Funny effects, but what is the aim of the game ? Is there an amount of gold to reach ?

cacciatc 2012-04-22 18:28

I like the gentle clockwise orbit.

m4c0 2012-04-22 20:03

+1 for the orbit! But it really needs some "goal"...

You need to break even to move to the next planet, with mining becoming more and more costly at each stage. I didn't have time to go much further than this unfortunately but thanks for trying it out and commenting.

Is there a strategy to it? I couldn't really figure it out, but sometimes whole chunks of the planet would suddenly disappear.

pom 2012-04-24 01:27

The idea was that you have to find a balance between mining safely, which could be costly, and causing collapses where large chunks would disappear to reach the center where the ore is denser more quickly, at the cost of losing some of the ore freed during the collapse. But I could not finish tuning that part so there is not much of a strategy at the moment. Thanks for playing anyway!

interesting concept but no real game behind it, it locks up also if you hold the mining button down for too long and it tries too much at once.

The tech seems to be solid enough. I think the game would need a bit stronger gameplay to be actually fun. Now it is more a nice technical demo :)

Pretty cool digging effect but lacking in the gameplay department.

armornick 2012-05-01 06:21

How it was made is amazing. It really shows what you can do with just a web browser. The gameplay is a bit lacking and I couldn't see the theme in it, but it's definitely well-made.

Pros:
- unique gameplay
- graphics are ok
- destroying of planets

Cons:
- lack of different planets
- no real challenge
- ore sometimes floats in the air
- very easy
- no sound and laggy (Firefox?)

fireblend 2012-05-01 16:41

Fun to play with, but I would call it more a toy than a game. Great job with making destroying planets so satisfactory though!

cosmologicon 2012-05-01 22:06

I like the physics of the planet breaking apart. I would have liked it to be clearer which ore I was actually getting and which I wasn't, and why that was.

Thanks for all your comments!

* Firefox has some serious performance issues with SVG unfortunately. I also included a stupid Easter egg that I think does not help with performance :)

* I didn't have time for sound, as I wanted to have no external assets and generate the audio as well as the graphics and didn't have time to work on that. Also, there is no sound in space, right?

* Ore sometime floats in the air because there is a discrepancy between the way the planetoid is rendered with smooth edges and the way it is represented as a polygon. The SVG uDOM should be able to help but current implementations are lacking so that's something I didn't have time to fix either. Let's just say this ore has some strange gravitational properties, and call it a feature.

* You get the ore that was directly inside the mining cone, so that when the planet collapses the ore set free outside your cone is lost. You can see the money brought by the ore that you get but I agree that it's not very visible. The idea that I wanted to implement for the gameplay was that you had to balance between mining safely, which could end up not being cost effective in the long run, and blasting through the planet to get to the core at the risk of losing a lot of ore.

xillix 2012-05-02 02:52

I like the idea, but it needs more to it.

pom 2012-05-02 06:31

I agree on both points!

pierrec 2012-05-04 07:55

There is a pretty good game hidden somewhere! You should work on it. Mining planets is fun

pom 2012-05-09 07:30

Thanks, I _am_ planning on developing this further in the near future.

jimmypaulin 2012-05-09 20:05

I like the concept and think it has loads of scope to be made into a fuller experience. Nice planet deformation effects and particles. Would enjoy sound and perhaps more gradual destruction of the planet - one moment i was just impacting the surface and the next half the thing had blown up, so it wasn't quite the feedback I was expecting, satisfying though it was! Loads of scope to jazz it up with graphical effects etc, not bad at all
