Great work, the most complete and well-rounded I've seen yet.

Really fun game, with awesome graphics and sound effects. It is very complete and seems to be polished. Good Job!

Great concept for the theme! Was surprisingly fun, great tutorial as well got the hang of it immediately with it!

Very enjoyable game! I really liked the great tutorial and audio. The only issue I had is that I got stuck in an asteroid once and died, but overall a great game!

sir-mr-dr-prof-sr-jr-phd 2017-08-01 20:40

Solid game, like the risk/reward aspect to it. Interesting tutorial but I didn't realize there was a timer until 2/3 of the way through my first game.

itr 2017-08-01 20:42

Nice, though it would be nice if you didn't have to stop completely to access the space station.

Another improvement could have been having it not having a hard-countdown before losing, and rather some challenge to overcome that gets harder over time.

mennchen22 2017-08-01 20:44

Nice game! Hard to stop if you think you can beat your last score 😁

johnny-turbo 2017-08-01 20:46

I certainly enjoyed playing your game. Overall this game is pretty basic, but it all works well and I didn't really encounter any bugs in my playthrough. You have something very solid and a great potential starting point for a larger project.

Congratulations on making a complete game!

Really nice work within the time frame! You should continue to develop it.

Good game, good sound, goood graphics and good gameplay. The game seems to be just really well made i I think it is a really nice game

Much appreciated everybody! Huge thanks to @togis for playing my game on stream.

This is a very good game and I enjoyed playing it a lot. Thanks for sharing. It's quite fun to explore just a little further each time you head out. The tutorial section was also very well done; most ludum dare games I've played (including my own, shamefully) just thrust the player into the game and expect them to know what to do, but when I got to the game part of Asteroid Scavenger I already knew all I needed to know. Thank you for taking the time to add it.

The graphics, while simple, are very nice to look at. The sound design and music are excellent. Great job with all three of those things.

However, there is one major flaw that, at least for me personally, makes the game far less enjoyable than it could be: I dislike the timer. It feels arbitrary and it breaks my immersion from being a for-hire space miner. It also prevented me from ever fully upgrading my ship, which was disappointing. I don't care about getting a high score, I just want to casually explore space, going at my own pace, slowly exploring outwards and mining everything in the solar system while upgrading to a better and better ship all the time. A less arbitrary time pressure that would allow me to keep playing the game would be to have power be constantly draining at a certain rate, so your maximum time away from the space station would be limited by your maximum power but you'd have no maximum time to play the game.

Additionally, as a space nerd, there are two small changes to the ship physics I'd make to increase the realism. Firstly, I'd remove the space resistance of the ship, and make it so the only way to slow down would be to turn around and apply thrust. When I apply thrust with my spaceship and then it drifts a little bit and then it slows down and stops moving, it feels a lot less like a spaceship and a lot more like a submarine. Secondly, I'd make rotation come from thrusters that apply torque to the spaceship as a physical object rather than just rotating it. This would allow you to turn much faster and again would help with the feeling of controlling a spaceship. It would probably need an "automatically stabilize rotation" button though. Whether these changes are for the better is entirely subjective though and probably something not many people besides me would want.

Overall it's a very satisfying game to play and I'm vey impressed that it was made in 48 hours. I sincerely hope you develop it more post-jam.

Nice game. Overall it needs graphics to be polished and it could become a great game, it has potential.

blueman 2017-08-01 21:43

@iamsodarncool

Thank you for the great review! I'm really glad you took the time to dissect my game.

1. I certainly understand your trouble with the time limit, as it is quite arbitrary. The game, as it's built, could easily be much more expansive and have no time limit. However, for Ludum Dare, I wanted to have a very compact experience as most people will play the game for no longer than 5-10 minutes.

2. As a wannabe space nerd and space enthusiast, even I can understand that the physics are quite unrealistic. Realism was not my main intent, as I focused mostly on consistency in the controls and solid gameplay. If I were to expand on this idea, I would definitely take a much more complex approach to the controls to imitate a real space vessel.

I like the idea of a full game where you are a for-hire space miner. Perhaps you could travel different galaxies, gathering parts and jobs to tweak your custom ship and explore different worlds.

Thanks again! :slight_smile:

My pleasure. It really is a joy to play.

> for Ludum Dare, I wanted to have a very compact experience as most people will play the game for no longer than 5-10 minutes.

Good philosophy. Wish I'd shared it 72 hours ago :P

> I like the idea of a full game where you are a for-hire space miner. Perhaps you could travel different galaxies, gathering parts and jobs to tweak your custom ship and explore different worlds.

Ooh, now I want to make this game. Would you mind terribly if I used the idea?

blueman 2017-08-01 22:24

@iamsodarncool

I wouldn't mind at all, nobody owns an idea. We could use more space exploration games anyways :slight_smile:

iamsodarncool 2017-08-01 22:41

@Blueman

Neato, I'll let you know if I finish it :)

Thanks for being part of the stream :)

This is awesome! It definitely has a case of programmer art, but the game plays fantastically! I kinda wish there was a long mode or even an unlimited mode, but either way it entertained me and my friend for a good chunk of time. Good job!

huvaakoodia 2017-08-18 13:35

Using an impulse engine instead of a basic thruster is an interesting twist. Didn't see too may reasons to upgrade the impulse force too much though as that makes it way too easy to collide into asteroids in close quarters.

I did not realize there was a timer at all. It just slammed a *Game Over* screen on my face. I accidentally dismissed it immediately with 'J' so I didn't even get to read it... Oh well, I hope I did well. There should have been some sort of an alert there, similar to the power warning text for instance.

The graphics are fine, audio a bit basic to be honest.

Solid work, not a lot to complain.

jondalnas 2017-08-18 16:38

Nice game! The balancing was a little off, but the short gameplay made up for it. There wasn't really a reason to explore, since all the resources you needed were the beginning of the game.

gamechoy 2017-08-19 01:38

Very polished and focused. Such a simple concept, but yet so addicting. The sound effects on this are perfect, and make the experience of collecting so much more satisfying. I was very impressed with how fluid everything was. Would love to see a post-jam version of this, with some updated graphics and even better physics. You have a great start here!

galaxstudios 2017-08-22 07:55

Great work and well rounded. Keep it up!

I didn't realize it was timed till the game ended. Although I am horrible at asteroid games, I enjoyed this one a lot, because asteroids don't kill me. The game mechanics are really well done, it forces you to think before upgrading since after some time you will need to go further where there are more ore density remaining. While I'm not a fan of the art-style, it didn't hinder the whole experience. On the other side, the music and sound effects were great. Overall, I really had a lot of fun with this game.
