LD35 — Shapeshift

Another Dimension by pikmin4000 2016-05-09T21:34:00

Good game! I got stuck, but I don't actually think it's too hard; I'm just bad at these sort of games. I do think transformations shouldn't be the up and down keys: in general, it's a good idea to relegate "actions" to other buttons (usually z or x), since the transformations don't directly cause movement. Changing to the triangle to make a big bounce, then back to the circle to maintain height is a great feeling though!

Box Connector by Thepattybeast 2016-04-18T20:00:00

Can you explain a bit more how to play the game? Every time I play I make one move (putting a square and getting rid of a square by clicking), but then after that one move I can't do anything! I'd like to play the game and give a rating but I don't get it :cc

Data Break by AsixJin 2016-04-23T23:36:00

As keyboardmonkey says, the lack of ball control stings, but the "make it go back up" power and on-the-fly ball-switching is a good idea! I'm not sure what the point is of the score decreasing... maybe it would be really interesting to make this a "survival" game, where it's not really about not dying but about not letting the score hit zero? Just a thought! Though it wasn't too exciting, I enjoyed the aesthetics, and it was well-programmed as far as I could tell! Good job :)

Sunshift by guimonpa 2016-04-19T20:51:00

Ahhhhhh this game is freakin good! The concept is solid, if simple, and the mechanics are fun. But what REALLY impressed me was the aesthetic, especially way each level takes place in a small frame and the frame moves around! The first time the frame moved during a level I was like WOOOOOAHHHHHHHHH. REALLY REALLY cool idea.

If I had one criticism it would be this: having up be jump really is never the right idea, in my opinion. It feels weird using the same fingers for movement and an action like jumping. I bet the game would be easier for most people if jumping was spacebar or z or something? Maybe it's configurable, in which case good! But I think it shouldn't be the default either.

But that's really pretty minor and I like the game a lot :)

Maze Runner by varuns 2016-04-18T19:51:00

How come you don't have a rating for humor? I'm not sure if it was supposed to be funny, but I laughed a lot at the end, when I went through the exit and there was glass everywhere! I accidentally broke some by backing away from another wall :p also breaking glass in general is a fun thing to do, and the sound effects were good. I can tell you weren't really able to do much with the game in the short amount of time you had for the jam, but it's a good concept and you should keep working on it! And definitely do the next jam as well :)

Land of Curves by spiffl 2016-04-18T22:42:00

Do y'all really think it's super hard? I'm pretty good at shmups so I guess I don't have a good perspective. The deadline isn't for two more hours so I could maybe make it a little easier...

Land of Curves by spiffl 2016-04-26T01:12:00

I actually haven't heard of it! Thanks for the tip and the detailed feedback :)

Purity by Sean 2016-04-19T21:18:00

WOW. This is probably the best jam game I've seen yet! The mechanics are fun and easy to understand, but those GRAPHICS AND MUSIC are INCREDIBLE. I looooooooooove the aesthetic and how things change as you get injured. In this game, injury isn't just a health meter going down, but it actually matters in a way that makes you almost wince and say "ouch" whenever you take damage. Very, very well done :)

Tangram Escape by jhell 2016-05-09T21:27:00

There are a lot of issues with how this idea was presented and executed, most of which have already been mentioned by others, but overall this is a REALLY COOL game and you should keep working on it! I adored the graphics and music and voice acting!

Geomatrix by remiv 2016-04-19T20:29:00

WOW THIS IS GOOD!!! great concept and very well executed. if i had a criticism, it might be that in my opinion the most interesting form (the square) is introduced in the first level! on one hand that makes the game immediately interesting, but on the other hand it means all the future transformations are underwhelming. regardless, great job!

By The Light Of The Spire by Blobo 2016-04-18T20:40:00

Cute! I really like the graphics and music and little details, like when the stone wizard fell over! The controls and general feel need a lot of work, but this is a great start! If I have one big criticism to make, it would be that not *every* jump needs to be just-barely-possible-with-good-timing, y'know? There should be some jumps that require great timing, but others (not just at the beginning) that aren't such a big deal. Regardless, well done :)

ShmupShifter by TerraCottaFrog 2016-05-09T22:01:00

I really enjoyed this game! I'm a big shmup nut, and it was well-designed and the graphics and music are rad! I do have a few minor criticisms though:

1. The elongated bullets that many enemies (particularly the first boss) shoot look incredibly cool, but I think they might be a bad idea from a design perspective. They're not large, but they can easily form nearly-impenetrable walls and are much more dangerous than even a whole bunch of normal circular bullets. You should use them more sparingly, I think.

2. The enemy types and flight patterns are a bit dull. GameMaker's path feature is super easy to use, so there's no reason the enemies shouldn't be moving in more complex formations! And you dont' need to hold off until the end for that cool stuff, either; even from the first level I was a bit put off by the fact that enemies always just flew in a straight-ish line.

3. There's not enough incentive to use the sideways gun. I would suggest copying the excellent Radiant Silvergun, in which the sideways bullet does much more damage than the other guns to counteract its difficulty of use!

Despite these nitpicks, I think you've done a great job with this game, and I'll probably play the updated non-submission version in just a bit! Congratulations :)

Starliege by Kudanaman 2016-04-19T21:46:00

I like this. The graphics are nice, and I like how you don't actually have to memorize the entire sequence, just remember a few ahead of where you are currently and find the right pace. The FIRST time I played, pressing esc after losing didn't restart it properly (and yes I clicked in the window), but the second time it DID, except there was only one wave of enemies followed by nothing. I had fun though :)

Neon Level Switcher by theck 2016-04-19T21:32:00

Solid game. I like the idea, and the graphics and music are nice, and the controls feel good! My main issue is, as others have said, the difficulty curve. It feels like the first 50% of the game is way too easy, where I just find a safe place and then do nothing for 5 seconds, and then it QUICKLY becomes far too difficult. Smoothing it out a bit (start a bit tougher but don't escalate as quickly) would be a good idea, or having a level-based system like Skruffye said. Another fun idea would be if you could see TWO layers into the background so you know what's coming up next and can plan ahead!

Issues aside, I had fun playing this; good job :)

Polymorph by cameronpenner 2016-04-18T20:24:00

I LOVE THIS GAME
the concept is SO solid. i love the way the different pieces move, especially the teleporting square! and the way it teleports just by holding a direction and releasing instead of having to push a button or something is very smart! and of course the music and narrator are a great addition.

i do have one big criticism, though: it's wayyyyyyyyy too easy. i didn't actually *lose* the game, I just stopped playing at some point to come write this review. However, the fact that I was enjoying the movement and mechanics so much despite the lack of difficulty really says something! great job :)

Hasardeux by Llucile 2016-04-24T00:08:00

Solid!! Great idea and well-executed for such a short timespan. As others have said, the same-color-background idea is clever and very mean haha. Good job :)

Spaghetti Slayer by Cole and Jordan Studios 2016-04-24T00:01:00

What a cute game! I really enjoyed the music, though I guess you didn't make it since it's not a rating category. I also liked the weird camera movements (they kinda got in the way of seeing things for gameplay reasons, but the game wasn't very hard and it looked cool so it's okay), and the aesthetic in general is very funny. Great job on your first dare, fellas :)

The Maze Nightmare by docteurSid 2016-04-19T21:09:00

Great concept. I love the idea of a "horror" game with no enemies... just those walls closing in... and the vision circle shrinking... so creepy! However, like others have said, I got to a point where I 100% couldn't get a blue dot (and I know about the diagonal thing; it was completely boxed in). The graphics were really simple of course, but the tiles you used for the walls are actually very good and gross looking, and the music is rad. Good job :)

Jonathan Blow Presents: BLAMMO! It's Time To Finish What Lee Harvey Oswald Started by Acorn 2016-04-24T00:17:00

The best part of this game are the song and the description text, but I liked the rest of it, too! It was smart and bold of you to make the bad JFKs turn lizard only for a brief second, you really gotta keep an eye out! Good job

the game that wasn't finished ;-; by BerneyTD 2016-04-19T21:40:00

Aw, I wish you'd been able to complete more of this! It probably would have end up really nice. The graphics are cute, especially the wolf's idle animation, and I like the music a lot. Does being a wolf not do anything right now, or did I miss something?

Shapeshift by Klaas 2016-04-19T20:58:00

Fun!! It's a nice idea, and the slight momentum/weight in the player icon following the mouse feels good. If I had a criticism it would be that sometimes (or a lot of the time) the enemies are very close to the player right at the start of the game, so my first few plays I died nearly instantly before I understood what was happening. It would probably be better if the game started with an empty screen, but enemies entered the screen shortly after. Aside from that little issue I enjoyed the game a lot, good job :)

SCeLE-ton by narendra.arief 2016-05-09T21:45:00

Fun game! I loved your choice of music, and the graphics are nice. The gameplay is fun, but it has one big issue that gets in the way of me really enjoying myself: it's just too easy! I never died in the game, I just eventually got bored and quit. That's a bad sign! Every game gets boring eventually, but you need the game to be hard enough so I die *before* I get bored, haha. If you keep this in mind next time (it's especially important for "endless" type games) your next game will be a lot better. Good effort though, I enjoyed myself :)

Shape Shuffle by BitDare 2016-04-20T06:15:00

That was nice :)

Zedhus by GGAlliance 2016-04-23T23:50:00

COOL!!!! I love the voice effects and the starry background, and the game is fun! I couldn't quite beat it--it's super hard! But I got close and I like it a lot, good job!

@astrkl, hi, thanks for playing my game so quickly! i actually didn't realize this was published early, haha, it's not ready to play yet! it is a competitive game, and feel free to come back after the deadline when it's actually done, lol :)
