| Apr 23 08:19:33 | Defender of the Road | ♥ 1 | Hi Val! I just had a good play with your game and for a first LD I actually found it weirdly enjoyable. I loved building up a little empire of turrets and seeing projectiles fly everywhere. So in the fun category you definitely succeeded in. The Visuals were nice but could be improved. Looks like you focused quite a bit on the car model. Yes, it looks nice, but as a result it looks out of place with all the other more 'hand-drawn' sprites. The sound effects were pleasent and not overdone though the loop got slightly repetitive after a while. There are some more glaring issues I found though. Controls are a bit odd to say the least. Having to reach over to T and U everytime was slightly irritating and could've been improved (Personally I prefer Q and E). Also, the game doesn't pause or stop after you win so my ears got subjected to around 20 seconds of torture everytime I finished. Also no way to restart from what I can tell. Otherwise, a nice little game for the compo. Some more variety in the towers and enemies would've been nice. Good Job :) Oh yeah, my highest score was: 6490 | |
| Apr 23 08:38:49 | 19m 16s | A Nightmare on the Canned Goods Aisle | ♥ 3 | Hi Tudvari! You have a nice little game here, however it suffers from some small issues. First, I found the general gameplay to be interesting yet underdeveloped. The minimap was nice but since it doesn't rotate with the player it got kind of confusing to navigate it. The idea that lights slowly go out in the store was nice but so much more could have been done with it. To be perfectly honest I found the (I'm going to assume) placeholder people to be absolutely adorable, especially when I saw one endlessly spin in one of the aisles. The game has a very nice asthaetic and all the art blends really nicely. I also loved how calmly the store manager was talking throughout the game "Yeah, you know a guy just got kill- RESTOCK THESE SHELVES MIKE, NOW!!" brilliant! Biggest problem however was that, well, I barely knew what I was doing most of the time. I kept losing money for some reason. I had no idea why coupons were useful and the "His Distance" thing felt, random? Seemed to me like there wasn't even a murderer in the mall. Otherwise, with some tweaks you actually have a really nice little game here. I enjoyed it for it's atmosphere too (The audio was really nicely placed). All in all, a good base for a solid game. EDIT: @aterlamia also made me remember that this game needs to have some sort of a cursor so I know what I'm clicking at. |
| Apr 23 09:02:55 | 24m 06s | Dog Jam | ♥ 1 | Hi Teapoly! Just finished your game and I must say you came up with a really novel concept here. I had another one of those "How did I not think of that" moments. Gamedev + Cards x Ludum Dare = brilliant! The gameplay was nice. There seemed to be a huge variety of cards so a bunch of content which is nice. I loved the little doggy, artwork was extremely well done. The audio while strangely terrifying and ominous was nice, and I weirdly enjoyed it after a while. However, I do have some slight issues too. I think around the midway point, it felt repetitive. I kind of struggled with understanding some of the cards and why sometimes I would get a lot of points and other times nearly none. There were too many variables in the mix. You could have had one mood bar instead of 3 different variables for example. So all in all. You have a great game here. Game dev is one of my favorite genres and you added a really nice twist to it. Finding out how well I did at the end kept me playing. Good Job :) |
| Apr 23 09:42:36 | 39m 41s | Rhythm Escape | ♥ 0 | Wow! Out of all the games I've played so far, this by FAR is the most innovative and fits the theme best. Stealth and Music? Awesome! The game was great fun, very addicting and a perfect challenge. While the AI could at least follow you for a little bit (seemed like they had pre-determined paths) it still felt pretty tense when one was near me, making me error prone. At first I didn't really understand the controls (I thought you had to follow the beat of the music and the guitar thing on the right was just cosmetic. But once I figured it out, I beat the game on the first try, just as a quick statistic for you. The Art was nice. This is one of those games where programmer art looks pretty decent. The audio loop was nice and made sense for this type of a game. Otherwise, you have a great concept here. I mean, I found it difficult trying to come up with criticism concerning Gameplay to be honest. At this point you can just keep adding more levels and content and then you would have a real gem I feel. Really well done! |
| Apr 23 10:01:44 | 19m 08s | Flappy Bird + Tetirs = FLAPTRIS | ♥ 1 | Hi Mazzletov! You have a good concept for your game here. Just some minor tweaks and it could be a nice little time-waster (not negatively of course). The overall feel of the game was awesome. I sometimes cringe when I play other people's games and their movement is a bit rough, however those retries with the Rigibody really paid off. The game feels truly great. The whole idea of combining Flappy Bird (which is a genre of it's own by this point to be honest) with Tetris was not only good conceptually but greatly executed. The audio was nice (the snapping sound was especially satisying) but forgetful to be perfectly honest, yet added a nice bit of atmosphere. The visuals are great, while some of the colours used on the Tetris blocks could be changed (the Green doesn't really work well with Pink, Purple and Blue) it was still a pleasing game. Ok, however my biggest gripe were the controls. When I realised that you had to click the capsules, eh, the game got frustrating. I like games that can be played independantly from the keyboard as it allows me to map half the keyboard to one hand. Having to use the mouse with R and Space ruined my hand to eye co ordination, especially in a somewhat fast paced game like this. Pacing was also pretty insane. It doesn't seem like a game where you can go crazy, which is kind of necessary for these types of games (Imagine you didn't have those epic moments of skill in Tetris), being able to complete vertical lines would have been a good way of doing this. Otherwise (before I fill up the whole page) it's a nice game, that requires some tweaking. I also encountered that game breaking bug (I assume?) I rotated a block into the wall and BLAM game died :(. Otherwise good job for the compo :) |
| Apr 23 10:23:38 | 21m 54s | Tiny Crusader | ♥ 1 | Hello nilstastic! Just had a nice little play of your game and with some further development, it can really become a nice little game. I remember playing Lemmings years ago, one of my earliest video gaming memories, your game didn't exactly give me flashbacks but is a nice take on the formula. The fact that you made procedurally generated levels is quite impressive, never bugged on me either, so good job. The visuals were great. Seems like Pico-8 just keeps making awesome looking games. I love the sound effects, they're a nice substitute for no background music (which I feel isn't even necessary for this kind of game). Sweet particles too. I just found it a bit... easy? To me it felt like digging down most of the time. Not knowing whether sending them down to the abyss was the right thing to do also worried me (some explanation of what your goal was would have been nice). There just wasn't enough variety or challenge and unfortunately I had to quit at one point because it didn't feel like anything was happening. You have a nice game here. Good concept, good visuals, good sound. You just need to flesh the gameplay out a bit more (soldier types?), (special levels?), just more content to keep me interested. Good Job otherwise! |
| Apr 23 10:44:41 | 21m 03s | STEREOtype | ♥ 1 | Hi caronosphere! This is a great minimalist game. A great twist on the typing genre. The game had a perfect balance of difficulty, your game was made in a way that losing didn't feel unfair and thus you want to come back to play the game. The game feels very smooth and seamless, little details such as the rotating letters added a nice visual touch. The game looked very professional, it would be hard to convince someone that this is for a 48 hour solo compo just by having them play the game. I would have liked it, however if the game felt a bit more alive, for example, UI elements that dance to the beat. The variety of beats was nice too. All in all, this is by far the most 'complete' game I've played. Everything feels finished. A really nice refresher for a genre littered by poor games. |
| Apr 23 12:05:06 | 1h 20m | Cropper | ♥ 1 | Hi thomz12! This is a pretty solid idle game for the compo. It follows many of the same traits that these types of games have, "Capitalism", "Expansion" and then a theme, in this case Farming. As it is, I found it enjoyable for the same reasons as I enjoy any other idle game. Slowly building up your fortunes and seeing you cash meter skyrocket. The visuals are nice, the pixel art was pretty well done. I liked the little pop sound effect when harvesting crops. Otherwise, the biggest issue for me is the concept. I mentioned that I enjoyed this game for all the reasons that I enjoy similar games. Not because this game brings anything new to the table. For this game to stand out it needs some sort of stand out feature, otherwise it's going to get drowned in the pool of other idle games. But it's still a pleasant game to play that just needs some more content to make it stand out. Good Job! |
| Apr 23 12:42:13 | 37m 07s | Punch Rock Scissors | ♥ 1 | Great concept and great execution. I found the game fun from the beginning till the end. The pacing was on point and I didn't feel overwhelmed with challenge. The game is also really nicely presented, clean UI and nice background with good animations. If I had to give tips for improvement, I would say, maybe add a larger variety of animations, for example a finishing move on the last strike. Adding some game modes to keep the player, playing for longer would also be a welcome addition. Otherwise a great game with a great concept. Good Job :) |
| Apr 23 12:49:59 | 7m 46s | Soccer Battle Royale | ♥ 1 | Wow, what a great silly concept! I was following your blog posts expecting something pretty ok but this is just stupid fun. It's a bit rough with some of the animations and AI but it's a very entertaining little time waster. Just some tweaking needed to make it even better. Also, the web version does indeed lag quite a bit, which seems to be a common problem. |
| Apr 24 13:33:21 | 24h 43m | Run N' Cook | ♥ 1 | +The potato gun was fun to use. Could have used some sound though. +It's an interesting concept, having to go out and scavenge your ingredients instead of being given them. +The music loop was pretty alright. ========= -I genuinely had no idea what I was doing. Didn't know what the purpose of the fields or cows were and kind of just ran aimlessly. -Enemies have a pre-defined spawn. You could've given it some slight variations. Enemies also spawn inside the camera. (hint: Use Random.Range and the Camera's Viewport) -The game lacked an inventory. I feel like you didn't have enough time to truly flesh out the game. This can actually end up being something quite unique. I say, keep working on it, you have something here. |
| Apr 24 13:48:05 | 14m 44s | 91' Evolution Football | ♥ 1 | Still needs some polishing. The controls like most other people said are a bit rough around the edges. I liked the art and the music was pretty fitting (though not my thing). I found it nearly impossible to actually lock on the ball and do some actual dribbling. A passing and shooting sound would've given the game a nice juice that I feel is missing. With some work this can become a pretty fun sports game. It's just a bit rough. |
| Apr 25 08:04:35 | 18h 16m | The Adventures of Cake Man | ♥ 1 | Interesting concept. I agree with @Evan Minto that there should be some sort of a recipe book. I liked the music quite a bit (even though it seemed a tad bit too loud). Otherwise I feel like the game has a few technical problems. First, your character gets stuck on walls (I recommend you learn a bit on physics materials in Unity). I also had a bug where suddenly I couldn't pick up any recipes anymore (It played the sound and everything but it didn't add to my inventory or even delete). Otherwise, it's a decent concept that needs some more work behind it. That is if you are willing to keep working on it, of course. |
| Apr 25 08:16:03 | 11m 28s | HappyBlock | ♥ 1 | Cute little game. Has a really nice concept and well executed. The jumping was a bit off but luckily it doesn't affect you in game (thanks). Music would have obviously been nice but otherwise a nice game. Good Job :) |
| Apr 25 13:07:40 | 4h 51m | Greenspawn Restaurant | ♥ 1 | I think I've played around 3 or so games on cooking, this is by far the best take on it. Lots of fun. Good challenge, fitting visuals, good execution. Only needs some music. Also the lemonade text is difficult to read because of the colour. Also spam shooting clicked me out of the window, which was irritating to say the least. Good Job! |
| Apr 25 16:20:28 | 3h 12m | Platform Of Love | ♥ 1 | Adorable little game. Not sure how I feel about the game asking me whether the game was good or bad as a toll :p |
| Apr 26 09:37:01 | 17h 16m | Baseball Nightmare | ♥ 1 | Interesting concept. I found that sometimes aiming with the mouse felt a bit 'off' there wasn't a lot of feedback telling me when I hit an enemy, some sort of trail would help with making the ball easier to see. I liked the visuals and audio, all fit quite nicely together, good UI too. The pacing needs to be improved, one second there's 1 or 2 guys and the next there are 20 or 30. The game gets too difficult too quickly and suffers from "This game get's impossible to win at this point" syndrome. As @Aditya Shukla mentioned, some power-ups would have helped in keeping the game interesting. Otherwise, a good looking game that needs some more polish in the game play aspect to make it something truly special. |
