Very cool, looks like I wasn't the only one adding survival horror as the other genre. I like how lively you made the graphics even with such a simple style.
I rescued 4 out of 6 people, but then some little shit with a wrench rushed me out of nowhere and I died :(
It was fun though, and I really like the way you implemented the combat. However, the movement didn't feel too great. I think that's because it's faster than I'd expect from a horror game, and the sliding/friction felt out of place too.
Overall: nice job!
@Ale I totally agree with you on the movement. In general, there was an extra bit of polish to the game that I unfortunately didn't have the time to get to. Thanks for playing though, it seems like you still had fun despite the game's flaws! :)
@designernap Thanks for playing! :) I would've liked to have added a few more ambient sounds, but I'm glad you still found the atmosphere effective.
I really enjoyed this! Great dark atmosphere and I dig the art style and the shifting of the player's face when you move/change direction. When I first fired it up it defaulted the graphic quality to very low (I didn't notice) and the movement was insane. I would tap the keyboard and the player would rocket off in a direction. When I loaded it up again and changed the quality to ultra it felt perfectly responsive. Just a note for anyone else who may have experienced that. Excellent submission! Especially for compo!
cool entry. Adding some creepy music would be great
@Balance686 Ouch, that's a pretty nasty bug I wasn't aware of. Thanks for pointing that out! Glad you enjoyed it though :)
@Atelier Duchu Totally. I literally started working on a creepy song an hour before submission time, but I just wasn't able to pump out a song in time. Thanks for playing though! :)
I like it! The graphics are well done and fit neatly together, and as you mentioned there are a few bits of polish here and there to be added. You can add them now, just keep the download link to the original file and mark the updated one as 'updated' or 'latest' or something so people know which version to rate you on.
Regardless, I had fun! Nice job!
Cool game, lots of fun. Good job.
Wow! i loved the way the character moves and attack! (even tho i feel like attracking in 360ยบ with the mouse would have been great!) even the detaill of the moving expression feels nice. I would like to see this finished! the gamefeel fits in a roguelike experience, too!
Had to try this one out because it sounded similar to my project! I enjoyed this quite a bit. My favorite part is definitely the small progression system of acquiring better weapons and more health.
I think something that would have made this experience better is if you could hold multiple keys in a separate inventory. I found myself backtracking quite frequently just to get a key, unlock a door, and then go back for my weapon.
I was able to save all 6 people! :D
It's a really nice touch that the enemies can pick up weapons. This game is fun but it would really benefit from the addition of a minimap.
@Articulated9 Oh I am absolutely working on a "fixed up" version of the game actually! Unfortunately I haven't quite found the time to make a lot of progress after work, but hopefully an updated version will be up soon-ish. Thanks for playing! :)
The attacking mechanic was cool and I enjoyed exploring the world but I wasn't sure what was going on. I hit a bunch of guys then I found someone with 8 hit points standing over a key who chased me and couldn't be hurt. I died trying to escape him after I got sandwiched between him and another enemy.
@Jonathan Daar Totally fair! Players being confused about what to do was a concern of mine when I submitted this thing. The character with the 8 hit points is actually a character you're supposed to save! You're supposed to lead them back to the beginning of the level, where there's that "Rescue Point" circle thing. I'm hoping to update the game at a later point, and make this a bit more clear. Thanks for playing though! :)
I really like your game! Good mood and nice progression (plus quite long for a compo game!). A map only showing the rooms you've discovered would have been a really nice addition. Keeping the "hostages" with you all the time (until one of them is low on HP) is a nice strategy, it's really great that they attack at the same time as you, adds a lot to the combat. Well done!
Looked cool. Played fun well done.
I guess my family will have to find someone else to save them bcz I am not ready to face those lunatics. I was surprised when one of them picked a knife, I felt like "Holy s\*\*t, I am f\*\*ked". The game is fun and the difficulty progresses in a nice pace. The art is really cute and I like the fact that the character slowly turns his face in the direction he moves. The atmosphere is nice, not creepy but has tension. I am just annoyed that I can't attack diagonally while the lunatics can. Overall, great game and one of the rare times I enjoyed a survival horror game.
There was so much attention to detail that you managed to pack in. I really liked the different combinations of enemies with regards to size/design/weapon, and also the fact that they were able to pick up weapons that were on the ground. I think you combined the two genres really well, with the various arcade elements enhancing the horror aspects instead of competing with them. The polish put on the graphics was nice too, with the randomized(?) background effects (like the blood/scratches) and the way your characters face shifted around as you moved.
Also it was almost definitely unintentional, but the face symbol representing the people you rescued reminds me of a recurring symbol from the movie Noroi, which just added to the horror atmosphere for me haha noroiface.jpg
Good job! I love the graphics, and the gameplay is very fun! I like the minimalistic audio, and the genres mix quite well (a little too well, but that's okay).
Good job, and good luck!
Nice game, I had fun. Would have loved to be able to "charge" an attack and then release it when the enemy is close. Good work!
This was a great submission! It was really fun, I LOVED the tutorial room at the menu. I also loved being able to buy hearts for 1 coin.
I would have enjoyed this much more if the controls were a bit tighter, though. The slow attack felt very frustrating and like I couldn't defend myself properly. I also feel like a bit less friction is needed when walking, the character felt like they were slipping on ice a bit.
If those two things were improved I could absolutely see myself playing this for ages! The game itself was a great concept and really fun overall. Nice submission!!
@Autumnotopia Thanks so much for the feedback! That unintentional reference to Noroi is hilarious though, because I really like that movie. It's been a few years since I've seen it, so it wasn't on my mind when I made the character designs, but it makes me like the character designs more haha. Thanks for playing!
@Jonathan Lorenz A charge attack was actually originally planned, but I was short on time and having a bit of trouble getting it to feel good :( Glad you had fun though!!
@Goat Toaster Games Haha I'm glad you loved the tutorial room, because that's actually the part of the game I super rushed, and I was worried it would turn off most players! As for the controls, I totally agree with you on there being too much friction when walking. That was something I didn't quite have the time to fix up, BUT a fix for it will be coming in an update soon! :) The slow attack is something I'm still sort of on the fence about; I quite like slower paced games -- and I felt it at least forced the player to think a bit more about their attacks, but I can understand your frustration. I think a big contributor to that frustration might be the fact that enemies take 6 hits to kill; it's a little much. That's something I reduced in an updated version which should be up in the next few days!
I'm glad you enjoyed the game though!! :)
