The camera felt too close to the character, I took a lot of damage because of that. I liked the narrative and the music

matlab 2020-10-08 13:14

I don't know if I missed something but once I don't have a tap anymore I don't know what to do... except commit suicide in the monster's mouth... Moreover I had a text that was incomprehensible ducktape.jpg , maybe I have to do something with it? I don't know what to do... Thank you all the same for this game ! I like the graphics and the fluidity of the visual elements.

Nice entry! I really like the recoil of the duck tape gun. The story and graphics are also nice! I would just have liked to have another default attack in addition to the gun, as I always ran out of tape ^^'' Overall, good work!

catomag 2020-10-08 13:20

The background lacked contrast with the foreground which made it hard to tell what was going on. I liked the character animation, very cool. I liked the monster/demon designs, very cool. The best part was definatelly that killer ending, very very cool.

samuel-hollywood-summers 2020-10-08 13:20

The recoil on the gun wasn't enough to get out of the pit. I started again from the beginning and had the same problem. It didn't feel good to run into such difficulty so early on in the game. I don't know if your parallax is working the opposite way to how it should do on purpose (some sort of spatial distortion due to the 'rift' mentioned?) or if this is a mistake, but it was distracting and disorienting. Let me know if there is something I'm missing for the problem of being stuck in the pit and I'll try again.

moddingmachine 2020-10-08 13:21

@matlab I think that that bug happened when you progressed and entered another bit of dialogue while another was still playing. Working on a fix soon!

Overal, a cool idea for a game. I like the gameplay elements that you guys put in. I really like using the guns recoil to jump higher. A bit buggy from time to time, the parallax is a bit too intense for my taste and the ammo system is kinda annoying. A restart level button would've done wonders. Graphics are neat and I like the cuteness that comes with wrapping things in ducktape :)

moddingmachine 2020-10-08 13:25

@samuel-hollywood-summers Oh yea the parallax is backwards XD, in the bottom of the pit you might need to jump and shoot down to get enough recoil to launch yourself out. Aside from that... If you die you get a little bit of ammo if you ran out previously. Thanks for the tips and suggestions!

The idea and narrative were cute. I liked how the pipes in the background move when you move your character and the sound effects when I hit something. However, after I shot my first two spiders I fell into a hole. I thought maybe I could get out Spiderman style but the duck tape just stuck to the wall. Then I thought maybe I could climb up the tape and shot more at the wall, didn't work though. Then I was out of tape... Nothing happened... So I reloaded, went through the narrative again, got stuck in the same hole, and eventually got out jetpack style. Since you were so good about explaining the controls before, a hint and a tape refill would have been nice there after some time has passed, instead of making the player reload everything.

I enjoyed going through the different rooms, and I chose to press the button on the "do not press!" panel xD I had some difficulty understanding how to use the recoil to get out of the room where you have to use it at the beginning, but otherwise it went fine. Having infinite lives that reload the tape gun is indeed quite useful. ... And nice work on the background parallax, it looks cool :)

fun game with a lot of detail, stylistically reminded me of some DOS-era platformers! felt a bit of nostalgia there ^^

tiny bit of constructive feedback: making the backgrounds darker relative to the foreground would help a lot, initially it was a little confusing/distracting visually. also, disabling colliders on dead enemies would help since in small spaces the large sprites can make it very difficult to hit the enemies that are still alive.

great job overall :)

nicksmaddog 2020-10-10 00:25

This was a lot of fun! In the beginning it was pretty difficult to see between the background and foreground, but I got used to it after a while. Good job!

fabula-rasa 2020-10-10 00:44

That was wonderfully ridiculous. I really enjoyed the setup and the ending. I also enjoyed dying over and over in the pit, so I can climb up over the bodies of my previous selves (*insert evil laughter here*).

The gameplay was nothing revolutionary but it was totally okay. Shooting felt fine and responsive, so did movement.

Graphics were okay but the color scheme was chosen a bit poorly. By that I mean that our hero had a very similar color palette to the background environment. And that's not very good for the player's brain ;). You could keep the backgrounds and dress your character in dark greens, blacks or deep violets.

I enjoyed the music, I think it fit the game well.

And, last but not least, I got me a bug (and I don't just mean the spitting spidery creature). One text box got stuck on my screen and stayed all the way till the end cutscene (when it was finally "killed" by the endgame text box). And not only that - the text box degenerated to half gibberish  Screenshot_3.png

moddingmachine 2020-10-10 17:26

@fabula-rasa I'm going to work on a fix for that gibberish right away XD! That is a pretty lame bug, I'll also try changing the brightness of the background parallax to add more contrast.

mcovert 2020-10-10 20:52

Recoil was pretty interesting. First room where I found out the door was locked I had like 4 monsters almost on top of me when I found out, so that was kind of an annoying surprise - letting me know in earlier rooms would have helped - eg, have a loud 'unlock' sound when the last monster dies in each room, or have the last monster drop a key, with a key-in-lock sound for when I open the door. Parallax was also pretty noisy - I feel like if it had scrolled a lot less it'd have been way less distracting.

lyrcaxis 2020-10-10 22:25

I loved the theme implementation xD Good job.

100th-coin 2020-10-14 05:32

I like the characters art, but the background was a bit trippy. Just a heads up, with parallax, you want the back-most layers to move the slowest, not the fastest. Also the background should generally scroll slower than the foreground. The effect that scrolling the background like you have makes the whole scene appear to rotate around the y axis and it can be a bit much. I like the story and your take on the theme! Well done!

the-missing-bracket 2020-10-14 10:58

the background parallax confused me, nevertheless good game

moddingmachine 2020-10-14 14:03

@100th-coin thank you for your input, I knew something was up with that parallax and I could not quite figure it out. The tutorial I was trying to follow wasn't working so I tried another one (because I have absolutely no experience in parallaxes) and merging the scripts is I think what caused lots of strange issues.

loveapplegames 2020-10-16 20:34

Good job! This game is very complete, with a lot of content and attention to detail. It could use some polish here and there, most importantly in the gameplay. Interesting idea of having a gun recoil, but overall, the platform action was too easy. Killing most enemies was also easy most of the time, with a few exceptions.

masterkrepta 2020-10-24 01:11

The game itself was very fun. The parallax was a bit of an issue, It started to mess with my vision for a minute. The effect also made the platforms and gameplay element very hard to see. I think some more contrast between the foreground and background would be a huge improvement.
