Could not open it.

"Application folder: C:/Temporarios/Jogos Ludum 46/RebootingFlowers There should be 'RebootingFlowers_Data' folder next to the executable"

phpgator 2020-04-21 04:14

Same issue as above. Sorry man

yyz 2020-04-21 04:16

You need to clean and name your build folders properly. I've only managed to play because I'm familiar with Unity and renamed your data folder so that I could play.

Anyway, about the game, I think it could use a better designed tutorial. The UX feels bogged down by the long, unskippable dialogue. Especially since I had to go through it twice after the game restarted at random at one point when I approached the wall, and couldn't skip it even though I've already gone through the "tutorial".

I also personally find it breaks my experience when the game constantly interrupts me with dialogue and takes away my control. As a game designer, you should try to minimize these occurences. People don't like having control taken away from them every so often.

I didn't get far enough due to the above issues, but some suggestions would be to have the keyboard controls/instructions appear when you get near the water tank/seed dispenser, as a world UI instead, easily done with triggers. By the time I got to the next step of the game, I already forgot the shortcut keys, and whether I have to use spacebar, or left mouse, or right mouse.

Considering the game seems to have some depth in its mechanics or gameplay, and a number of interactions, you should try not to make players memorize shortcuts especially since there's no on-screen button/instruction.

It was a confusing experience which is sad beacuse it looks like a unique game and growing flowers seems like it could be a cool concept to explore.

Nonetheless, all the best to your game! :)

Nice idea. Pretty impressive for your first game tbh!

I also find it ruins the flow of my experience when the game interrupts me with dialogue; I loose control. Also, it would be a lot better if you could add some controls pop up when you get to things

nathan-wiles 2020-04-21 04:35

Really unique idea for a game! I'd love to see more to this. The flower growing effect was especially nice. I would have liked to have been able to move around while the tutorial dialog was playing, but it was well written and funny, so that helped make it more palatable than it normally would be. Great job on this!

jerm 2020-04-21 05:01

I was able to get the game to run by renaming the LudumDareFS_Data directory to RebootingFlowers_Data, but I couldn't get past the first section of the game. I was able to grow the flower but when it got to the section of dialogue about the "Tree_Server" it would go back to the main menu.

Anyway, I thought the dialogue was amusing and it sounds like you have a unique concept, so well done on your first game :)

dreamcastgh0st 2020-04-21 05:18

I really like your dialogue, it has a lot of personality. I was also able to open up the game, despite issues early on, and I really like the visuals of it (although they are incredibly simple, they remind me of games like vertex dispenser.) The dialogue is fun and unique, and I would _LOVE_ to play through this game fully! However, in the first area, it randomly reset itself TWICE, and at that point my patience was running thin and I stopped. I would really like it if you made a fixed version of this, after the jam, so I could play through the whole thing!

haoro 2020-04-21 11:06

Thank you all for your comment ! As a beginner, im not familiar with event so blocking the player movements was a way to make sure all the dialogue shows up before another event trigger when you get close to an object or do a specific action. I'm going to check up online how to implement that better so you won't be stuck in here for so long ;)

Also, thanks a lot for sharing that RebootingFlower_Data, I'm going to make sure everything run properly and go smoothly !

mickgerritsen 2020-04-21 14:08

Very good first game! Wanted to be my first game. There are still a lot of issues in the game, but don't let that bother you, for a first game and also in a Ludum Dare this is great. Have fun while learning to develop games!

madewink 2020-04-21 14:19

Lovely game. I did not go really far but it was pleasant to play. At first I did not see Flo's water bar, and was not sure how much I had to water it. Careful, you say in your tutorial to use ZQSD (the french keys), but I had to switch to QWERTY, since you use WASD. I loved the humor and the bit of lore that was presented. :purple_heart:

hexa3 2020-04-21 15:03

I'd like to see the final version of this game!

haoro 2020-04-21 16:57

@mickgerritsen Thank you ! I'll continue doing my best in that way and seing your comment motivate me even more to do so !

@madewink Oops my bad, thank you for the feedback, I'll change that right away ! The lore and character development is a main part of the game and I couldn't do much on that part yet, but I plan to have a whole lot more dialogue with Liha so the player can learn more about it !

@hexa3 It's on the way, I have a clear image on how I want this game to be and to where it leads so, check out the upcoming updates ;) Thanks for your comment !

jk5000 2020-04-21 18:07

This is overall an okay little game, but it is clear it is your first game. I would recommend your next game to be a really simple and more polished game.

haoro 2020-04-21 18:19

@jk5000 Thank you ! Yeah, I did set the project's ambission way too high so I couldn't finish anything properly (and that even made me do some spaghetti coding to finish on time x). I learned a lot and have a precise, yet simple idea of hoc I can finish this game properly for a first version !

j-c-one-bit-studio 2020-04-21 18:45

This was very well done. I loved the emotes for the AI, gave it a lot of personality. And the gameplay was quite intense when the big room opens up. I just wish you could skip the introductory part at the beginning, it would make replaying the game easier.

xenith 2020-04-21 19:53

this was quite a mixed bag but ended up enjoying myself, good luck for the contest!

haoro 2020-04-21 20:41

@j-c-one-bit-studio Thank you ! I'm currently reducing all the introduction to make it shorter and will later on what was originally plan, knowing making the flower grow little by little so the difficulty can increase and Liha can explain more stuff !

haoro 2020-04-21 20:42

@xenith Thank you ! I'm working hard to make it less messy and more smooth !

drkfir 2020-04-22 06:59

Wow, I never thought about something like this, I just can't believe it, it's amazing :D

yoan-allibert 2020-04-22 16:05

good idea there, you got something nice. A little bit too much text, and missing a few feedbacks for the player, but overall great job !

owl-and-jackalope 2020-04-23 04:25

As a first game jam entry, there is a lot here. You have good bones for a game about managing your resources and puzzle solving your way to getting the flowers watered and taken care of. For the next jam or your next project, you should spend a little more time just developing out some levels and fun mechanics. The dialogue (and extra flair) is always fun to write down and think about, but its usually better to build a game around a mechanic than it is a story. That said, I thought the dialogue was very cute and gave me a chuckle while playing (Especially the over sensitive line). Keep up the good work. I think there is a lot of potential there.

haoro 2020-04-23 12:05

@yoan-allibert Thank you ! I do plan on adding some animation when you water the flower, and I already make the dialogue shorter and stopped disabling player's movement =)

haoro 2020-04-23 12:08

@owl-and-jackalope Thank you for the advices ! I did thought of putting 6 rooms after the first one to get the flower 1 by 1, but as my first project I messed up my project time management x) Thankes again for your motivating comment, be sure to check the next version (the game will be much better ;)

bittripbrit 2020-04-24 17:53

Honestly, for a first time jam entry and with as much experience as you claim to have, this is very impressive. I loved the little interactions in the dialogue, though it seemed not overly receptive to trying to progress with it (others have commented on that already though, but just thought I'd mention it!). Lots of potential and I look forwards to your submissions for future jams!

chris-rock 2020-04-25 03:25

I definitely had fun with this one. The UI was great, I like the snark of the overlord. The bright spotlights on the bright flowers had a very early Pixar feel to it which was really nice. Good work!

feingehacktes 2020-04-25 17:03

Would be nice if you could add builds for other OS like Linux and Mac

nurkkacthulhu 2020-04-25 20:36

+1 for the "don't take control away from the player unless you absolutely have to", after seeing the texts once and when you knew what to do it was irritating to stop what you were doing to spam the dialogue away. The tutorial guy was not to my liking, but I liked that you could go through the dialogue fast! This has potential, so I hope I'll get to play your future jam games too!

haoro 2020-04-26 00:25

@feingehacktes I'm surprised I didn't even think about it x) I'll correct that as soon as possible !

infinite 2020-04-26 22:58

I really liked the tutorial and the conversation with the AI. The art is simple but it gives a nice mood ;) I tryed also your last version 1.01 but could not hit the start button :sob:

haoro 2020-04-26 23:19

@infinite Weird, let me try to correct that, thanks for trying !!

haoro 2020-04-26 23:25

@infinite I tried to download it and it works fine, I also ask a friend to try and it worked :/ Can you try again and see if re downloading it again make it works ? Also, does the Quit button work ? Thank you in advance if you can try that !

quillwerth 2020-04-27 02:28

I laughed when the first door opened and there's *six more flowers.* Great writing!

ultrarat 2020-04-27 02:33

Great for a first unity game!

My game design improvement feedback is could use more particles to know the shooting water worked :)

nico-thomas 2020-04-27 09:03

Really liked the dialogue!

emperor-eagle 2020-04-27 09:04

Pretty cool first game! The writing was really good. I noticed how great the water dispenser was graphically with the blue capsule inside, encased by a clear capusule for the glass/plastic. I thought that was quite cool and unique. The instructions were also clear. Definitely try to spice it up with another mechanic that adds something more to the game, because it does need it. A great start to your game development! Well done!

charlietu 2020-04-27 14:49

Impressive entry, considering your background on Unity ! Good gameplay ideas, but I would definetly have gone for something "simpler" for a solo entry :) Keep up the good work !

zerohbeat 2020-04-27 15:59

Really unique game! Really liked the look fo the character bot. The writing is amazing. The ludum dare verson worked for me (even though it kept me reseting to the start all the time). Can't believe this is your first game and Dudum Dare!

eduardogacn 2020-04-28 05:25

good game

vernalbehemoth 2020-05-01 09:33

Nice work on the characters and the story, it was quite a lot to get through all the text though and maybe the game could step it up a little quicker to keep it interesting.

the movement was really smooth and the lighting in the game was super! It is hard to make such a simple design look good but you managed it!

Maybe it could have a couple more things to do like fixing a power generator or something to add a little bit of diversity?

Great work!

shakedimus 2020-05-01 15:35

I liked the dialogue and the idea, but it is obviously far from finished. I did think the dialogue tried to much to be funny sometimes which made it less clear for example "right click to pick up the seed .... " so I looked around for the seed for 2 minutes , went into the dark part , got stuck and had to restart the game. Second time aparrently the next dialogue opens up the seed tray, this is just asking for confusion and unnecessary. The flowers did look pretty nice and the concept sounded interesting. Hope you can finish it a bit more next time, I've had the same problem before and one advice (which I never follow myself) is to try and scale it down as much as possible while retaining the core idea, make something playable and try to make that fun. I've had multiple jams where I lost a full day on optimizing something I had to change in the end because it didn't work as intended :p

haoro 2020-05-01 15:54

@shakedimus Thank you for your feedback ! Did you check the V1.0.1 ? This version is more how I imagined the game so give it a try ;)

togimaro 2020-05-01 17:45

Nice dialog! The smiley are great ahah! I found the tutorial a little confusing I found the game a little to difficult, the game area is huge but we are relatively slow :/ Otherwise it's quite funny (I really loved the flowers name ahah) Cool game!

barret 2020-05-11 00:44

I kept thinking I was breaking the game and didn't realize the flower had a health bar that I had to keep watering lol. once I figured that out I was able to get to the next part but I died very shortly after.

I did like the 3d models for the flowers they looked pretty. bummer you weren't able to get some sound effects and music but I understand.
