MANI

beebo-studios 2018-04-24 03:18

Great idea, looks amazing, plays amazingly, awesome sound and music - what's not to love? A really great job, and so cute! We send you a fish (cause we are a dolphin and that's what they do)!

darby-costello 2018-04-24 16:50

Really lovely graphics and I like the idea behind this. A lot more polish than one would expect for a game jam entry. I'm keeping this one on my PC for a while; I'll be coming back to it for sure!

firehawk 2018-04-24 16:53

Card Game + Platformer it sounds great! It's fun to play and graphics is good. So I think, the game is awesome.

creepyounguy 2018-04-24 17:14

Really well polished game, one of the mot complete feeling I have seen. Only thing it really needs is the ability to move the camera and scope out the level before hand as there is some trial and error there

PS: I saw this game from ur blog asking for ratings, if you want people to see your game you need to rate [others](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/shooting-stars-fps-match-3-in-space) games, unless ur game is really really good and people are sharing it, you generally get as many ratings as you give out.

pixelproductions 2018-04-24 17:24

Wow, I loved the idea. The graphics are pretty cute so as music. I miss the camera movements, it will be useful to see the level that you're going to pass through.

giantswing 2018-04-24 17:26

Thank you thank you thank you guys for the feedback! First ludum dare so I dont completely know how this whole thing works but i'll definitely be rating other games as soon as I get home :)

Thank you again for the kind comments, it means the world to me

digitaldude555 2018-04-24 17:42

Love the music man. Graphics are great too with the paper cutout character and the boxes. Gameplay is fun and challenging, very polished like others said. My only criticism it doesnt fit the theme well, I have seen this type of game before and it was one genre, usually its a game like moving a robot with card instructions to get into a goal so this game is one genre not combination of two.

Overall 4/5 Good job man.

funisfun8 2018-04-24 17:48

Very innovative idea! I'd love to see this taken further. This could definitely be a full commercial game. The presentation is amazing, graphics, sound, everything! However, given the high level of quality, I feel the need to be a little tougher on the game as a whole. I just have a few critiques:

1. I really didn't like not being able to see the level as a whole. It was fun to think about how to traverse obstacles; it was not fun to make blind leaps of faith. 2. The lose condition isn't clear enough. It seems to be you die if you don't touch the goal by the end of a turn unless you grab a crystal? This could be clearer. 3. Spikes aren't fun. With them being on a real-time clock, it really doesn't add challenge, (just frustration,) and I don't feel they reinforce your main mechanic (turn based platforming). I do feel that they could be really interesting if they acted on a per action timer though, (changing state every so many cards or whatever,) in fact I'd add more obstacles and elements that interact with both the player and the flow of cards. 4. Small note, but given the other issue, when I died, I was frustrated to wait for the game over animation to end. It's not long, maybe a few seconds, but it feels long when you just want to try that again. It's a puzzle game, when you've figured out the puzzle, you don't want to wait to implement the solution. :)

All that said, I really enjoyed Spiky. Very well done! I hope you take this further, I would love to play a more polished version of this game. Take the feedback from this thread, and go make something amazing for us to play!

shadowl33ch 2018-04-24 17:58

Nice job! I like the music and cute graphics. Well done on the particle effects too

giantswing 2018-04-24 18:37

@Beebo-Studios thank you! that's super nice for you to say, there's a lot to improve but I'm super happy that you liked this prototipe :)

@Darby-Costello thank you! I wasn't sure if I were gonna to continue the idea because I didnt knew how people would receive it, but reading some of the comments I'll be going back to work and improve the heck out of the game, thanks again for the support!

@FireHawk thank you for the kind words, it means a lot, really ^^

@creepyounguy thank you for the comment, I really appreciate it, the thing about the camera was that there was some doubts about if it'd spoil too much of the level and miss part of the experience, but seeing some of this comments it's clear that I'd add a lot more to the experience so it's something that I'll be adding soon, thanks again for the feedback!

@PixelProductions thank you for the feedback! The camera thing is something I'll definitely be implementing in the coming days! Thanks again for the comment :)

@digitaldude555 Thank you for the comment! I agree about the theme, it's my first ludum dare and I was really afraid of not coming up with a better idea and running out of time so I ran with this all the way through but I agree that I could've exploited the idea of opossing genres much better, but that's the only way of learning! Thank you again for the kind words, truly.

@funisfun8 Wow... that's a lot of feedback! Thank you thank you thank you, to be honest I completely agree with all your points, I really considered adding the camera thing but my mate thought that it would spoil part of the experience but looking back at it its really something that should be added and I'll definitely will in the coming days. The traps that acted more in a turn based fashion was definitely something that crossed my mind when making the game but time constraints plus lack of a super clear vision of how to implement the levels at the time made me doubt but again, will be something that I'll add in the future, real time really didnt fit that much the concept of the game, also the things about the lose conditions and the delay with restarting are stuff that I'm going to fix for sure!

Again thank you for the amazing comment, I cant believe anyone would take the time to write something so nice and detailed about the game, thank you, really.

giantswing 2018-04-24 18:37

@Shadowl33ch thanks! I hope you had some fun with Spiky :)

funisfun8 2018-04-24 18:54

@Giantswing Of course! This game really deserves to go beyond LD. If my feedback can in any way help with that, I'm happy to do it!

shadowl33ch 2018-04-24 18:56

@Giantswing Yes I did, would love to see the game taken further beyond LD.

brendan-toy 2018-04-24 21:57

really well made, played from beginning to the end :) loved how the puzzles were designed and really made me think. matched the theme very well and was over all a joy to play. my highest rated ludum dare game so far! :)

kubi-entz 2018-04-25 06:34

Oh god, this game looks so amazing! I love the cute music and the mechanics are so well polished! >w<

The graphics looks so cute and it remembers me of Paper Mario haha :P

Btw I see a lot of future in this game outside of LD, like really, you should continue working on it guys, it's amazing! .w.

cristhor98 2018-04-25 06:47

@Kubi-Entz thanks so much, i love u! And do you have a cat on your profile. I love love you.

cristhor98 2018-04-25 08:45

@Brendan-Toy I am very proud that someone has taken the time to complete the game, thank you very much. It means a lot to us

lacre 2018-04-25 10:10

It's really nice! I mean, I LOVE the idea and the mechanics are really well polished

timotheus-25 2018-04-25 10:29

I love the combination of genres man - the way you implemented it had me quite impressed in the fact that it actually worked out so well  well up :sunglasses:

geckoo1337 2018-04-25 17:01

Cool game with a neat aesthetic. You fit with the theme. Sounds are great. Well done ++

elhombrebanana 2018-04-25 18:11

Really cool game! I'm impressed!

I felt lost at level 8 and had to quit. Not being able to look across the level is something that frustrates me a little bit, but besides that it's a very solid entry, with fancy art and really cool music! Congratulations!

giantswing 2018-04-25 18:35

@Geckoo1337 thank you! Thats super nice of you to say! @elHombreBanana Thanks man! As other have said the camera thing is definitely an issue that I've already adressed, I'll be posting a webgl version with many fixes and improvements and new levels if someone is interested!

Again thanks to all the others for giving feedback believe me I'm taking it super seriously and implementing all of your ideas :)

robinhoodpt 2018-04-25 21:23

Welcome to the Ludum Dare Community! I hope I'll see you in future ones again!

So where shall I start with the feedback/criticism?

Let's start with the graphics. Some nice combination of 2D in a 3D world. The whole game feels well together while 2D and 3D isn't normally something that u see together as they are mostly not compatible(hint hint). Next time maybe use a better font, the one used doesn't suit the art style. The dark levels are too dark. It's hard to even see the blocks where u can stand one. Lighten the blocks, or something so that it can be seen better, but that's the only downside of the dark levels. Watch out with what u write. There are quite some mistakes in english.

Audio: Fits really well into the game. Calm but it's still there. Nothing really to say. In the future add more diversity if you are going to continue developing the game.

Now onto the more interesting part, game mechanics and game design of it. First of all congrats on the implementation of the idea it's really well done. The basics work well, and makes it interesting while not missing something. Most of the things I'm going to say after this is mostly extra things to make it better. Just read some comments above, most of the feedback was already given by @funisfun8 nice catch there mate! I want to emphazise on one thing and that is the allowance to see the whole puzzle. Would be nice to not have to do it by trial and error. Also, maybe add some kind of grid, so that people know how many squares away are the boxes. You can get the feeling but it's never sure.

Lastly the UI would need an upgrade. These are probably not u're strong points. Take a look at other games to see how they've done it for inspiration and then adapt it to yours.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed the couple of minutes I played the game for, and we understand the hard work needed to create something like this! 😊 Our team also worked hard to create a game for the jam. You can check it out [here](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/wizsnooks)! 🐳

ps. It took some time, but I completed all levels!

giantswing 2018-04-25 21:50

@RobinHoodPT hey, just tried your game, it was super cool, I'll be playing it later a bit more and rating it, about you INCREDIBLE comment I agree with you and you present some really valid points I'll be implementing all these ideas in the next version which I'll post really soon, again thank you for the comment, I agree with you about the UI too, lots to improve there in aesthetics but also in readibility, the thing about english, well not much to say about that, obviously is not my first language so I'll have to get some english native speakers to help me with that! All in all, thank you about all the feedback :)

honest-dan 2018-04-25 22:29

really cute puzzle game, based on the cards, mana management, and having a finite number of resources to solve level. Music really fitted with the game, could have kept playing the levels are they were challenging and rewarding when figured them out. Felt I guess a bit more like a puzzle game rather than platform (if we're talking about genre blends), however I think the end result is really good.

hs-dave 2018-04-25 22:30

Very enjoyable platformer - one of the better card driven ones played tonight! I liked the mana aspect and the design of the puzzles, very well thought out. The graphics were really cute and fitted really well - the sound never got annoying. Very well done!

giantswing 2018-04-25 22:36

Thank you @Honest-Dan you have a damn cofy stream, I will be checking it more times for sure :) and thanks for the insightful feedback, I'll be taking those into account for the next version!

@hs-dave thangs for the kind words, truly

Also I'll be rating all of your games as soon as I get a moment, again thanks for the feedback <3

gamesplusjames 2018-04-26 01:13

I really loved the artstyle of this game, it worked really well with the style of gameplay. And I really enjoyed the platforming mechanics with the cards and having to carefully plan ahead for your moves. Great work!

2018-04-27 12:26

ema1ih 2018-04-28 11:46

Love the graphics and the audio fits so well. I had so much fun playing it, it's so cute and nice done. This is such a good idea, it's my favorite game so far ^^

nickmarcha 2018-04-29 15:17

Everything was amazing and you did an awesome job at the puzzle design.

nickmarcha 2018-04-29 15:17

👍

maikelortega 2018-05-03 07:20

Great idea, well implemented, good job! Not being able to look around the levels was pretty frustrating though, and because of lighting it was hard to measure the distance for the jumps in a few of them too. Otherwise it was a pretty solid game, I quite liked it! Reminded me of a Lego game I played as a kid!
