hard but very very great

qyouk 2020-04-21 22:11

Clever idea! But a bit too hard for my taste. I feel like "it" could jump higher. For example if you are against a block, you can't jump high enough. You have to get back a little to jump higher. Qnd when I tried to create a word with q in it, i died... But except this little things that could have made the game more fun to play, the idea is cool and I wish i could play it again with more polish! GG ;)

recursor 2020-04-21 22:33

@qyouk Yeah the jump is physics based so that is why 'it' doesn't jump as high when next to a block because of the friction. Dying when typing a q is a bug. I'll address that forthwith.

jharler 2020-04-23 17:59

I really like the idea behind this. I had a little problem with controls (the pause at the end of a jump kept throwing me off), but I really like the idea of using typed words to bring assistance to the player. Nice work!

le-xuan-vu 2020-04-23 18:00

i like your sound and idea but it's hard with me

boyturnedrobot 2020-04-23 18:01

Not a bad idea for a game, I had trouble jumping while pressing forward against a wall. I don't know if the physics causes it to have friction against walls and therefore not jump as high in that situation, or if it has to do with the scaling that happens to it when it's walking? I think if you iron that issue out you have a great future game. Creative stuff, keep it up!

hiremedeveloper 2020-04-23 18:04

i love the idea of the game. very original, reminds me of scribblenauts. the main problem i had with the gmae however was that none of the words i wrote were accepted, im not sure if there is a list of words that can only be used, but it didnt seem to work on any.

Very interesting! It's an awesome game especially when it's considered that it's a compo game.

2 points I'd like to make are: 1. It's very easy to stuck (not talking about getting stuck can be resolved by 'q' key) 2. The explanatory texts are too quick

But I really liked the idea and the game overall

kent-reese 2020-04-23 18:06

I like the innovation here, the mechanic of summoning is a really cool idea, but there were several spots I got stuck simply because I had no idea what you wanted me to type

black-flag 2020-04-23 18:06

Great concept! The movement feels well refined, however maybe the it should jump just a bit higher! Overall, this is a really good Compo entry!

tcicerodev 2020-04-23 18:10

Super cool idea, and very well implemented! I do think jumping should be a little higher though. it gets annoying trying to jump up one block because you have to time it almost perfectly. I loved the sound effects and the animations too! Overall, really well done!

gamescodedogs 2020-04-23 18:13

Oh boy... I love the idea! I want to see this game helping kids learning languages! Wish you the best of luck!

flamti 2020-04-23 18:13

Good idea!

tsombi100 2020-04-23 18:20

Cool concept

draklaw 2020-04-23 18:20

Great idea, however I ended stuck on a level with spikes because the camera didn't follow my character when I moved past the screen, so I couldn't finish the game.

randomlb 2020-04-23 18:21

Cool game! I like how you put a creative twist on the theme! The main mechanic of the game was unique, the animations looked smooth, and the sound effect were really well done too. Jumping against walls felt a little bit off; I suggest you increase the jump height? Overall, a really awesome game!

chance-slaughter 2020-04-23 18:23

AMAZING! you are literally keeping it alive and I love that.

shardykins 2020-04-23 18:26

I really like the concept and its very well scoped for the time frame. I also now know that my vocabulary is rather limited when it comes to 'it' words. I like the restriction of only being able to use a word once, I ended up finding some pixel perfect ways to bridge a gap with the word I already had so not to waste another, and moving while holding the stomps up with the mouse felt really good.

Unfortunately I got stuck on one of the levels where it seemed like the screen should have moved to another panel, or just moved along with my character, bit it didn't so I wasn't able to see where I was going :/ The level with spikes in the center, 3 stops along the top and a 4th just on the right side transitioning to the next room.

brachistosauro 2020-04-23 18:28

Creative idea! I often ended up mounting on a word and slowly moving the mouse toward the exit. I also get to the ending of a room and nothing happens... Was that the end?

mikel 2020-04-23 18:43

I really like the game concept. Animation and movment feel very good even done just with letters.

I agree that explanatory text is too quick, I had to restart because I missed that words can be dragged.

But I got stuck in this screen... I don't know if it's unfinished or it should scroll but I exit to the right and die without seeing what killed me (it is not the stomp)

@mikel Oh my no that shouldn't happen. I'll look into it thanks for letting me know.

technogoth 2020-04-23 20:28

Its a neat idea but I struggled a lot with the jumping and a lot of the words I tried it claimed weren't real words.

denis123 2020-04-24 09:05

As mentioned above, I didn't have enough time to read the instructions and every jump was annoying :D but it's a great idea and I'm sure you can make it into a great game :)

hiisileiri 2020-04-24 16:06

Interesting idea, but very challenging game play in this concept - especially if player is not familiar to English language. I think "taking a challenge" is the right perspective when playing this game; Playing this is like trying to find large amount of the right ingredients into your shopping cart in a foreign ground's trade shop. The game is also a critically hard, because the rules are initially unclear and the levels are unbalanced for the player: bunch of enemies and challenging platforms and weak player character. There are also not much words "beginning of the letters with it-", so i would prefer to allow of use with the last created words on the future levels; One way is if you play a word "Italy" on level 1, you may use the word again on level 5 (="Italy" has 5 letters and then wait Level 1 + 4 levels -to forward) This game idea can be also applied into other game concepts (i.g. the platformer game into a strategy game) where to (imo!) the game's idea would fit better than a platform game - concept. Balance with vowels and consonants, and also word's syllables balance, should be taken into account in the framework. Using the words as the characters and obstacles, reminds a bit of the nethack- game, so there’s a slight retro spirit to the game

recursor 2020-04-24 18:10

@hiisileiri Thanks for the feedback. The words do not have to begin with "it", they only have to have "it" contained in the word somewhere. When I went looking, there were over 10,000 English words that met that criteria, so I don't think that is an issue. You are right that non-native English speakers might be at a somewhat disadvantage, but a bit of Googling will get you more words than you will ever need to play the game. Based off of the feedback from all who have played, I think the most glaring issue is the lack of clear instructions (mainly that they disappear too soon) which I need to fix ... and perhaps the jumping though that one is a bit more problematic to solve because of the way I'm moving the player.

levidsmith 2020-04-26 00:34

Nice little game, and it's educational too! I like how the words (rat, hop, stomp) react like the objects they represent.
