Just played a puppy game , and here comes a cat game...

It is really fun to play as a cat hiding against master. The cats modeling, the animation, the voice acting is really cool! Also, it is really nice making a game reflecting the real life.

rayriver 2017-04-25 06:27

"Cat Slave Forever"...lol

king-kujito 2017-04-28 16:31

That's a very cute cat. The cat is enough to win me over! Great cat -> great game ;-)

wizcas 2017-04-28 16:53

Thanks for the comment, @king-kujito! Ms. Doggie will be so pleased hearing your admiration :joy:

philomory 2017-04-28 18:38

This is really cute! Unfortunately, at least in the WebGL version, I had a really hard time getting the cat to hide in the hiding places, so I always got caught. I'll try the download version later.

kipelovets 2017-04-28 21:56

This is super cute! I was able to rule the world because stupid human was stuck under his desk though;)

wizcas 2017-04-29 09:48

@philomory I guess it's because the WebGL version's view is too small and the way of camera control is not quite suitable for this kind of gameplay...I'm planning to optimize the experience later! anyway, please do try the download version :)

wizcas 2017-04-29 09:49

@kipelovets :joy: and it's the best proof that I AM a stupid human

jackyjjc 2017-05-01 05:07

Yay I finished the game! Now I rules the world :p I love the graphics, very nice and cute. The room is interestingly designed where there are levels and not just flat ground. The hide outs are a bit tricky to get in, at first i thought i needed to click the light spots on the ground, turns out i actually need to click the hide out spot (the side of the bed etc.) I think the indication should be made clearer. Also the hideout at the end of the bed wasn't working for me (I was playing the WebGL version). Overall, nice game! I had fun with it! (otherwise I wouldn't finish it)

philomory 2017-05-01 07:43

So, in the download version, I managed to glitch it out by 'roaring' while in a hideout (at least, I think that's what caused it), after which, a) I could no longer roar, and b) the human only ever rotated in place with a yellow light no matter what I did. He was always watching directly at me, but never did anything, so I could carry things right past him. I'll also echo what @jackyjjc said, it took me forever to realize you don't click the orange areas to hide.

Anyway, all that aside, it's pretty obvious this is a first-time entry, but at the same time, it's _waaaaay_ better than _my_ first entry, so, congratulations! You made something cute, and playable, and complete!

wizcas 2017-05-01 10:55

@jackyjjc @philomory Thanks guys for finishing my game and the advices. I'm greatly encouraged! I really had no time for optimizing the indicators while I did realized that the hints for hideouts are not obvious enough. But what I never thought of is that players expect the light on ground as entrances ;) And sorry for the bugs, too.

I'm now fine-tuning my game, including solving bugs, remaking the navmesh navigation, re-design levels and gameplay mechanisms. Hope I can launch my game someday!

fangzhangmnm 2017-05-01 12:04

Thanks for your hardworking programming there is a complex and complete gameplay. The greatest thing of your game is the quick and light movement of cat. The pace of jumping and accumulating is just fine.

To improve:

- No music. Also you could strength your game's feedback by more sound effects. - The cat looks like a big worm. The key of pixel art is neat. You may make a cubic cat like characters in minecraft and the graphic will looks better. Donnot need to implement every geometry detail of the cat, instead get some abstract feature. Though, I think it is to be couraged of your art since you are a programmer. - So yourself can jump onto the bed like your cat?! - I've read your blog. I think it is wiser to leave more time for gameplay, levels, contents and finetuning since we are making a * game *, not a technical program or artwork or anything. Gameplay is the most important thing.

wizcas 2017-05-01 12:23

@fangzhangmnm Thanks dude, very wise and helpful advices  Yes I do realize that the cat may be too detailed formed, which makes it not quite good-looking. Actually, I'm planning to redo all the models in low-poly style. Hope I works.

My schedule was not well planned, which made me struggle with sorts of shit works rather than gameplay. I guess I'll do better next time :)

And yes, I do jump onto my bed sometimes just for catching my cat in real life:rofl:

marc-grabow 2017-05-01 13:51

He, thanks for playing Marbleverse (that's how I got here), nice game you got there! Might need some polish (not the language) as most compo/jam games do but for one guy in 48h from scratch this is very impressive!

I love the cat movement and the very accurate modeling of your face (as I imagine you look like that in real life) :)

But I still couldn't figure out what to do/how to win (I certainly figured out how to lose). I know I can collect stuff and that I can hide but I couldn't find a spot where I should bring all my treasures? Probably I am just stupid.

Great game!

fernandoadolfo 2017-05-01 14:04

Really nice and funny game. A stealth cat is always a good idea. Visually is really cool. The only problem that I found is some hideouts are impossible to use. I would like this game was longer but anyway is a really good game.

pixzleone 2017-05-01 14:05

Cute game! The graphics are pretty nice, but it could use some more sound and music. I love the stretch effect on the cat when you move around. I also noticed the bug where you can't "roar" anymore, and the guy just stands still.

Over all well done, keep it up!

t-mw 2017-05-01 14:07

I enjoyed it! I don't know if this was intentional, but it reminded of the Commandos series, with the FOV cones and hiding places (obviously the theme is completely different..). If you continued working on the game, it might be interesting to have team members with different (feline) skills, and levels that can be completed in different ways. That would be bigger than a 48h game though, and the mechanic you've got is nice.

The graphics were very cool, especially that jumping animation, but I would've liked to have seen the person in the voxel style as well.

Nice work!

lugdumdare-team 2017-05-01 14:18

Well executed, with effective path finding and great graphics. I wish for some audio to improve immersion ("God damnit! You f#@&* cat! Stop playing with it!). I hink it could be a good possibility to be able to hide under desk/bed/etc. Anyway, good job ;)

neontropics 2017-05-01 14:39

The movement of the cat is really good, I like the jumps and animation a lot! Core gameplay is fun - a 'bigger world' might make the sneaking a bit more intuitive though, it would be really cool to add a living room next to the bedroom or something.

Some more sound effects and some music would do wonders as well! The human seems to glitch out a bit every now and then and just kinda stand there watching you without going after you.

wizcas 2017-05-01 14:52

@marc-grabow Sorry for the lack of hint in the scene. The cat's 'treasure' is under the white table to the left of the bed. And to @fernandoadolfo, you have to move your mouse over the hideout (which is beside the lights on the ground, i.e. the hollow under the bed/sofa, the surface on the box, etc.), and click on the half-transparent effect. I intended to make them more obvious but was running out of time. :worried:

@pixzleone @lugdumdare-team Yes it definitely feels bad without any sound except the 'meow' by myself. :disappointed: I poorly planned my time and didn't realize I didn't have enought music and sound effects until it was near the deadline. Sure I'll make sure having them next time!

And finally to @t-mw, you got it absolutely right! I'm a big fan of the *Commandos* series, as well as *Desperados* series and *Shadow Tactics* which was released last year. With a similar gameplay mechanism, I tried to differentiate my game with different concept of level designs and character abilities, just as you pointed out. Though I'm not sure if I'm gonna make any teammate, since stories happen in such small scenes. With your encourangement as well as others, I'm actually planning to make this game complete in the next few months. Maybe publish it on Steam. Who knows?

Oh. And I did mean to make the 'stupid human' in voxels as well. Only I didn't have enough time. Sorry :disappointed:

xavier-indie-gamedev 2017-05-01 15:23

I love the cute graphics and the super funny concept (I lol'd at the intro), and that one bit of audio (the 'roar' lol). The game itself was a bit hard to play (at least initially) - I felt like I didn't really have control over the cat, and some areas were hard to click on (like the hideout) or access (like the top shelf - you could only jump up to it from the left side). Also it seemed a bit random whether you would be spotted or not (sometimes I'm directly in front of him / or bump right into him but nothing happens). But I was quite impressed with the animations (I guess this is why click controls were needed), and I did eventually get used to the controls and gameplay.

Overall, really good effort, especially since you did it all by yourself and it was your first game jam!

Btw don't forget to go back and rate my game!

koreus7 2017-05-01 15:25

Great game! I love these sort of stealth games and clever use of the theme too. (Also I am a fan of voxels and you nailed the voxel animations)

I enjoyed getting the hang of it and It makes me think of my cat who also likes to hoard things

If I had to make one criticism it would be that there could have been more sounds, especially purring :cat: !

devastus 2017-05-01 18:22

It was actually a pretty fun mini-game, and I have a cat that looks just like her so you're automatically getting an unfair advantage point there :P

A little bit of twitchy behaviour in the pathfinding at some points but mainly I was able to play the game without any problems. At first I didn't really know where to bring the "treasure" or how to hide, but I quickly understood the second run. It was nice that you went your way to make a jump animation to ascending, that was a nice touch.

With sound this would definitely be even better. A very nice first time entry, good work!

junjunlowpoly 2017-05-01 18:25

Nice voxel models and cute setting!

loktor 2017-05-01 20:29

Wow really great job with the voxel graphics they look really nice :) i also like the idea of a stealth puzzle game as a cat :D

One thing that could be improved tho would be the way you go into a hideout, i really had a hard time to position the mouse correctly in a stressful situation. Also for some reason i didn't manage to go into the hideout at the foot of the bed

Overall a really great entry, you can be proud (I especially like your art direction) :)

wizcas 2017-05-02 03:43

Thanks all for your feedbacks! You guys just give me confidence for making this a full game in next few months

@xavier-indie-gamedev the sight detection is always the most difficult part in my project. I tried a few methods and this is the best I can get in 48 hours :disappointed: The first thing I'm gonna do next is to fine-tune the FOV cone and sight mechanism. Already have a few thoughts in my mind. Hopefully I can get it right  And the pathfinding problem, about the only available way onto the closet is from the dresser, is actually a intentional design. My cat can't jump that high...But I guess there need to be some kind of hints since it makes you confused.

@koreus7 PURRING! DEFINITELY! A that warms my heart...

@devastus LOL that's what I was kinda expecting, the unfair advantage. Haha. I mean, who can say no to these soft, warm, little angels? Sorry I didn't make the game clear enough.. I planned to make a tutorial instead of a simple, cheap-looking, horrible instruction page. But you know..time ran out :disappointed:

@junjunlowpoly I love your avatar in Weibo. Please do upload it

@loktor I noticed the problem of the difficulty in clicking hideout...Actually I'm not sure whether to change the way of camera movement, or just make the hideout bigger for easy click. What do u think? Alternatively, I can make an icon or something right beside/above a hideout, making the hideouts obvious and easy-to-interact, but I think that'll make the screen a mess...Hard decisions

askania-m 2017-05-02 17:42

Hi! I played and gathered all the stuff in the room, the kitty was very cute :) However, I didn't get it when the game was completed. How many treasures are there actually? Cool graphics and idea, thank you for it! Check up our hand drawn adventure here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/stardust

simonhutchinson 2017-05-03 00:45

Wow. This is really great. A relatively simple (but original) idea, but the gameplay FEELS really nice, making it really fun to play (supported by the graphics of course).

gao-ming 2017-05-03 01:05

wizcas 2017-05-03 01:08

@askania-m Hi, Thanks for playing! There are actually 7 treasures to collect, I should've provided a progress bar or something...

wizcas 2017-05-03 04:15

tobia88 2017-05-03 14:53

Cool voxel modelling. But since the voxel density of cat is clearly another level from the comparison with other objects, so i felt the unity of graphic is slightly lacking.

The animation of cat is definitely adorable! i'm always enjoying of clicking somewhere to move the cat, especially controlling cat to jump! If there's sound with interaction should bring the better gameplay experience.

I love cat meow too! But the thing is, the level design is lacking some elements due to the cat meow, i pass the whole level even without using it! I think if cat can jump to the computer desk from the top of wall should be nice, since i can attract the guy then jump back to the other side and collect the stuff or send it to treasury.

Anyway, a nice try within 48 hours, i quiet love it though

kevtukk 2017-05-04 13:39

I like cats, I like this game. The voxel modelling is really cool. The "meow" is really cool. I like the stealth gameplay.

Just one thing: It's not always clear which way the cat will take when you click on one point. Most of the time it's ok but sometimes you get a bad surprise.

But still a fun and cute game.

loktor 2017-05-04 21:09

@Wizcas for the problem regarding how to vizualize it, maybe adding a highlight color e.q. if i move over it with the mouse, that the border of the area where i can click becomes white or some other color? :)

tommyflower 2017-05-08 11:52

Wow!Really loved the concept! I loved the complexity of the environment, the character design and how the cat moves (so cute!), the feedbacks are very clear, too bad you have no music, but go on with this, I'd love to see more!

la-mecanique-du-plastique 2017-05-09 10:54

Funny game ! We liked the way it jumps. Too bad that it is instant gameover if you're catched. It may be less harsh if it just reseted the current item. good job !

szczebel1995 2017-05-10 10:40

The game is really well made, it's fun to play and the concept is pretty original :) I had a lot of fun playing it and I hope you will polish the game with cat-owner model and add maybe extra stuff because the game is really good!

zwrawr 2017-05-12 15:26

Enjoyable - controls need work, perhaps hold down mouse button to move as well as WASD alternative? Also encountered a bug of the "human" being stuck on the corner and orange search light. Animation of the cat is very impressive. Interacting with the environment is difficult (increase clickboxes and more obvious tooltips?)

dgspitzer 2017-05-15 15:53

wizcas 2017-05-17 01:25

@zwrawr Thanks for the advice! As you said the controls is a major problem of the game experience. I inherited the 'click to move' way from Commandos series, though it doesn't seem to fit the way of camera control well. The WASD maybe an acceptable alternative. I'll dig in a little bit and find out how it works

wizcas 2017-05-17 01:30

xxdoombox 2017-05-19 20:00

hey really great concept! i loved the idea, and the gameplay was actually really fun, which is quite a large thing for a ludum dare game! the room was designed well and the art was very pleasing. unfortunately, the hideouts simply do not work. this is rather unfortunate, because otherwise the game is great! i would love to see this game expanded and the bugs fixed. you should continue to work on this post-jam. good job friend!
