there are definitely a few problems with the slopes, on the other hand the vectors aren't normalized either so you can do some insane jump and trick shots if you hit the slope just right to get a speed boost.
The concept is cute. However, when turning around, drop egg, instantly lose. Touch large floating egg which I assume was a checkpoint, nothing happens except frying pan changes color. Then frying pan touches ground on 1 pixel of edge of hill, egg breaks, instantly lose. This is very much a rage game, which I do not enjoy. However, the quotes when you die were kinda cute.
I enjoyed the 5 levels! A pleasant surprise that all of them had their own music! Excellent work! It was really fun playing with the physics and how the egg can touch you in any way but never the floor! I played a lot of egg volleyball.
Egg is good, good work!
Very good game, nice music, cool idea
One of the best entry I played!! Your idea is so great. Very good job.
So, I finished it, I think! Is it finished when the music stops and no new level starts? I think it's a lot of fun, although it took some getting used to. I kept trying to play it careful but it's really necessary to headbutt the egg around. Some of the levels have blind leaps in them which I am not a fan of. Nice music! The graphics are a little inconsistent, i.e., mixing pixellated with non-pixellated sprites.
I disagree with those complaining about the egg not staying when you turn. I was surprised by it, but eventually I realised that in some levels, using a fall to safely turn around is part of the challenge. I think it's clever.
Thank you for playing everyone!
It took me a while to get started, but once I realized the best strategy is to have the egg in the air as much as possible and headbutt it along, it became more fun. Unfortunately, I found myself frustrated most of the time, where it a lot of the failures felt unfair, or that I had to do too many things perfectly in a row without any checkpoints.
I don't know how many levels there are, but I stopped on level 3. I could get all the way to the end, but just not make the final jump. It felt like the only way I'd be able to do it is just play over and over again until I got lucky with the physics, and by that point I had already got past the point of being fed up.
I'd also echo some of the sentiments about turning around being a death sentence. I think it's fine to leave the turning in, and even leave it so the egg doesn't follow. That third level definitely uses that for an interesting challenge. But also, I think there needs to be a way to recover from that, because right now even if you can catch it facing the other way, you might as well drop it because you're stuck.
Overall, I liked it more than I expected I would. It felt really good to beat the second level. But I went away frustrated, which generally isn't a good thing.
I really love this kind of game :) I'll add another vote to the idea that turning around should carry the egg with you, and would have loved to have seen more fun powerups but the music and atmosphere were rad. Nice work!
I made an edit of my playthrough and put it on YouTube, for if you wanted to see the exact moment the game broke me
Were there any more levels?! I felt like I was so close - but I just couldn't after that

Bopping music and vibrant art. I found the game challenging in a fun way.
I agree that being able to recover from turning would be nice.
Overall an eggtastic entry.
Thanks to everyone for playing Egg Racer! @joeshanahan There are 5 levels total. I really appreciate the youtube playthrough! It made me laugh watching your egg cracking montage and it definitely gave me better insight to see how other people might approach controlling the game, which I probably didn't think about enough because this was my first game jam. Thanks again for your video and tenacity in level 3 lol
This game triggers my "Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy" PTSD.. so thanks for that.
Great game, but you're all terrible people for making this :P
This was a really cute game with good simple gameplay but done well! I know you've already had it a lot and I can tell it was a hard decision for you to make but I think just having the sprite facing forward at all times would have been better so you can still go left to catch an egg without insta failing... Other than that, The graphics and music came together nicely to create a chill atmosphere and the sound effects were nice although I would have like more so that the game had a bit more feedback.
The game looked great and well put together and the little animations of the eggs to collect and fire etc meant it didn't feel too static but more alive. However, I did feel a bit distracted by the walking animation. It was possibly a little too quick and jerky in contrast the the smooth movement of the egg. Maybe try slowing it down but that's a very minor detail!
I can see from earlier comments that there were multiple levels which is nice although I have terrible coordination so rage quit quite quckly although the addition of the funny quotes was great and added to the replayability. They kept me trying a few more times just to read them!
Overall, really well put together entry feeling like a full, polished game! Congrats!
Edit: just went up to do star ratings and loving the egg pun titles!
