very nice!! well done!
That was fun, nice style. It would be nice to se possible enemy movement but overall I loved it!
This was one of the mixes we considered at start but we finally couldn't do it. Nice to see you made it so well. It got me thinking for a while.
I like the idea behind a turn based strategy where the units act like chess units. There seems to be some issues with the ai, for example, at one point the ai's knight encountered a formation where it couldn't take any of my units without losing the knight, and it would just endlessly repeat the same moves looking for an opening. At another point, the ai seemingly got stuck in some sort of infinite loop, and it never returned to my turn.
I really like this concept. It was a bit confusing at first, I suspect the ability to attack from the first turn shouldn't be there, but still, well done!
Played twice and got crushed. Very interesting, really makes you think. I liked that you need to sacrifice your units to damage the main building, makes it hard to manage when's the right time to attack. I want to see someone who's good at chess play this now. Good job overall
Really nice concept and combination of elements - surprised I've not seen this before as it works so well. Appropriate music and nice graphics too. One of my favourite games yet. Could be a competitive multiplayer title.
Now thats a really fun game to play, i can spend hours on it! Besides the odd behaviour of the enemy workers as you mentioned, everything seemed nice, very polished and intuitive to play. Keep up the good work!
I was blown back by this entry. The graphics were clean with a consistent perspective and the game itself felt very polished. For a jam entry the enemy AI was actually pretty impressive. This is definitely among my favourites this jam!
Hey, great game. I actually played all the modes and enjoyed every one, just train paladins and they slay everyone in their way. Good luck
Wooo another odb user. :) Consider adding your game to https://github.com/junkdog/artemis-odb/wiki/Game-Gallery
This game is surprisingly fun to play.
Thank you all for your feedback!
@DekuJuice Yeah, the AI has many flaws, one not being able to form an attack strategy. I fixed the issue that it got stuck (it happened when no positive option was available). Thank you for pointing it out!
@mahdi daneshvar Wow, love to hear that! Paladins need to be nerfed :D
@daanvanyperen Will do! Nice seeing you here, i feel humbled, as i always looked into your games on how to use odb. It was kind of tough getting into it, but i finally feel comfortable with it and don't want to live without it's serialization anymore. Maybe, i can exploit this opportunity and ask you for advice :D I thought about making a better AI with a MinMax algorithm - but there i'd need to think about entities that do not exist yet. Right now i only use existing entities. I think i cannot work with entities at that point, but have to create a kind of abstract representation of the board, because i don't know how to properly let the ai think about an entity not existing anymore or changing state, without having to modify (and potentially break) that entity. Does that make sense or do you think something like this is possible and appropriate with using entities as a "base" to let the AI think on? Do you know any game that did something like a 1vs1 board game AI using odb?
I really like the strategy elements of this, the choice to spend a turn investing in buildings and moving workers to resources to have more gold in the future or building units and attacking now to try and win the game. The different scenarios are all interesting as well.
I really liked this game, gave a very fun twist on the original chess genre with buying new units and stuff. I didn't really understand when I got money from stuff so I didn't know when I could expect to make money and buy new units, but when I did get money to get new units, it was very interesting to place and play around with them. Strategy aspect in this is on point. Good job!
a menu explaining how units move might be helpful. Really enjoyed the mashup of chess and RTS. I played it live on stream: Twitch name jtn191
Great mashup idea! I played through all of the scenarios except for the last one, really enjoyed it. Only lost my first game, then settled on a "build a barracks diagonal from their base" strategy and ignored everything else, buying a pikeman every other turn for 6 turns, and that worked too well ^_^. The game felt very polished and I didn't run into any issues, everything seemed pretty clear. Took me a couple turns to realize units were costing gold, perhaps a negative symbol and having the gold coin animate downward would have been better than the slightly redder icon.
Would have been easier if the game fit into the screen alot cut off so I couldn't play. Other then that great job.
Please make 2 players version!!
Oh and I got null pointer exception because I misclicked outside the map when building new unit.
Very good suggestions!
@jtn191 Awesome, we watched the video of your stream and it was really fun for us to watch.
@Jimbly Hehe, yeah there seem to be some really efficient strategies. Downward coin animation stayed on my to do list right until the submission, didn't manage to do it (instead implemented growing forests as resources ;) )
@John-Timora I know the default resolution is quite large, but you can simply zoom out in your browser, problem solved. I also tried to express this in bold in the description, because it's something you can easily run into.
@avavt Hey, nice to see you again! So many options, 2 player would also be interesting. I fixed the NPE, thank you for the notice :)
Oh okay Ill give it another try.
Really nice work! The game size is way too big for my screen, I had to zoom out to 66% before it was playable. It seems like something I would have played on miniclip or addictinggames 10 years ago.
That was fun, played for quite a while and through every scenario. Lost my first two times but the human mind eventually prevails against any machine.. well against a LD-AI at least. Still, I wouldn't know how to start with a strategy AI so they always impress me. Art and sound do their job, solid entry!
I’m not sure if you were able to see it, but I played your game on my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames tonight.
I liked the medieval them, but I found it hard to track my players on the board. Diversity in the character models would have helped. Also the AI is a bit advanced. Having a tutorial level with simpler play might have been nice to introduce all the characters to the player.
I found myself trying to figure out what chess piece the players were. It might have helped to give a clue that ___ is actually a bishop.
In chess if a pawn is diagonal from a piece the pawn is able to take it. However the farmers were not able to take out the other bigger characters when caddi-corner from the bus stop. I ended up dieing because I focused too much on building and not enough fighting. You might someone that plays fast games, but I didn't like the speed at which you needed to respond. It would have been nicer if the AI made more mistakes.
Lastly I wanted to let you know that you game displayed too large for my screen and cut of some important UI elements like HELP.
Thank you for sharing your game.
Really interesting take on chess and city building. Felt like it was a bit hard when a single unit can kill another unit without any protection. Once I got a hang of the movement and what was going on it was fun. Hope you turn this into a full game!
very hard game, but a great idea
