I found this game a really fun and enjoyable, would be a good online game for a site like OneMoreLevel, besides the movement being a bit finicky, I think this is a good game :)

Would you mind checking out my game? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/leaf-me-alone

Nice, I like this version :)

Wow it's not really fair to make a platformer and tell people to not grab the coins, is it ;)

Initially it actually really turned me off that there were forced coin grabs, almost skill checks as you will (you must be THIS healthy to open this door), but later on where there are bazillions of coins and it's just jump and pray, I got over that nitpick.

Immediately love the wrap around mechanic. It's already difficult enough without having obstacles covering half of the map. Good stuff!

I enjoyed the game, the art style is really cool and different and the gameplay is pretty good. Nice work!

Interesting game. Took me a bit to actually figure out that more coins = less time (i didnt read the instructions). The wrap around mechanic is a nice touch. The controls felt oddly "floaty" though.

Great use of the theme. Honestly, I did not like this theme as "The more you have the worse it is" kind of describes pretty much every game ever when you think about it, but you actually used it for new and interesting game play successfully.

Anyways, If you are interested in checking out my entry too you can here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/squirrel-puncher-4000

Nice Work! The iteration of the many levels (i didn't got to the end ;) ) and introduction of different gameplay elements was very nice. I would recommend to make the "more coins = less time" mechanic more transparent, that the player can estimate the consequences better.

Did anyone make it to the final boss?

I really like this game. However it does have quite a few bugs. I feel that the movement is a bit off, especially when jumping only works when you're mostly on platform. I experienced a few clipping issues, some of which forced me to start again. I also feel that the hit boxes of the coins are slightly too large, and it makes it feel as if the game is cheating you. A few odd frame rate drops here and there too.

I was initially unwelcoming towards the mandatory coins, but I can appreciate after completing the game how they are carefully used as a balance against the player's timer increase.

There was a decent number of levels, and I think you utilised the wrapping feature very well, especially where it introduces a non-obvious but better path for the player. And that boss battle was more exhilarating than I expected.

Great job!

Erm... no. Could you at least get a better player and physics for him, because that's an integral part of the game.

Interesting twist on a classic genre! Really liked the sound design as well. The movement and collision could use some improvement - jumps were floaty and accelerated upwards about half-way through the jump, and moving felt a bit sluggish.

Nice game with epic music! It is really impressive what you managed to create since you made the game in plain java (without fancy engines or so). I liked that the levels loop around on the sides. The amount of levels you create is impressive too!

eveval 2017-12-07 22:13

Ah, someone else did the "collecting coins is bad" thing! You took it in a slightly different direction than I did tho.

The level design to have the player in the same position from the end of one level to the beginning of the next is really nice! The wrap around all-on-one-screen look is a very good format, but the barriers between some of those wrap around points were a little unintuitive. I think the coins were a little too easy to pick up?

Overall I really enjoyed it & was pleasantly surprised to see such a similar core theme. :) Well done!

I went into this game thinking "Oh, it's a game where collecting coins kills you or makes you lose a life", which would have just been no different from replacing them with spikes. I really like that you didn't end up doing that, that you instead made it so that collecting the coins acts as a penalty, and that there is a puzzle in how you go about reaching the exit without touching coins.

The situations where you're forced to collect coins are a nice touch to make the player consider whether the time spent thinking of another way out is worth the quick exit through the coins. Plus, the situations where you cause a player to pick up coins if they're not quick enough to reset themselves between levels is also a nice touch. Could see this becoming a really neat puzzle platformer with some polish.

There was an issue I ran into [where the character started falling on the side of the screen indefinitely until I moved him away](https://puu.sh/yBAfx/5f30d68cc6.gif). Don't know if that's something you were aware of when submitting and couldn't fix, but it ended up being a minor issue, despite coming up one other time.

Always good to see a game with music in the Compo as well! The music here definitely fit the feel and urgency of the game, while remaining unobtrusive.

The character physics are a little bit...off. It's not that the jump height is necessarily too high, but that it's slow to get there and down, making the character feel less like a person and more like a feather - It lacks a sense of weight to it.

Some of the levels I would jump up through the ceiling and be confused as to why I was hitting my head. There should have been some clear way to tell that there was a platform sitting in the space between the top and bottom of the level, or should have been avoided if at all possible.

rasm 2017-12-08 07:38

I would have liked it more if the collision detection was better and the controls not as floaty. I really like the music though. The coin deducts time mechanic is interesting. Time is money (or negative time in this case).

josscomposer 2017-12-08 16:06

ok... This game is reaaaaally tricky !! >< You got me there :-D ! Nice entry, dude ! Very very good work for a compo... I'm impressed ! Good luck for the next jams ^^ Go and check our game ! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/the-darkest-light

ajayajayaj 2017-12-24 17:32

Wow, that was amazing. The music is perfect, the mechanic is so cool (including the go through the side mechanic). It fits with the mood so well. That's a perfect 5 star game. I made it to level 28 before dying, and I wish it didn't send you to the beginning.

My only suggestion is to make this game smaller, it didn't fit on my 1366x768 monitor, so I had the top part on another monitor.

terracottafrog 2017-12-24 20:29

Love the concept, and the level design, but there are a few points that really hurt the experience.

First off, the controls are way too floaty. I feel like I'm waiting to hit the ground a lot of the time.

Sometimes I stopped moving when falling, I think because I collided with a wall.

Jumping is impossible when at the edge of a platform. As long as the player isn't falling, I feel like they should be able to jump.

Other than that, solid game, and I would love to see a version that addresses some of the collision and control issues!

prodigalson 2017-12-25 00:39

Great minds think a like ;) I like the vector art (I hope I am using the correct term here) giving it that vibe of retro feel to it but looks clean. I'm always a sucker for games that implement the wrap around feature thus adding more fun puzzle elements to the game. I think there's a bug where the timer does not run down and it looks like sometimes I can stand in the air (probably the wrap-around functionality) allowing me to stand on the ceiling of another corner ;) This is definitely very solid compo entry. Great work

Our team does a weekly indie gamedev podcast called Nice Games Club, and we just did a Let's Play episode where we played thirty-six (!!) Ludum Dare 40 games, including yours (which we got a total kick out of)!

Thanks to all of you that played and rated my game, this is the first time I've ever been judged for LD. I hope to accomplish more next time!
