I was surprised to see a Zero review game with such polish; you gotta update your Thumbnail and the likes. The visuals aren't necessarily anything special but are very appealing and above all cohesive without ever getting in the way. The music is jamming and the gameplay itself feels good as well. Which makes it too bad that my run ended with a crash:

___________________________________________ ############################################################################################ ERROR in action number 1 of Create Event for object obj_cs_nextState:

Pop :: Execution Error - Variable Index [-1] out of range [96] - -1.arrWorldGround(100114,-1) at gml_Script_generateVolcano ############################################################################################ gml_Script_generateVolcano (line -1) gml_Script_scr_start_gameState gml_Object_obj_cs_nextState_Create_0 gml_Object_obj_e_boss_Step_0 (line -1)

Another crash happens when you fly left at the start, but that's more funny than problematic.

mr-field 2020-10-06 20:53

@peringo ah dammit, i've thought i've fixed that volcano bug like 3 times already and it keeps coming back

thanks very much for playing anyway, you got pretty far to get a crash like that!

I liked your game my congratulations, I also did one if you want to know, and give me your feedback I am very grateful, this is the link https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/resurrection

Wow, this is actually very good game, Idk why is so underrated, good job guys!

mastoast 2020-10-07 18:02

Really good entry, you did a good job with the old-school arcade style, with great music too. The game was a bit too fast for me when the boss get halfed-hp, , but i spend some good time with your work.

fatalcaca 2020-10-07 18:33

Really nice and polished Simple and classic but very good gamefeel Great job really

wrimo 2020-10-07 18:35

This is great. The amount of polish is super impressive. I do think the game is too difficult (at least for me). At the start of a round the screen is already full of enemies and obstacles to avoid. This is probably intentional, but I found it a bit overwhelming.

Wow, fantastic game! I love everything about it - very cool graphics, music, lots of unique enemies, and awesome dynamic gameplay with cool upgrade system. It really keeps you playing until the end.

The game was a bit difficult at first, but then it just started to rain scraps at me, hundreds upon hundreds, I could easily upgrade my ship to the maximum capacity and buy an insane amount of rockets, which made it a lot fun!

My only critic is that the controls are a bit difficult, the ship moves too fast and too smooth. But it adds some fun challenge I guess, so not necessarily a bad thing.

It will be awesome if you release a Linux version, I would like to keep this game in my native library!

This game is amazing, you've captured the mega-drive feel down to the awesome music, colourful sprites, smooth controls.

r2d48 2020-10-09 16:51

Excellent game I really have fun playing it 1 hour to defeat the Boss.

acsid 2020-10-12 01:21

Really nice game fun to play.

capt-theo 2020-10-13 17:53

Cool game, it's great tribute to classical retrogames, but with more bright colors and much more happening on the screen, so we could call it fantasy about what retrogames could be if you timetravel :) You even used right font. Game is difficult at first, but feels very smooth, so clearly with some practice it can be beaten, especially when you learn some patterns or learn what upgrades do. Good job!

figueroass27 2020-10-15 01:20

Although the concept isnt the most original THIS GAME IS FANTASTIC, i love the retro design and everything about it. Can i ask how you made the music, especially in such short of a time?

mr-field 2020-10-15 20:31

@figueroass27

ty ty! billy can't access his ld account so i'll relay his thoughts:

"The music was done in fruity loops, with some sega megadrive soundfonts and samples mainly, and some free vst oscillators. With Robin focussing on the programming I spent the whole 3 days on the music. The sound effects were made in the crunch time in the last couple of hours."

simplepotential 2020-10-15 21:08

Wow, fantastic entry! I may have to come back and try to beat it when I have some time :)

flying-cat-of-the-pepes 2020-10-15 21:45

Super fun and the art's fantastic! But when I land on a platform and it brings me to a screen where I can buy upgrades for scrap, I couldn't figure out how to leave that screen...

mr-field 2020-10-15 22:01

@flying-cat-of-the-pepes

ty ty! you just have to press the bomb button (default X) to leave the upgrade menu

geckoo1337 2020-10-15 22:14

Amazing game which reminds me The Gates Of Zendocon on Atary Linx or many other games on old computers. Controls work perfectly and I love this 80' years aesthetic. Clever way so as to manage theme. Impressive work. Maybe it could be better playing with a joystick. Well done and polished ++

garys 2020-10-15 23:17

WOW!!! I can't believe you guys got this done in 72 hours. There's so much to it!! The movement of the ship is perfect, the enemies and bullets insanely chaotic to dodge and hit. I love the upgrade mechanics spanning multiple playthroughs and the graphics are superb - they appear lo-fi, but really good use of dithering & flashing, particles, etc. The whole thing is so well polished, I'm really impressed. Oh, and the music is fantastic. Did I catch a nod to the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme tune in the boss fight music?

I don't know about the difficulty curve though - the game was basically impossible until I had enough points to get the 'points > scrap' powerup, and as soon as I did I could just buy all the upgrades and keep myself alive... I went from not being able to beat the first boss for the first few games, to completing the game on my next turn. Then again, that may have been deliberate since you want people to get through the whole thing in a fairly short time. Other than that, this game screams out for controller support.

One of my favourite entires so far. Nicely done. I hope you expand this into a full game. I'd buy it.

ismael-rodriguez 2020-10-15 23:50

Very good. My 1 nit-picky complaint is not starting the game with rapid fire, and not knowing about the upgrade until 10 minutes of smashing the fire key lol, for real thats it, your game is awesome!

I can tell you makes games! :sweat_smile:

empty-set 2020-10-16 02:15

Excellent game. The movement was at just the right level where it wasn't too easy but didn't feel frustrating. I like how fast you can go if you want to. Maybe it takes *sliiightly* too long to slow down after you've been going really fast, but then again that being true dis-incentivizes zooming around all the time which might be a good thing.

Being able to buy upgrades with score between plays was cool, though I didn't explore it much. I just bought the 'increased starting HP' one on my second try and managed to win.

I think extra lives were maybe a little bit too cheap to buy; once I got the upgrades I wanted and could spend all my scrap on lives if I wanted, I felt like I wasn't really in any danger of losing. More weapon upgrades might've been cool too.

The boss fights were pretty intense. It was fun to have to go from chasing the boss down to turning around and running for your life when it decided to change directions. The last phase was a lot of fun - I liked the surprise change in the boss's design - gave me Sinistar vibes. By that point, I had a good enough grip on the controls that dodging his big red attack was doable but still hard, which was rewarding.

The graphics, music, and sound effects were all great and polished.

I think you successfully distilled the fun and charm of old shmups without getting bogged down in some of their more dated mechanics which can make them frustrating today. Overall, really great work.

corrupt-spaghetti 2020-10-16 16:24

I absolutely loved this game. Controls were great, and the sound design an music fit perfectly. I'll probably play more of this game in the future lol

trexxak 2020-10-19 23:54

The music just keeps you playing and playing and playing! :D

Really appreciate being able to change the controls! What a nifty quality of life feature you implemented there! Talking about controls, handling the ship feels slick and satisfying! Especially loved how smooth and relatively undangerous it is to visit a shop!

Super fun game!

garys 2020-10-28 00:03

Good to see you did so well. I really enjoyed this one!

mr-field 2020-10-28 00:57

@garys tyty!!
