I never did like escort missions >.< Solid mechanics. As frustrating as the slow turns are, they definitely make things more deliberate and thought out.

thatothernerd 2020-04-20 02:14

https://ldjam.com/users/curiouslycory I decided to make a lot of it slower because if it was all faster it would be too easy to approach the enemy and aim at it, but with it slower you have to think about what happens if the enemy gets past you.

igizzy 2020-04-20 02:43

The controls were just too slow for it to feel right to me. Also most of these games have the expectation that holding down the fire button will keep the guns going. Maybe change it from on key up to just on key press. loved the sprites, they were amazing!

blackopsben 2020-04-20 02:45

Dude this is sick! Some sounds and music would take this a long way, but what you have is on to something great!

binroot 2020-04-20 02:47

Making it slow also adds to the seriousness, which is cool!

dave-follett 2020-04-20 02:49

Great job! It was fun to play. The explosions were great. I might lower the music volume a touch.

thatothernerd 2020-04-20 02:50

@blackopsben For some reason, the unity website defaults to muted... But it is there!

tattomoosa 2020-04-20 06:01

It felt a little bit too slow. I thought the handling was okay but I would prefer if you could build up a bit more acceleration before topping out. I got 2863 points.

thatothernerd 2020-04-20 15:43

@tattomoosa I think for the post LD version I will change the way that the camera works and make the plane go faster with more room to travel...

nick-rafalski 2020-04-24 15:48

This was fun. I like the simple graphics and sounds that come together to make a retro feeling game. I don't mind the slow pace of it, I think it makes it more strategic. I do agree with another commenter that the user should be able to hold to shoot. Especially if the gun can fire that fast and enemies need many hits to kill.

Overall, it was a fun game that had all the necessary features (menu, win condition, lose condition, score, etc). Great first gamejam game!

thatothernerd 2020-04-25 21:46

@nick-rafalski Thank you!

diegoctorguet 2020-05-01 16:17

I just read that this was your first jam so congratulations for that! The rhythm of the game feels kind of slow for what I would expect from the art, but I got some fun destroying the other planes. Keep on it!

ixio 2020-05-01 17:19

Great job for a first jam ! It's kind of funny though how the enemy plane has the same color scheme as our allied bomber while we have a different one, at first I was a bit confused as to why I was controlling the enemy plane .

thatothernerd 2020-05-02 22:44

@ixio The reason that the planes are different colors than what makes sense, is that I was looking for planes that could fit in this situation, and I found the BF 109, B-17, and the Spitfire. When I searched for reference images, the main color of Spitfire that I could find was silver, so I made it silver.

garys 2020-05-02 23:37

Not bad for your first jam. I kinda liked how slow the planes turned, made me try to think ahead a bit and also gave a sense of panic when you realise you're not gonna make it... like watching a slow motion car crash! I think the collision boxes seemed a bit big, and it could have done with some feedback to let me know a bullet has connected. Perhaps some kind of energy bar for the enemies.

aaron-taube 2020-05-02 23:38

The slow movements struck me as a really interesting choice, though it feels very much like you can only do so much to help your bomber. I wonder if you could keep the game slow, but do some visual effects to give you a sense of speed.

artemftw 2020-05-03 00:05

Great entry! The game is pretty fun and the art style is nice. The movements are a bit too slow though, and the explosions look odd. Also, there didn't seem to be any sound.

Overall, it's a nice game, well done!

bulent-altinay 2020-05-03 00:11

Great game! Really like the controls. Feels like playing a flight sim! Game mechanics is good. Needs some polishing I think ( better graphics and music ). But you have the foundation : really good gameplay . Build on that...

landosilva 2020-05-03 00:17

Very good first jam game! The concept and gameplay is solid though it has a lot of space to improvement and polishing. Other comments already say pretty much everything so I wont be repetitive here.

Congratulations for your entry and keep working! Don't stop here!

chrissimas 2020-05-03 00:32

Great first entry! :) Movements are indeed a bit slow, but it didn't bother me that much. It's amazing that you did it all by yourself, you should be proud

bongobongo 2020-05-03 01:08

Saw your post and came here, great concept bro. Spent a bit time to adapt on the controls, but pretty fun game! If you got time, could you rate mine? Cheers. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keep-it-alive-30

meelo 2020-05-03 02:06

It took me a bit to figure out the controls - especially, as others have noted, that holding space bar doesn't fire, but also that you could fly through the escort and that the red % thing was the enemy health (maybe better to use a health bar over the enemy for this?). Once I figured these out, the gameplay felt plenty smooth, though. I definitely had fun playing this, though I think there's a lot more opportunity with this mechanic - even just zooming everything out and increasing the speeds might help, since it'd be nice to have a challenge of "oh, this plane is approaching in this direction, I need to be behind it" rather than just "oh, I see bullets, better point my gun towards their source - and hope it doesn't start doing damage before I had a chance to react" - a bigger field of vision could also work well with expanding the content to include more threats (e.g. multiple enemies at once or multiple types of threats) to allow more strategizing. It could also help to create a bigger sense of movement - not just in terms of speed, but to use the idea that the bomber is itself moving to your advantage - maybe to make it more like "if you want to get further behind the bomber, don't go straight ahead" instead of "turn all the way around to go back", which might lead to more interesting gameplay and work better thematically (plus: it adds the option of "turn all the way around to go back **really** fast - maybe *too* fast"). Nicely done for a first jam.

thatothernerd 2020-05-03 06:14

@meelo The idea was that you could fly over the bomber, and that the enemy could fly under it.

frank-gevaerts 2020-05-03 17:25

Not bad! Sound didn't work for me on firefox on linux, but it did work on the chromium that I have installed as a fallback. I initially thought it felt as bit sluggish, but I think I agree that making turning faster might change the game too much. There could be some more polish, but 48 hours isn't a lot, so well done!

spacewizardj 2020-05-12 07:35

CONGRATS on your first Jam! I remember mine like it was... well it was a long time ago! I hope you're proud of what you made!

Ok I may have run into issues but on Chrome: - I couldn't shoot all the time and when I had the sound on, I would hear the shooting sound but no bullets. You may want to look into Unity's collision system and do a few experiments for fun and education. It can seem daunting at first but if you set up different collision types and make projectiles that are physical, use raycast, etc, you'll learn a lot so it won't be so daunting. - I played until my score was 3000 and I never saw any enemies. I stopped playing at this point. Did you revision the build? Chrome problem?

I really like the relative controls. It means you'd have to plan your moves ahead of time. What did you think of the tone of your music? Do you think that maybe in lieu of music, some propellers and gun fire maybe could have helped the mood more? Sorry I had so much trouble with your game. I really would like to play Part II in the next jam. That would be awesome if it fit the theme!

thatothernerd 2020-05-14 00:37

@spacewizardj 90% of that must be a chrome error lol
