Amazing game, the main mechanic is really interesting. The difficulty curve is well done, and I especially liked level 5. As for improvements, one very minor gripe is that it isn't always obvious how much of the level is accessible. Specifically on the final level, I expected to be able to move right further than I was allowed to. Additionally, I feel that some sort of outline for blocks could help when trying to distinguish where objects are height-wise.

Ahh, a great puzzle mechanic!

I made it to level 10 but I'll have to come back for more later. The movement rules felt initially quite rigid and I think I would have been sold more quickly on the idea if the main character wasn't a human or if there was another explanation for its "clumsiness".

The visuals were neat as well although I would have hoped that there would have been just a touch of camera movement when walking (or something similar) so that I could have figured out the layout of the levels a little better. These are just very minor nitpicks though. Overall it's a great game!

**This was an absolutely incredbile experience.** The puzzling potential of those mechanics is simply mind boggling. At level one I was lost as to where the puzzle could go. By level three my mind had been blown. And then there was level 6. That was simply marvellous. Honestly one of the best puzzle games that I have **ever** played. I'm just struggling to fault it as a game. The one annoyance is that returning to the menu (with the esc key) loses all progress. A simple data storage solution and this game is a masterpiece. I'm actually quite disappointed; having been a fair way in and losing progress with the click of a button is frustrating.

My critical mind also forces me to bring up the (relatively) weak link with sacrifice. Whilst the levels do end with you burning your valuables, the final end trigger could have been anything (for example transporting a kitten to grandma) and the game would still have been the same thing. This fluidity makes me think that the theme was an afterthought, or maybe the idea was conceived before the event, but regardless, the puzzles are outstanding.

I highly recommend this game, it gets the brain goin! It's severely underappreciated. 5/5 for fun!

Ooh i forgot to mention you can use "+" or "-" to switch levels. Progress isn't saved, I didn't manage to get that done in time.

@stevenjmiller Thanks! Yeah reading the level layouts is hard - i tried to design around it but it needs work. What do you mean by "outline for blocks"? I was thinking maybe I could tint the block colours differently based on their height...

@antti-tiihonen haha yeah it's super goofy movement, but I think i'm ok with that :) Thanks for playing!

@justcamh aw thanks so much! i'm really glad you enjoyed it. Sorry to hear about the lost progress (see the first couple sentences in this msg). Also, I hear you about it being theme-weak, that "sacrifice" just ties into the game's theming, not its mechanics. This was just the only idea I had that I wanted to make/play, so i went with it. :)

toboggan 2018-12-03 16:35

@justcamh oh and fwiw it was not conceived at all before the event, but i was planning/hoping to make it a sort of "spiritual successor" to my last game, _Hiding Spot_, regardless of the theme. So in some ways you could call that preconceived. :)

stevenjmiller 2018-12-03 17:27

@toboggan An example would be if the level in the screenshot had a black line between two lower two platforms. I think tinting would have the same effect and would probably be better.

Beautiful. Really enjoyed playing through it and the puzzles were tricky. Great job.

marcos-donnantuoni 2018-12-03 20:22

I even imagine Hiding Spot like a prequel of this game; only a little change needed: after you enclose yourself, you strike a match... (dark, I know)

This is the 2nd height-based sokoban I've seen this jam (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/omelettes) but I like the mechanics of this one a lot. The different ways that the box can be moved upwards leads to a lot of Stephen's Sausage Roll style epiphanies and discoveries. Same with the box blocking your movement. Pretty much every level in the first 8 or so (other than the obvious tutorials) felt impossible to me but then I figured it out. Really masterful design there. Atmosphere was great and calming too, and the game even looked good on my ultrawide!

swanijam 2018-12-04 02:54

I got stuck on level 5 but it was super interesting and i LOVE the style. this reminds me of some games in this vein ive played before, limited movement creating difficult spatial puzzles, esp. steven's sausage roll, but I haven't seen any with the space limited in quite this way, and that made this very intriguing! great sound and art 10/10

walterp 2018-12-04 04:10

Nice game, and good puzzles. Controls seemed a little wonky at times when picking up the box and moving around. I love the zoom out when you put your possessions in the flames, very cinematic and moving. Keep up the good work.

spixbird 2018-12-04 04:14

Pretty good mechanic, my first time I played a puzzle game like this. I'm afraid I am not intelligent enough to beat lvl 4, but well done nevertheless :)

pranjalbisht 2018-12-04 07:26

Wow, amazing puzzle mechanic! Kept me busy for quite some time. I got stuck at level 6 for a while and later couldn't complete level 10 at all, haha. Some great level design there. The only issue I had was the camera angle, made it hard to differentiate between height and the ground dimension along the camera direction.

toboggan 2018-12-04 12:59

@spixbird you can do it! it all comes down to whether you enjoy being stuck or not :)

planschi 2018-12-04 14:33

Wow nice game! I’m very impressed with the polish on what you have here!I think it has potential to be developed further.

le-slo 2018-12-04 14:52

I loved the last level, not sure if it was the designed solution (cynpvat n obk va gur onpx bs gur fgehpgher) but seemed very refreshing and clever. As it is said, the readability for heights is awkward, but you can play without any problem. Another great game for toboggan.

shieldgenerator7 2018-12-04 18:48

very clever puzzle game! has the hallmarks of a great puzzler, including those puzzles you think are impossible but really aren't once you stop and think about them. Well done!

my only real complaint is that the art style sometimes makes it difficult to see the level layout and how far/ how high certain blocks are. but the overall gameplay and puzzle design is really cool!

azargaz 2018-12-05 22:12

Really cool idea for puzzle game and great aesthetics. The only thing I didn't like is how in some levels it's hard to tell how high up you can go, but overall really good game.

michal 2018-12-05 22:35

so pretty game

shulololo 2018-12-08 05:44

Dang that last puzzle is pretty sick, took me a while to figure out what to do with the three extra boxes. Do you plan on releasing a full version of this game in the future?

toboggan 2018-12-08 18:10

@shulololo definitely! i have some more ideas for it that i'd like to explore. thanks for playing!

manimal 2018-12-11 22:18

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, duuuuuuuuuuude. This is insane. I remember your previous LD. This is quite similar. And I know one more thing. I m looking forward for another one of your awesome games. Good health long live to you my friend. All the music, everything is so cool.

arron-fowler 2018-12-14 11:41

I really enjoyed this entry. Peaceful and frustraiting in equal measure. The look and feel of it spot on and soooo much potential to build on if you take it further. Great work
