Good starcraft like graphics!

le-dav 2019-10-07 20:52

Sprites are very beautiful! And the sound is very dark I love it :) Good job !

sawtan 2019-10-08 06:27

@danielcmcg Ohh thanks! :)

@le-dav Thank you! That makes us happy to hear! Cheerz!

The art design is great, the pixel art was really well done. The art is really consistent which can be a rarity among jam games. The sound design really worked well with the art style, it's hard to go wrong with this style. The shooting sound got on my nerves because the best way to play seemed to be just holding down the fire key so I constantly heard the little laser sound. This had a surprising amount of depth to it, I thought I would be just endlessly collecting upgrades. My expectations were blown by a boss battle which I feel like I never see in these games! Nice way to innovate I loved your doom style galaga! Really felt like I went from zero to hero.

sawtan 2019-10-08 21:46

@nobongo Dude, that just made my day, I'm super glad that you enjoyed the pixels, and that you appreciated the boss battle, we've had the intention to make bosses in previous LD jams, but it has always fallen short due to there being no time, well, this time we actually put that up as a primary goal, so the boss got in quite early (and one of our coders worked on it pretty much all the way through). So now we can check that off the list. Many thanks for the kind words, and Neon Void was awesome! :metal:

justuspan 2019-10-09 08:54

I love the elaborate pixel art that has well designed subtle change of the shader on the spacecraft, while the level design is little bit boring because there is little variant of behaviour of enmeies. And I recommend to add a score system so that player can feeling that they win something at least. Anyway it's a nice game, say hello to your artist!

sbtn 2019-10-09 11:51

Really liked the art and sound! Nice upgrade system too for the weapons. Felt like a good and solid jam game.

sawtan 2019-10-09 21:21

@justuspan *Artists waving back* Thanks for the feedback! And I'm glad that you dig the pixels! We wanted to add more enemy types, but this time around we put most of our effort on getting a boss fight into the mix, and on that point we manage to pull it though (we've had boss ambitions in earlier jams, but it has always been taken out due to priority). Anyways! Thanks for testing the game and thanks for the feedback! Cheers!

@sbtn Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! And I agree, the weapon upgrades has a nice feeling to them! Cheerz!

keppu 2019-10-10 07:43

I really like the graphics. Color palette is well chosen and gives warm old-school vibe. Sound effects are good overall. They are just enough to give feedback on the action. I felt that the music was too jarring as it had rotating 3d effect. I'd personally like to have a button to turn it off.

Boss had nice feedback on hit with flashing sprite. Other enemies could have used the same effect for player feedback.

Weapon variety was nice. I found my favorite "branch" to be the orange one. At the start I used to avoid the orange power-ups as bombs. The orange color they use gave the feeling that they were part of the enemies or their projectiles. I had no such problem with the blue ones as their color was vastly different from the enemy palette.

I think this game is a solid foundation. It could use more enemy variety and indicator for player where the ship is currently with the weapon branches.

Hope this feedback helps you.

sawtan 2019-10-10 19:42

@keppu Many thanks, I can agree that the music moves around a bit to much, I had minimum time to put on that part, clocking in most time in the graphics, would be better to go for a more chiptune friendly soundtrack, but time is always against you on these here jams ;) A Mute button would be good in that case for sure!

Good feedback on the weapons, I like the orange more as well, might have been better to have them in a green hue, but the orange looks a bit bad-ass as well!

We wanted more enemy types as well, but the boss fight was our biggest priority on this round, next time we might give the grunts some more love and care for sure!

Thanks for the great feedback! Cheers!

kirroyal 2019-10-10 20:26

I think the music set a nice mood. Graphics are awesome but i wished for a little more variety. Overall really solid just could be a bit faster =)

sawtan 2019-10-10 20:31

@kirroyal I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the music, and I agree, a bit more variety on the enemies would be gold, but alas, time is always against you on this one!

Maybe we can make a 1+ post-ld version where the game speeds up for a second run if you complete it! Thanks and cheerz!

dodelov 2019-10-10 20:35

Very good graphics. I love these games. I think the game lacks dynamics. I think you need to increase the number of opponents and reduce their health. Hitbox player seems to me great.

recursor 2019-10-10 21:46

Reminds me of retro games like galaga and galaxian. Getting the upgrades was quite fun and I enjoyed seeing what upgrade came next.

thepiratenun 2019-10-11 21:50

Wow, this was a really incredible entry! I just loved the graphics to death, and the combinations of them and the nice sounds made it very immersive. I like how you mixed up the Galaga style gameplay with gun upgrades, and the final boss battle was insanely intense! I personally wasn't able to finish it, but it is definitely a reasonable challenge (though I wouldn't have minded an extra life or two) (maybe as a pick up after the gun is fully upgraded?). Wonderful job!!!

0x01f0 2019-10-13 20:38

Well done guys :D You can really tell from the game that you have worked together before. The game is really well polished and balanced very nicely, it constantly kept me on my toes. :scream_cat:

phoenix-fireflower 2019-10-19 14:10

A very polished retro-style game with great art and gameplay.

I wish the game had auto-fire, though. There doesn't seem any reason to let go of the fire button.

dob 2019-10-19 15:33

I really like the retro style, and the ship art and presentation is wonderful. The stereo effects on the music were a nice touch. I found myself wishing there were more levels to the shot power-ups. Challenging, fun, and a cool walk down memories of the 1980's

sawtan 2019-10-19 21:12

@dodelov Many thanks! With a bit more time I believe we would have made a whole lot of more enemy types for sure, dynamics is definitely needed in shmups! Thanx n cheerz!

@recursor Thanks, and yeah, we love them old shmups (though my favorites must be R-Type and Raptor, a bit later editions to the genre). Glad to hear that you enjoyed it!

@thepiratenun Ohh thanks! I'm super happy that you enjoyed our little game! The upgrades and boss was our main focus on this LD, so it's great to hear that it's appreciated. I do agree with you about the extra life thing, I have a confession to make as well, I haven't finished the boss fight either (I'm but a lowly gfx and music artist of the group), so it's a hard fight for sure!

@0x01f0 Yay! Thanx, we do get along quite nicely after a couple of game jams together! We all are looking forward to the next one where we'll put more focus on doing a game around the theme! Cheerz!

@phoenix-fireflower Thanx, as the projectiles are I do agree that it doesn't make much sense not to fire all the time, but I don't think I would enjoy auto-fire in my regular shmups to much, it's a bit more immersive to actually press a button to activate the shooting, but I do see your point! :) Cheerz!

@dob Ahh grand feedback sir, I wish we had time to make more enemies and power-ups as well, but alas, a jam is to short! Maybe we'll make a more fully fledged shmup in the future! Glad to have been able to move you back in time and cheerz!

adnonymous5 2019-10-19 21:19

Art's really beautiful, good stuff with that. I might just be bad at the game, but until I played it through a few times, I wasn't able to collect the power ups for my ship's gun. Without those, the game is pretty boring. After getting them one after another though, it's really fun! However, it's not too innovative, pretty much a straight copy of Space Invaders and the dozens of other games made in that format. I'd like to see the variety of enemies and number of them scale up a little more dramatically or a little faster maybe? Sounds are really neat. And again, gorgeous art.

almost 2019-10-19 21:36

Cool game. At first I missed a powerup because it went off the bottom of the screen and missed some enemies because they flew away, so I restarted in order to be able to get the powerups. It would be nice if they slow down near the bottom of the screen to give some time to pick up.

After getting 5 blue shots and 4 yellow shots I couldnt tell if additional upgrades had any effect. I lost to the boss because I didnt realize for a while that I was supposed to shoot the eyes and had been shooting the middle of the head.

itsdanidre 2019-10-20 07:37

I like the minimalistic scroller design. Even the subtle turn animation.

It was pretty hard to hit enemies until later on when you were lucky enough to receive powerups that weren't bombarded with enemy bullets. And the hitbox was too big.

The game does remind me of chicken invaders and Touhou. I wish at the end there was some way to heal though. Its really hard! :confounded: I would say though, it doesn't do the description justice; as in I go in to find salvation yes. But in game its just a shooter and move around. There isn't really a score to keep track of how many I was able to destroy, or an in-game reward aside from a scroller shooter.

All in all, really good game for a jam! (a bit frustrated because of how seemingly unfair I died, but I did enjoy the game)

pkenney 2019-10-26 23:34

Sprites were on point - slick space ship and creepy monstrous aliens straddling sci-fi and lovercraftian. The eerie background music brings us a bit deeper into that mood, and the sound effects are effective without getting in the way. Controls tight, and the trickiness of grabbing the pickups that fall quickly forces us to take risks, darting through a rain of danger to snatch victory. Only complaint is that it's a bit slow to get rolling which makes for a hesitation to start "one more game".
