This is a wild achivement. I think idea behind this game is something special and worth a deeper dive. The music slowing down adds so much!
Yes
I don't exactly know what I played but I think I like it! Good job on music that brings a great mood in your game, nice visuals: it looks like a weird dream so if it's your intention, it's pretty good job. Maybe some feedbacks would be nice to understand what we have to do or juste understand where we are in the game progression.
What a stylish entry! I loved the audio here, and the graphics are perfect for the concept. I wish it was just a bit easier, but maybe I had a harder time with it than most.
Brilliant take on the theme, and nice nod to Inception! I've struggled a bit to manage the amount of sedative to go relatively deep, but I love the mechanic, and how we need to balance it so we can keep "invading" targets without being forced to leave a dream.
The sound design + music also help a lot to create an intentionally weird atmosphere. I liked the small guided meditation at the beginning to introduce you to the game, I could even leave it in the background now to prepare to go to sleep myself.
Really original entry, congrats!
PS: Thank you for playing our game, I hope you enjoyed it! :)
@meeblyglort thanks, I didn't model the train station but hopefully it was pleasant for more than just that :)
@mrchambers very much appreciated, I am polishing it up and adding in a few things to release once the jam is over. soundtrack by the brilliant Sonny Wong!
@giangero And how!
@duck-reaction I'm glad you think you liked it :P Soundtrack was by Sonny Wong, and it was fun for me to program how the music pitch shifted and faded in different tracks depending on how deep you go. Was indeed meant to look like a weird dream, so thank you! Did you watch the How to Play? It's included in the Windows build, but also there's a link in the description for people playing the webGL version--- it's just a high score game, keep going deeper, nothing fancy!
@aidanmarkham Thank you very much for the kind words. Soundtrack was by Sonny Wong, which I then just pitch shifted based on level progression, then faded in the orchestral version as well. And yea, definitely gets harder and harder!
@ithildin thank you very very much! yea, it can be nearly impossible to maintain once you start falling back. maybe rage quit genre? :P I'm glad the mechanic was clear to you, I worked very hard to make this potentially confusing game as clear as possible. Seriously, thank you for all the kind words. If ya dug it, keep an eye out for a version with some extra goodies once the jam is over next month!
once i got to level 4 i couldn't move and ammo kept draining by 5 or more each level. but the idea was pretty cool. Wish i could go deeper but the movement lock forced me to go backwards. Did i do something wrong?
This is a really cool take on the theme, and a very off the wall mechanic too that was fun to play with! Definitely fits the theme well, and is oddly satisfying to roam the level, strategically charging and firing the sedative at your target to maintain the sleeping timer. It's a little like dream Hitman- there's a fun frantic feeling of scouring the level for the target after going one layer deeper. I found it really funny after my dozen attempts that the first red person was riddled in sleeping darts, haha. Overall, nice work!
On one level I was suddenly very fast, while having regular tempo before and after that, a bug I guess? Sometimes the blue npcs dissapeared for a few seconds as well.
APART FROM THAT I really loved the game, I have a soft spot for these kind of weird 3D games, and the graphics and music complemented the gameplay really nicely. Would love if you fleshed out the gameplay even more in the post-jam, because it's a really great concept.
Well done!
@whysguy52 hmmm not sure why you couldn't move, this is the first time something like that has been reported, thanks for the heads up, I will keep an eye out! If you're playing in browser, perhaps you clicked out of screen or tabbed out or something? Hard to say without having been there! Or were you playing the downloaded version?
@brandon-orden wowwowo thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you got that frantic feelings, I very much enjoy making games in which your palms get a little sweaty. Also yea the bodies riddled in darts also get me too 😂😂😂 thanks for playing and if you're interested it's likely I will be releasing a version of this with a little more polish and new features sometime next month!
@okamit yea kind of a bug, the "running man" pickup usually needs you to press the shift key (which isn't said anywhere, my fault) but also sometimes automatically kicks in if you go up or down a dream. The blue NPCs disappearing however is supposed to happen, that's another pickup which helps you find the target more easily but at the expense of being able to collect more sedative/pickups. I've heard some other folks being confused by that as well, maybe I should add some kind of effect to make it more clearly intentional. I am very glad you were able to enjoy yourself and thanks for the kind words!I am indeed going to be releasing a more polished version with some more features sometime in May, so keep an eye out! Thank you!
A lovely idea, however I struggled to maintain sedative, I would fully charge sedative on one layer, and end up with no way to replenish sedative due to the sedative count ending up @ -1 on the next layer - meaning I had no ability to harvest more sedative XD. Might have been worth adding some form of melee knockout for blue bois to prevent completely running out - unless this is by design, if it was by design - might be worth mentioning you need to keep an eye out and not use all your sedatives.
Interesting idea with the concept giving strong Inception vibes.
I liked the menu with the voice over & cinematic intro, it had a nice vibe. Also, the slowing down effect every time we went deeper felt good. Being able to go inside the trains or in the small tunnel below the tracks was also nice to make the environment not too small. The 3d stickmans also ended up working pretty well to show the crowd in a minimalistic way with gameplay-related info being instantly visible through their colors.
For the downsides, the way we lose sedative upon going depper into the dreams felt a bit weird or bugged, as you would sometimes lose all your sedatives upon going further or even getting to -1 sedatives, at which point you wouldn't be able to do anything except wait for that dream to finish. The train station is big yet only a small area of it is being used in the gameplay, and it would have been nice to search around the target instead of finding it instantly everytime because all the stickmans are in the same place anyway. Also, it felt like there were no max range for throwing sedatives at people, so we could just snipe around without moving (except for getting powerups & munitions from time to time). Also, a nice thing in the menu could have been subtitles as a lot of ld jammers aren't native english speakers and it's easier to understand a text than a voice.
Still, an interesting game with a nice mood & graphic style, though the gameplay is a bit simple.
This is gold. From the perfectly voice-acted intro to the gameplay that at first was confusing but naturally began to make sense to the innovative graphics - a combination of immersive sets with simple NPC models that made the mechanics of the game intuitive (not to mention the detail that you could see more and more sedative shots on the first red guy) - to the fantastic score - which even slowed down with levels giving deeper and deeper immersion - to the theme thoroughly incorporated into the game. Sound cues on entering dreams, getting a powerup, and perhaps playing with that ambience from the beginning fading out as you go deeper are all that I can think might enrich the audio. Graphically, maybe a GUI for powerups and a light outline to make them more obvious when they spawn. Oh and I forgot to mention the best part of this game: it's fun!
I hope you win something for this. With multiplayer, I could see this on Steam. 10/10
This is a really cool idea! I really like the inception like gameplay mechanic and it's so much fun! It has a lot of potential and can be developed further. Like others have written new levels or even a multiplayer would be so coool :D Thanks for this game and experience, great game!
I first tried to play this game without reading the instructions and was extremely lost. After a second try it was quite a bit more immersive. Very cool inception concept.
BTW, the title screen was very ASMR for me.
It's a too bad that getting to the deeper levels of dreams, I quickly become stuck with no more sedatives. The game starts out great, the How-To video is very well done and the visuals are very cool and surreal. It's a shame none of the UI elements are drenched in the same atmosphere as that title screen. The voice work and audio were also a nice touch. There's a really fun idea here that could be pushed a lot further for sure.
Very impressive sound and voice acting!
Interesting approach to the theme. Great job!
