Some nifty ideas here. I really like the GI lighting, it creates a wonderful atmosphere. The darker areas are a little drab, but I suppose that's by design. A technique that helped me was to attach the torch spotlight to the character using a spring. Makes it a lot more natural, instead of glued in the middle like laser sights.
Is there a win condition?
@cornella-xaos I'll look into it. but wouldn't be able to test them. @didactylos you win once you've brought all the power cells to the console in the center. I really like the idea of putting the light on a spring, that would have been so easy! I wish I'd thought of that.
A very impressive game for 3 days!
My experience with the game:
I was walking down the dark halway, holding a canister that a mysterious voice from a green, twenty-sided dice told me to obtain. I had no idea where this voice wanted me to put said canister, but I was scared. This entire place was giving me the creeps. I entered the room where the voice came from originally, and I heard a voice behind me. "You can not feel pain if your receptors are not connected to your body" the voice said. I panicked and ran. I didn't even want to look back to see what was trying to kill me, I just wanted to run as far away from it as possible. I hid behind the green sphere, praying that whatever had spoken had lost me and was leaving, when all of a sudden I heard the voice again, "You can not feel pain if your receptors are not connected to your body." Suddenly out of nowhere, the thing creating that terrifying sound, walked through an object and stared at me. "Please remain calm, you can not feel pain if your receptors are not connected to your body. "It was a menacing robot, that looked ready to kill. I tried to run, but it used its ghostly techniques to attack me. It was too late, I'd lost, the robot had won.
Overall 8/10 This was a great horror game, but the ghosting kinda broke the immersion
This was a super cool game! I loved the graphics and the overall atmosphere. I feel the audio also added a lot to the game, creating a sort of ominous tone. I really enjoyed the idea behind the use of the theme, with the central power core. Overall, a super solid game for 72 hours! Keep working on this, I'd personally love to see more.
@crown-games Oh no! I didn't rebuild my navmesh before I released! I'm pretty sure we're allowed to fix bugs post release, so hopefully that's fixed for whoever plays next.
While not really my cup of tea game wise as I don't commonly play horror games, I can see that a lot of work was put into this. The atmosphere was really well done with the audio and lighting being perfect for the job. Really nice job!
A good game that scared me twice hahahaha but a little bit unfair too, anyways, good job!
Like it! Felt like paranoid checking if I ocasionally drop power cell that I'm holding :) Robots are truly menacing!
Thank you all so much for the incredible feedback! @dreadloaf I'm really not into horror either! Not movies, games, books, none of it. But I thought it would be a good challenge, and LD is perfect for trying a bit of something new. I also usually don't do much with audio and graphics, but this project was like 90% assets 10% code, that might be a result of me being a total blender noob though, this is my first time making my own 3D assets for a game!
+1 on @cornelia-xaos comment!
Thank you all for your lovely feedback from me, too! I think we're working on a mac and or linux build.
@cornelia-xaos and @felipe-tavares, I uploaded a mac and linux build. but I have no idea if they work, let me know!
cool!
@cameronpenner I've just tried the linux build, but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. After the click to play screen all I can see is the sky and the tablet. I can look around but not move.
That was pretty spooky :D Nicely done!
I shit on my pants when the robot killed me! So nice Job. What I've missed is a more rich environemnt, the level is huge but sometimes it fills too empty. Anyway Well done
I can confirm what @rijnswand is saying. Honestly, it looks like there's some kind of missing asset issue...
... After several hours of messing around I can't really tell what the problem is.. (And by messing around I mean decompiling your source... I just leveled up in Assembly-CSharp.dll voodoo... :P ) There are objects in the scene despite non of them being visible...
... I couldn't quit.. just spent another half hour working on it.. and I hacked in a no-clip... it's just your meshes for your walls and floors.. Lights are still visible, but nothing is there. I happened to notice when in the beginning I looked up and saw lights retreating from me so I hacked out the gravity.. and could immediately hear the little spiel the narrator gives you about what's going on...
So.. the problem is.. for whatever reason the geometry in your scene isn't loading. There's no floor.. and therefore... your player controller falls into oblivion when the game launches.
...
I hope my obsession with wanting to play this game fixes your bugs.. XD
Hey @Cornelia-Xaos, we really appreciate putting so much effort into trying to play our game! Unfortunately I don't think either of us know enough about Linux to do much else - it was a simple matter of switching Unity to build a Linux build. Are you sure you're running the right version for the right architecture? It should have exported a x86 and x64 file. Thanks!
This was quite spooky and fun and I had a really good time. Good Job :)
Thank you, @emery!
Congratulations, you scared the absolute bujeezus out of me! Kudos, and good work on a great game!
@pickens-inc I can run the game with both versions (the x86 and the x86_64). In either case, the physical geometry of the world is missing. It really looks like some asset files are missing or something. I dunno what else to try as I've tried all I can. :P
Nice horror experience! The opening dialog sets the tone right off the bat, and the robots spooked me a couple times. I just wish the game was more fun for me. Great atmosphere, though!:)
Great game! Loved the atmosphere and the enemies did scare me a couple of times :p Keep up the good work!
I have been making a 'best of show' series for LD 39, and REAMS was in part 6. Here's the video if you're interested in checking it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yDZ1gd1QPE&feature=youtu.be
First of all a solid entry and nice horror experience :)
Pros: - Nice Atmosphere - good Sounds - nice lighting - big map - almost shit myself whenever I encounter one of the robots
Cons: - small recognition of the different rooms due to empty rooms - finding all container took a long time - no chance to flee from the robot
I would suggest having a smaller map with more assets in it otherwise it is hard to remember the different rooms. Some tilable textures would also improve the appearance of the rooms with small extra work. I found no possibility to get away from the robots if the see me I m dead. A function like sprinting or something like that would give the player a chance to flee and improve the play ability. Maybe give the robot a walking sound to have an idea where they are coming from.
Not sure if it was supposed to but the robot was attacking me although I was looking straight at the floor.
Overall good entry, keep it up!
Thanks @pilarius for the detailed feedback! The map was made really early on, we ran out of time otherwise we definitely would have added more clutter, the map needed to be big enough to give enough escape paths away from the robot, and I was hoping the minimap would help with spacial awareness.
Dead ends are definitely dangerous in this game which can sometimes lead to you getting cornered which can suck.
I tried getting textures to work, but I'm new to blender modeling never mind uv mapping! I'm hoping next time I'll be able to add a bit more Polish in that regard.
I did make it so if you get super close to the robot, it will get powered. So that's intentional. One thing I would change is the power surges, when all the lights flash on and the robot starts chasing you. That can really screw things up if you're at a dead end, and it's a bit of a cheap jump scare. I think it could work, but the current implementation is not where I'd like it to be.
Thanks again for the detailed response, we really appreciate it!
I really like the mood you were able to establish with this and the voice work was well done. It's very jarring when you die, but in a good way, if that makes sense. Congrats on finishing and nice work.
Thank you, @josh-h !
It was great to use a tablet for navigating in the dark. Even when the robot killed me. :D
The prototype is very coherent. Everything resonates with the theme, especially the voice.
Would definitely play a post-jam version. Thanks for the game!
Thank you for the kind praise, @coauctor!
Nice game! The graphics seem nice, and the start screen was well made! The music was awesome, the sound effects were fitting, and the voice acting was clear and easy to hear, something rare for a game made in such sort time!
The idea isn't fully original, but is made in such a way that it can't be called "unoriginal".
It combines object finding, maze and power management, but you can eliminate the maze feel with the use of the phone, that you need to manage, in order to achive the main goal. Mixing those aspects that much can't exactly be called original, but it can't be confused with another game. Well though!
Overall, the game seems nice, the gameplay is solid, it gives you the right feel for a horror-type game, and is well made! I can call this game completed, and not a prototype of some kind! Well done!
The tension is high with this one. The environment is really dark, I tried to keep looking down not to hit any robot but I was having problem navigating the rooms. The art is really good and the similarly looking corridor made me feel disoriented but the navigator was a great help. The audio was well done but I still don't know if that low noise meant that a robot was near or not. Overall, this one is great and... scary.
@jason200101 Thanks very much for the praise! I wish the game something a little more unique like my usual entries but it came out really well thanks to Cameron, and I'm very happy with my voice acting.
@Yetman I'm sorry and yet am very glad to have spooked you! Thanks for your praise! That noise is actually just ambience, but it seems to have misled a lot of people.
Really well made game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFwNYcB13dA
